How to Identify and Fix a Blown Head Gasket

Symptoms of a Blown Gasket

What does a blown head gasket sound like? One of the first questions many people have when they hear a knocking or rattling from their engine is whether or not it’s a blown head gasket. While knocking may be a symptom of a blown head gasket, it’s typically not one of the first. Any of the following signs may mean you have a blown gasket:

  • Chronic overheating
  • Disappearing coolant
  • Bubbles in your radiator or coolant reservoir
  • Milky substance (water) in your oil or around your oil cap
  • White smoke from your exhaust
  • Fouled spark plugs or cylinder misfires

There are varied and multiple blown head gasket symptoms, because the head gasket has a lot of jobs. The head gasket sits between the engine block and the engine head. Coolant has to flow in and around the head and the block and it is kept in the coolant passage by the head gasket. Also, the head gasket is responsible for keeping the combustion gases in the combustion chamber and out of the coolant passages.  Head gasket failure can therefore result in a leaking of coolant outside the engine to the atmosphere, and leaving drips or puddles under your car, or leaking of coolant into the combustion chamber causing white smoke from the exhaust and a sweet smell.

Can You Test for a Blown Gasket?

There are a few simple blown gasket tests that you can run to ensure that you are identifying the right issue. Having multiple of the above symptoms at once is a good indication that you have a blown head gasket, but it’s best to make sure before you try replacing it. If you have an external leak with puddles and drips, you can check to see if the coolant is coming from in between the head and the block (just under the exhaust manifold). You may need a mechanics mirror, available at your local auto parts store, to be able to see the affected area.

If you have an internal leak with white smoke and a sweet smell, you can purchase a Combustion Leak Test Kit from your local parts store. The Combustion Leak Test Kit will test your coolant for the presence of exhaust gases, proving there is a breach between your combustion chamber and coolant passages.

Lastly, you can perform a cooling system pressure test to detect a leak, but the equipment for this test is expensive and it will only prove there is a leak, and not necessarily the location. If you think you may just have a leak, stop it in its tracks with BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer

Replacing Your Gasket

If you think you may have a blown head gasket that is beyond saving, check out our blog on fixinging a blown head gasket at home. Save yourself the hassle of finding a reputable mechanic and paying for labor costs by doing it yourself!

How Much Will Repair Cost?

What’s a car even worth with a blown head gasket? It’s not uncommon for this issue to total an inexpensive car. But if you decide to move forward with repairing your blown head gasket, you’re going to be looking at thousands of dollars in repairs (typically between one and two thousand dollars), making it one of the most expensive car repairs. Try using BlueDevil head gasket seal before you take the leap!

How to Fix a Blown Head Gasket Without Replacing it

If you’ve seen these blown head gasket symptoms in your vehicle you’ve got a few options.  Replacing the head gasket is one, but it’s expensive and will probably leave your vehicle in the shop for an extended period of time. A much simpler option is using BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer to seal the leak from the inside out. BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is a powerful sealing agent that will travel through your cooling system until it finds the leak in your head gasket and seals it shut! What is the guarantee that is given. My van has 160k. I’m trying to replace the motor but can’t find one under 80k miles. I have water in my oil and think I would like to try and use this product until I find a motor.

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 17, 2015 at 2:12 pm

      Jason-

For best results, you will want to change the engine oil before and after the BlueDevil process. The product does carry a 100% money back guarantee; if you have any questions you may contact us at 888-863-0426.

      Thanks!

In order to get the benefit of using the product, the engine would need to be able to start and idle for a full 50 minutes. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

            Thank you!

What if ur trick won’t hold the blue devil in it blowing water while trying to start

        • BlueDevil Pro on May 5, 2016 at 10:53 am

          Barry-

To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading. If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and you will usually notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull. Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

          Thank you!

        • BlueDevil Pro on May 10, 2016 at 9:19 am

          Brian-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Venter. Based on your description, unfortunately, it seems you are losing water/coolant a little too quickly for the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer to be effective. It doesn’t seem like you would be able to keep the product in the system long enough in order to get the benefit of using it. A hard part repair may be your best option.

          Hope this helps!

My car had water in it,it froze at night in the morning I started it cuz it was slushy in the overflow so I thought it would melt, hoes had a little slush so when I started it the belt popped check the oil was milky but not the day before so I want to know if I should use blue devil sealer and should I change my oil before pouring blue devil in or after and should I take out the thermostat first also?

      • Brian on October 2, 2017 at 12:53 pm

I have a question regarding the BD head gasket sealant (not the pour and go) after running for 50 minutes and letting cool I’m about to replace the thermostat. How much of the existing water and BD product do I drain off? Do I empty the system or remove a gallon and add straight unmixed antifreeze? Is it safe to leave the product in and add coolant to it?

        • BlueDevil Pro on October 2, 2017 at 1:36 pm

          Brian-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer only reacts to heat once. After the 50 minute idle and you shut the vehicle off, any extra BlueDevil in the system would be like extra water, it would not continue to react or continue to seal. It is safe to leave the product in the system, but you would not get any additional benefit by doing so. At this point, you would be fine to drain the system and refill it with your regular 50/50 mix.

          Thank you!

Yes, if you are getting water/coolant into the oil, you would want to change the oil before taking it for a test drive, to see if the product was able to seal. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

What if you don’t change the oil first and the car continues to over

        • BlueDevil Pro on October 1, 2018 at 9:28 am

          A lopez-

If you are getting water/coolant into the oil, we recommend changing the oil before and after the BlueDevil procedure. Whether you are using the product or not, it is never a good idea to run the vehicle with water in the oil. If the water makes its way into the engine bearings and deteriorates them, it would further damage the engine and make it necessary for an engine replacement. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 so that we may discuss your vehicle in more detail.

        • BlueDevil Pro on October 16, 2020 at 8:42 am

          Melodie-

The vehicle would need to be able to start and idle for a full 50 minutes in order to get the benefit of using the product. You can try checking the spark plugs to see if they’ve fouled out and are preventing the engine from cranking and replace them as needed, however, it may just be that the engine is a little too far gone at this point.

          Thank you!

Hi agin will pour n go fix valve stems covers and blow back

      • BlueDevil Pro on January 15, 2016 at 11:27 am

        Elliot-

BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer is not designed to stop leakage from valve stem seals. A valve stem seal leak is associated with oil loss rather than coolant loss. The best product to use for that type of leak is the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). Once the product is added you can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

Hello I have an 04 trailblazer I believe it’s a blown head gasket . I noticed that you say that pourngo works while driving however my truck work stay running. Once I put the product in should I try and drive it around?

          • BlueDevil Pro on November 29, 2016 at 10:33 am

            Toni-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Trailblazer. As per the directions, Start the engine while cold, then turn heater on max. With engine idling, slowly pour BlueDevil into the radiator. You should not be driving the vehicle during the 50 minute idle. Unfortunately, if the vehicle is unable to maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out, then the leak you’re having may be a little too extreme for the product. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

            Thank you!

Hi, I have a ’93 Suzuki Sidekick 1.6L 4cyl. 138,000 miles. Upon startup (only when cold, usually first start of day) a great puff of smoke comes out. It abates quickly. The smoke is whitish, grey … not white but not black either.

I usually have to put in about a half to a quart of coolant in the reservoir and a quart of oil between oil changes (every 3000 miles). The oil is normal looking (no milky color or bubbles). The engine starts easy and no misfires.

Would i be a good canditate for your stop leak product or would this situation fall under preventative? thanks.

      • BlueDevil Pro on June 19, 2017 at 12:27 pm

        Scott-

Thank you for asking about your Suzuki Sidekick. Based on your description, it does not sound like you have any of the tell-tale signs of a blown head gasket. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (https://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). As long as you are not losing water too quickly and the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, you would be a great candidate for the product.

My 2001 Jetta had begun losing water slowly (about a gallon per month) about 3 months ago. Last week suddenly I started seeing steam when I stopped at a light. When I popped the hood the steam is coming out of the engine not of it. Could this be the head gasket? Would your product work for this?

Thank you for asking about your VolksWagen Jetta. Based on your description, it doesn’t necessarily sound like you have a blown head gasket. Is the vehicle overheating at all? Does not get hot but water goes and don’t know where.please help me . I want to know for sure before I spend the money

      • BlueDevil Pro on October 24, 2015 at 10:19 am

        Alicia,

Thanks for your question about your head gasket. Based on your description you could have a blown head gasket, or simply a coolant leak somewhere on the top of your motor. If your fans don’t work and your car has overheated, that could have caused your blown head gasket. We would recommend taking your car to a second mechanic for a second opinion to make sure it is indeed a blown head gasket.

        Thanks again for your question!

    Thank you
One more question, does the other blue devil where you drain and flush the system better? And can I use two bottles of pour and go since I have a Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.7 in it that takes around three gal fully emty ? Thanks

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 20, 2015 at 9:41 am

      David-

You may use either Head Gasket Sealer. The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (32 oz./yellow label) requires both the removal of thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.

The product with the yellow label will give you best overall results as long as you can remove the thermostat and flush the system prior to use. With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use. Based on your capacity, you will only be using 16 ounces either way.

      Thanks Again!

Does your product seal more gaskets than the head gasket? For example, how about
an oil pan gasket leak? Also, how long does this treatment work for? Do I have to
treat again after a certain amount of driving? My car is a 1999 Mercedes 4 door sedan E320 with a V6 engine. Which of your products is best to use?
    Thanks so much.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 22, 2015 at 9:38 am

      Bonnie-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will seal any cooling system leaks such as head gasket leaks, leaking freeze plugs, a leaking heater core, leaking radiators, etc. We manufacture a different product, BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak, that is used to stop leaking oil pan gaskets. Both of the products do create permanent seals and only require one treatment.

I have a 75 f100 with a edelbrock 302 and I noticed a shaking in the engine. Do you think it’s a blown head gasket?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 29, 2015 at 4:04 pm

      AJ-

A “shaking” engine would not necessarily mean there is a blown head gasket. There are a number of possibilities that could cause the engine to shake more noticeably than usual.

We recommend taking your vehicle in for a tune-up to hopefully help smooth out the engine.

      Thank You!

Based on your description, we would recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. As long as your vehicle can maintain idle for 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant, then you should be able to see some good results. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is safe and compatible to use in Mercedes engines. As long as your vehicle will idle for a 50 minute period without stalling out or overheating and you will not lose more than about 1 quart of water/coolant then there is a very good chance that BlueDevil will work in remedying your blown head gasket.

So i got a 93 caprice with a 5.7 an i have just found out that i have had some coolant mix in with my oil. It will start an run but what step should i start with first?? The head gasket sealer an coolant? An do i need to have the heater core hooked up or no? Or do i start by draining the oil & filter an put new in an then use the oil sealer with the new

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 17, 2021 at 8:42 am

          KgB-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Caprice. If coolant is mixing in with the engine oil, we recommend changing the oil before and after the BlueDevil procedure. The direction involving putting the heat on with the blower to the max is to draw heat from the engine, to help the vehicle from overheating during the 50-minute idle. As long as it isn’t going to overheat, you could bypass the heater core.

          Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 18, 2015 at 2:49 pm

      Frank,

Thanks for your question about your 2000 Firebird. If you do have a blown head gasket, BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will permanently seal the leak and keep your cooling system pressurized. BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer does not contain any particulates to clog your radiator or thermostat.

You would first need to have the water pump replaced before you would be able to apply the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. Once the new water pump is reinstalled you will be able to proceed with using the BlueDevil to stop the leak(s) from your head gasket.

      • BlueDevil Pro on January 25, 2021 at 9:07 am

        Greg-

Thank you for asking about your Audi C90. In order for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer to be successful, the vehicle would need to be able to run and maintain idle for a full 50 minutes. If the vehicle is overheating or stalling out too quickly, unfortunately, the leak may be a little larger than what BlueDevil would be able to seal. A hard part repair may be your best option.

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 30, 2015 at 10:48 am

      George-

You will only need one 16 ounce bottle of the BlueDevil Pour N Go to treat your Mercedes. After the recommended 50 minute idle allow the engine to cool down, at least two hours, and at that point the vehicle should be ready to drive normally.

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 22, 2015 at 12:37 pm

Having the parts replaced would definitely fix the vehicle and get you back to driving normally. Another option would be to try the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer if you do not think the vehicle is worth spending $1200 – $3000 to repair it. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will work as long as your vehicle is able to idle a full 50 minute period without stalling out or overheating and it will not lose more than 1 quart of water during the run.

My 2002 Audi A6 2.7 T has white smoke coming out of the exhaust. The coolant reservoir was empty and the warning light came on. It has an oil leak too that leaves a few drops on the ground when it’s sitting. Will your product fix the problem?

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 3, 2015 at 1:11 pm

      Bill-

Yes, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would work to stop the coolant loss you are experiencing. If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

As for the oil leak you should add 1 bottle of the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. Expect to notice results after about 100 miles of driving.

I have a 94 f150 with a 4.9l 6cylinder. It has a leaking/blown head gasket. When your product is applied to the cooling system, how long does it take for the product to take effect? Will I need to do it repeatedly?

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 3, 2015 at 3:11 pm

      Ethan-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will create the permanent seal during the initial 50 minute idle. After the recommended 50 minute idle is complete you should allow the vehicle to cool down completely (at least 2 hours) and then you will be able to drive normally. You do not need to apply BlueDevil more than 1 time.

  31. Bulio on July 30, 2015 at 8:39 pm

I have a 2002 Acura TL Type-S w/ 185k. Car seems to be going through antifreeze even though it’s not leaking into the oil. I can smell antifreeze when I get out of the car after a drive long enough to bring the engine up to temp, but I only found a source once, the tube connected to the overflow tank had popped out of the top and it was pissing out the coolant there. This obviously isn’t the primary culprit and I picked up a bottle of your product at Auto Zone to read the information on the back. The only reason why I didn’t purchase it was from a warning in the Owners Manual as to never use any sort of coolant additives that pertains to sealants to the radiator and/or coolant system. My question to you is…can you say, without a doubt that this product would work in my vehicle (if indeed the case is the head gasket) without risking damage to the engine any further? The car runs perfectly, other than the issue I just mentioned (it may be running a bit rich, bc I don’t seem to be getting the correct avg mpg. But, I have only had this car for a few months and I had a hybrid previously so it may just be in my head). I just don’t want to potentially destroy this motor by going directly against the manufacturer’s warning.

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 4, 2015 at 3:02 pm

      Bulio-

We recommend taking the vehicle to a certified shop so that you can get a clear diagnosis. It is difficult to say what exactly is wrong with the vehicle without further diagnosis being done. It is possible that your vehicle has a blown head gasket but we would like to be sure before recommending the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer as a possible solution.

Yes, your Bronco would require two 16 ounce BlueDevil Pour N Go bottles based on the cooling capacity. You do not need to flush the system or remove the thermostat when applying the BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer.

        Thank You!

Yes, as long as the Bronco is able to idle for a full 50 minute period without stalling out or overheating then you have a great chance at the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer working properly.

I have a 2004 ford crown victoria police interceptor. Pressure builds up in cooling system and can see bubbles in reservoir. Has faint light colored smoke from exhaust but it does not run hot. Cylinders 2 & 5 have a miss but coils, plugs, and injectors are all firing. Was told head gasket is seeping allowing pressure from cylinder to escape before detonation. Am I a prime candidate for blue devil? Have sweet smell from exhaust. Will these symptoms cause it to have misfire? Do you think blue devil is answer?X

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 1, 2015 at 10:22 am

      Kenneth-

Yes, it sounds like you would be a good candidate for the product.

Based on your description, it sounds like your vehicle may be getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with a low compression reading. If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will sometimes notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull. Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly.

      Thank you!

Yes, it will work in a diesel semi truck; we have used it successfully on them in the past. You will need to add three 32 ounce bottles to treat a cooling capacity of that size. Teh thermostat should be removed and left out for the BlueDevil process.

I have 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid . Since the Hybrid runs on both gas and battery , how should i apply the BlueDevil . It is a very small leak because i just notice that the antifreeze is always missing and there is nowhere a leak to be seen . Which of your product do you recommend me to use BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer or BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer. And can you please give me some instruction on how do i use it on Hybrid

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 4, 2015 at 11:50 am

      Eddie-

Yes, you can definitely still use the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer in your Prius. Due to the small cooling system you will only need to add about 8 ounces of the product.

You may use either Head Gasket Sealer but we recommend removing the thermostat with the use of either one due to the small cooling system; this will help ensure free-flow through the cooling system.

I have a 74 Ford 390 i noticed milky white oil pouring out of the bottom of the head on drivers side and its a lot also noticed the milky white oil on dipstick I know this is cause of blown head gasket. Will your product solve the leaking head gasket? Remember it is running steady out of joint of head and block where gasket is

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 15, 2015 at 11:35 am

      T Durham-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will stop the water/antifreeze from entering the engine oil and being lost elsewhere. For best results we recommend changing the engine oil before and after the BlueDevil process.

If you are also losing oil from the block or the head gasket this will not have an effect on oil loss.

I have a 2004 Dodge SX, 186,000 km, when I had the oil changed recently, they told me that there was hardly any coolant left. This had never happened before, and I have the oil changed right on time. After the oil change and the new coolant added, I have noticed that when I park the car after driving less than 10 km it will leave a puddle of coolant on the ground. I have taken it to a garage and they did a pressure test and now they say that it needs a new gasket. Would your product solve this issue?

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 2, 2015 at 10:06 am

AS long as your vehicle can maintain a 50 minute idle without overheating or stalling out, and your not losing more than about 1 quart of coolant/water during that 50 minutes, then you would be a good candidate for the product. Feel free to contact us at 888-863-0426 with any questions.

I have a 96 mustang 3.8 V6. I replaced my radiator, spark plugs, spark plug wires and I got an oil change and did the coolant stuff. But there’s still white smoke. If I’ve already did all the other parts, would it be expensive to only replace my head gasket now. I replaced the other things just yesterday.

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 21, 2015 at 5:57 pm

      Loui,

Thanks for your question about your Mustang. If you’re sure you’ve got a blown head gasket make sure you try BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/) to seal the leak. On your vehicle, the 32oz bottle should be enough to seal your leak. To answer your question, it wouldn’t be terribly expensive to replace the head gaskets on your Mustang if you did the work yourself. You should be able to get a gasket set for less than you paid for all the parts you’ve already put into the car, but it will be hours of work, require a few special tools and you may find more damage once you get the heads off which could incur machining costs as well.

      Thanks again for your question!

I have a 1998 ford Taurus. I drive 2hours 15 minutes to work everyday. couple of weeks ago I noticed my temperature @ the warning sign, I pulled over, popped the hood and noticed that the coolant was pouring out from the reservoir cap. I allowed the engine to cool down, I open the reservoir and found it totally empty. I put coolant into it, started the car, allowed it to idle for while and noticed that the temperature was normal before driving off. But few days ago I started noticing my temperature gauge go above normal whenever am stocked in traffic. Although it does not get to the red line, and the coolant in reservoir has been turning out short after driving two and half hours to and fro from work. And I have also started to notice coolant spill on my motor block. I took the car to the mechanic for coolant flush and oil change, because I felt there could be a clog in the cooling channel, but instead the mechanic told me it will be a waste of money, that my head gasket is going bad. And the only resolve is to replace my head gasket. Please, I need your professional advice on what to do. Thanks.

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 30, 2015 at 7:38 pm

      Charles,

Thanks for your question about your Ford Taurus. Based on the symptoms you’re having it does sound like you have a bad head gasket. Many auto parts stores sell a chemical test kit that will test for exhaust gas chemicals in your coolant to positively verify a blown head gasket. In your case, it sounds like you still have a small leak so we would recommend using BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/pour-n-go-head-gasket-sealer-00209/) to seal your leak and keep your car from overheating.

      Thanks again for your question!

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 29, 2015 at 3:48 pm

      Chase-

You may use either BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer.
However, if the thermostat is difficult to remove or you would rather not then you can always use the “Pour N Go”. With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use. Based on your capacity, you will be using 16 ounces either way.

      Thank you!

This is most likely caused by blow-by. However, we recommend that you first check and make sure that the oil level is not above the full mark. If it appears the oil level is good then you should have the PCV valves inspected and potentially replaced.

You may first want to confirm that exhaust or combustion gases are present in the cooling system by using a “Block Dye Tester”.

We do recommend using BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer for your Ford truck.

If you confirm that combustion/exhaust gases are getting into the cooling system then we recommend using BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading. If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull. Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly. All of this started after I hit a raised manhole cover and the upper radiator hose came loose. I am pouring in about a 1/4 cup antifreeze before driving everyday. No sign of leak in driveway. I was told that because I drove without antifreeze that the head gasket was blown and that it would cost about $1,600.00 to replace. Doesn’t seem to be any water in oil or white smoke from exhaust. Not sure if car can idle for 50 minutes before overheating without the re circulation fans or heater turned on. Will product work in this situation?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 5, 2016 at 2:20 pm

      Hellene-

Thank you for asking about your Buick LeSabre. Unfortunately, based on your description, the head gasket may be a little too far gone for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer to be effective in this situation. In order to get the benefit of the product, the vehicle would need to be able to idle for a full 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

I have a 2005 didge caravan. Was told I have a blown head gasket. I have already replaced the oil it was extremely dark but not milky. The only symptoms I have are a knocking sound from what I presume is a loose rod, and the antifreeze disappears rather quickly with no noticeable leaks. Should I try your product? And where should I put it? In the engine or the the antifreeze? Thanks

If your vehicle is able to idle for a 50 minute period without stalling out or overheating and will not lose more than about 1 quart of water/coolant during that time period then there is a good chance that BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would be able to work for you.

I have a question. I’m having my Cylinder Head replaced on my Honda Accord. I was told to get a Cylinder Head and a Head Gasket Set. I think I may also have a blown head gasket would fixing the Cylinder Head require the Head Gasket to be fixed? Will the gaskets in the set be used to replaced Blown Head Gaskets?

    • BD Auto Pro on May 25, 2016 at 5:45 pm

      The Man,

Thanks for your question about your Honda Accord. If you’re having the head replaced we would definitely recommend replacing the head gasket as well. The new head will need a new gasket to make a good seal. If you get a new head and head gasket it should fix a blown head gasket you previously had as long as the deck of your engine block is still in good condition. You may consider having the mechanic doing the work check the engine block for flatness before installing the new head and head gasket.

      Thanks again for your question!

If you are able to get the engine to idle for a continuous 50 minute period then you are able to use BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. Many hybrid vehicles will not idle for a long period of time as the engine often shuts off and runs electrically. If this is the case with your Prius then we would not recommend using BlueDevil.

The issue with my truck is that I can not get it to run continuously for longer than maybe 5-10 seconds. I’m going to try and run a compression test tonight or tomorrow to define whether or not it is the gasket, and if so between which cylinders.

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Ram. In order to have success with the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer, the vehicle would need to be able to idle for a full 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out. If the vehicle is unable to do so, unfortunately, it may mean that the leak or symptoms the vehicle is having are a little too extreme for the product. Hi there,

Happened across this site when searching for general instructions on how to replace a head gasket. I have a 1992 Mazda B2600i 2WD (rear wheel) pickup. My particular leak apparently doesn’t mix with the oil – just burns in one cylinder (plug looks wet and ‘clean’) sending white smoke out the exhaust when cold outside (no visible exhaust on warm days). This has gone on for a couple years. I attempted to repair the leak using BarsLeaks but now things are worse – before the heater functioned, now after treatment its inadequate and I even had to remove the thermostat to prevent overheating after driving it just a few miles. I have to feed it antifreeze before going on a trip. On relatively short trips after parking I notice antifreeze leaking from the intake manifold side of the engine but can’t spot specifically the leak location. On longer trips any leaking apparently stops. Illogical enough symptoms so far?

I tried to reverse the BarsLeaks treatment by flushing the engine using IronTite which is supposed to largely remove the product from the system (well ok maybe). That had no effect, same symptoms persist. So then, what do you think the odds are that your product(s) (which one is recommended?) will work? I’ve pretty much resigned myself to a head gasket replacement but if you think your product is worth trying as a last resort before I do that, please advise.

Forgot to mention, the Haines manual for my truck (the 1992 Mazda B2600i) indicates that even one overheating event will likely result in a warped head. So maybe I’ll have to replace the gasket in any case since there’ve been several overheating events, though in every event I’ve tried to take action to stop engine operation before the temperature gage has passed from the top of the normal range into the excessive heat range.

And one more question: BarsLeaks formula (far as I’m aware) consists of ceramic microfibers and copper particles. It not only didn’t work, but it apparently made things worse. How is your product different?
    Thank you,
    Bill

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 30, 2016 at 3:17 pm

      Bill-

Thank you for asking about your Mazda B2600i. As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minutes, you would be a great candidate for the product.
It sounds like your Mazda may be getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure.
BlueDevil does not contain any solid or particulate matter, so it will not clog or harm your engine. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

      Thank you!

Long term, how does BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer effect other components of the cooling system, such as the radiator and the heater core? Some products end up “coating or clogging” those items, which can be very expensive to repair or replace.

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 21, 2016 at 3:14 pm

      Bob-

No, the product does not continue to harden over time; it only reacts during 1 heat cycle. During the initial idle BlueDevil reacts to temperature differential at the leak point to form a chemical weld. Therefore the product does not coat your entire cooling system or cause restriction of flow or clogging.

      Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 30, 2017 at 1:58 pm

      Armando-

Thank you for asking about your Jeep Wrangler. It is possible that you are getting combustion/exhaust gases pumping back into the cooling system.  You can use a “Block Dye Tester” to confirm whether or not that is the case.
BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will still work if your vehicle is getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system.

      Lakeya-

Thank you for asking about your Ford Fusion. Are you noticing a loss of water/coolant? knocking or ticking sounds from the engine can sometimes mean you have water getting into the engine oil, which would be a tell-tale sign of a blown head gasket. If that is the case, you would be a great candidate for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/. About 6 month ago I noticed my truck was using a lot of coolant. I have a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 4.8L and it has been using about a gallon every oil change. The oil has been really sludgy when changed and I mean like big globbs of sludge coming out of the oil pan. Now, after about 6 months when I start the truck white/blue smoke comes out of the exhuast, just on start up and then it runs clean. I read on some forums that 99-06 gm trucks have had a problem with cracked heads, not the gasket. Would Blue Devil seal a cracked head, a crack where it bolts to the block?

Ok, I went out and bought Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealer but I’m confused on how to add the sealer. GM vehicles do not have access to the radiator, just the overflow bottle. I have removed the thermostat and I have drained the coolant by taking off the bottom radiator hose. I have filled it up with water but I do not know how to add the sealant. How do you add the sealant to an 04 GMC Sierra?

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 7, 2017 at 12:38 pm

          Josh-

Thank you for asking about your GMC Sierra. If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring it through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there (it may be added into the hose or through the opening).  Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

          Thank you!

      Kenneth-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Impala. Water leaking out of the muffler doesn’t necessarily mean you have a blown head gasket, however, The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would be able to seal that kind of a leak. Hi,
I have a Nissan Sentra 2002, which got overheated. Heat goes up when driving, but drops down to stable on parking. I took it to the mechanics, they flushed, and checked by replacing the thermostat and water pump. They also changed the engine oil. None of these worked and they suggested me to change head gasket. Would you let me know whether the BlueDevil seal works in my case. If so, let me know how to use it.

I have a 2001 Buick Century that I bought as a work car. I think, but cannot guarantee, that the previous owner may have used a different brand of head gasket sealer that is not anti freeze compatible. I recently started to have issues with the car overheating, but blowing cold air. I noticed a bunch of residue and “chunks” of stuff in my radiator. I did a full flush and ran plain water through it for a few days and then flushed again. After a few days of just water I added anti freeze. The chunks are back and so are the problems. Do you recommend a flush again to clean out the chunks, run with just water and then add the product? Also, is this anti freeze compatible?

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 13, 2017 at 10:16 am

      Glenda-

Thank you for asking about your Buick Century. Yes, the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/pour-n-go-head-gasket-sealer-00209/) is safe and compatible to use with antifreeze. Based on your description, we recommend bringing the vehicle to a shop with a flushing machine for a proper cooling system flush. I trust BlueDevil because i have used it before and it worked 100% . I used the BlueDevil with instruction to remove the thermostat . I have now a different car , so i want to make sure that the problem is a head gasket . Its 2004 Mazda 6 3.0 V6 and when i hit a gas pedal you can notice a huge white smoke coming out of muffler . When i open a Antifreeze tank , i notice that its dirty and looks oily . So what do you prefer me to use : BlueDevil Pure -N-Go or the other one where i have to take out a thermostat . Thank you
P.S: i know that the instructions are on the bottle , can you please write me in a few words the best way i should work . Do i have to flush the engine or what i should do first .

Found out the reason my car wasn’t starting was because of blown head gasket. Oil has not mixed with water still has the brownish looking color. Being that I can’t get the car started would this product repair the head gasket if I can get someone to get the car started.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 10, 2017 at 9:56 am

      TJ-

In order to get the benefit of using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer, the vehicle would need to be able to idle for a full 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out. If the vehicle is unable to do so, unfortunately, it would not be a good candidate for the product. A hard part repair may be your best option.

Hi! I have an 05 Hyundai Elantra that keeps overheating on highway speed. Was just told the head gasket is cracked and losing coolant. Hose has been replaced and cant find where fluid is going. Sound like a candidate for the product?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 6, 2017 at 10:39 am

      Bill-

Thank you for asking about your Huundai Elantra. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. As long as the vehicle can maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minutes, you would be a great candidate for the product.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 13, 2017 at 9:43 am

      Amanda-

Thank you for asking about your Acura MDX.
Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system.

      Thank you!

    Hi,

I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy with 200,000 kms on the clock (about 125,000 miles).

No signs of oil leaking from the seals at this stage but it’s around this mileage that these Subaru’s start to require head gasket repairs / maintenance.

I’m wondering whether this product is useful as a preventative measure? Or should it only be used to react to an existing issue? Can I ruin anything by using it in this way?

Also how much fluid would this make / model of vehicle require?

    Thanks

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 2, 2018 at 9:48 am

      Pete-

Thank you for asking about your Subaru Legacy. Unfortunately, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer should not be used as a preventative measure or as a preventative maintenance. Also, it is only intended for water/coolant leaks. Using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer as a preventive measure could cause adverse affects. However, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak can be used as a preventative measure. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended for the rubber seals/gaskets in the fluid oil system, so it sounds like this may be applicable to you. I have a valve cover leak, oil pan leak and trans pan leak. What products will work to stop them if any?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 25, 2018 at 8:45 am

      Don-

Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (https://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is more concentrated and is the universal application that will work for various leaks such as oil pan leaks, rear main leaks, valve cover gasket leaks, etc. It would also treat a leaking transmission pan gasket. One 8 oz. bottle will treat 4-6 quarts of oil, and use one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system for the transmission leak.

My Mother in law has a 92 Pontiac Bonneville V6 that has oil in the radiator tank. I topped up the antifreeze and noticed oil on the fluid. I test drove it and warmed up and fluid is milky and definitely oil on the rad fluid. We may try to seal it but the car is hardly worth spending much to repair it. Would this possibly be able to be sealed?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 3, 2018 at 8:44 am

      Wayne-

Thank you for asking about your Mother-in-Law’s Pontiac Bonneville. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop oil from getting into the radiator. Our Head Gasket Sealer is only intended for water/coolant leaks. A hard part repair may be your best option.

Are you sure it’s oil and not trans fluid? The transmission cooler is built into the radiator and could have ruptured.

I used your product on a 2005 Pontiac v-6 which was blowing white smoke , giving a misfire code on one cylinder and overheating. I put your product in and within 5 minutes everything was fixed like magic. I drove the car a few hundred miles for the next few days and everything was fine. Then after leaving the car sitting for a few days i noticed the radiator hoses were sucked in like the cooling system went into a vacuum. After driving the car that day the temperature was back in the red and running too hot. The white smoke did not come back and the miss fire is still gone. But the engine coolant is boiling over again. (and yes the electric fan is working and the thermostat was replaced before I added the blue devil product) Did the vacuum in the cooling system suck your product back out of the damaged head gasket?

I was ready to replace the head gaskets, but after looking at how hard it is to pull the heads on this engine , I wonder if I should try putting in another can of blue devil to try again. What do you think? Do I need to worry about plugging up the Radiator?

You can still use the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer to treat a V-8, you would just need two bottles to properly treat the larger system. The amount of product being used would be determined by the size of the cooling system it is being put into.

Thank you for asking about your Acura MDX. As long as the vehicle can maintain idle without overheating, and you aren’t losing water/coolant too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the product. Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal.
