Why is my Car Burning Oil?

#driveyourlife

car burning oilWhen you’re buying a used car, there a lot of things to check over to make sure you’re getting a quality vehicle.  There are some easy things to check like how faded the paint is and if there are any rips in upholstery.  But there are some more difficult things to check as well that can tell you a lot about the car you’re thinking of purchasing.

One of the things you can look at is the condition of the tires.  Checking for odd wear patterns like a tire that is bald on the inside but has plenty of tread on the outside can indicate a poor alignment or bent suspension components that means the car has been in an accident.  Another thing to look at is the underside of the car.  If it is covered in grease and road grime it can indicate an oil leak that has been allowed to continue rather than be fixed.  This may indicate that regular maintenance was neglected on that vehicle and there may be more problems lurking under the hood.

The condition of a motor and transmission can be difficult to diagnose since any problems wouldn’t be visible from the outside.  A good test drive can often give you a good idea of the condition of both.  While you’re driving listen for knocking, ticking or tapping from the motor and make sure the transmission shifts smoothly.

The other thing to check for on an older car is if the car is burning oil.  If you own a car that is burning oil, you can often tell by regularly checking the engine oil level and notice it dropping steadily without any external leaks.  If you’re looking at buying a car, you can only check for it burning oil by watching the exhaust gas for signs of burnt oil.  If an engine is burning oil, it is most often noticeable when starting the car while the engine is cold or when quickly accelerating from a stop.  If the car is burning oil you’ll notice some blue smoke from the exhaust pipe either when starting the motor, or accelerating from a stop.

A car may be burning oil for a few different reasons.  The two most common are because it is bypassing the piston rings, or leaking past the valve seals.  Your piston rings seal the combustion gases inside your engine’s cylinder so your engine will make the maximum power, but they also seal the engine oil out of the combustion chamber.  If your engine’s piston rings are worn out from high mileage or poor maintenance they can allow small amounts of oil past to be burnt during the combustion process.  This produces the blue smoke in your exhaust during acceleration.

Engine oil also circulates around the valves in your engine’s head.  There are seals around each valve to keep the oil from leaking into the combustion chamber.  These seals can wear out from high mileage, from low oil levels or they can simply dry out and crack if your car isn’t driven often.  If your valve seals are bad they can allow oil to seep past them while your engine is off allowing the oil to pool on the piston.  When you start your car you’ll notice the same blue cloud of burnt oil from the exhaust as the pooled oil burns off the top of the piston.

If you discover your car has worn valve seals and is burning oil upon start up, you may consider the option of having your valve seals replaced.  Unfortunately this can be a very expensive maintenance item as it usually requires removal of your engine’s head and careful work done on all the valves.  The better option is to use BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak to recondition and revitalize your valve seals to stop the leak and keep your car from burning oil.

I am just trying to find out… I bought the oil stop leak blue devil product, and i see on the back that it say I need to run the engine 1-2 hours to seal the leak.. but I am trying to find out do i need to let it idal for that time, do I need to be driving for that time, do I need to do both, or do it matter which 1..

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 23, 2015 at 10:47 am

      Antwan-

In order for the product to seal, you will be driving the vehicle, not just letting it idle. Typically, you should start to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

Thank you for asking about your Ford. Unfortunately, it would be difficult to pinpoint the location of the leak without physically being able to look at the vehicle. If you are not quite sure as to the location of the leak, the best product to use would be the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. The Oil Stop Leak is a universal application and would be able to treat a seep or light drip coming from the oil pan gasket, valve cover seal, rear main seal, etc.

        Thank you!

    Dear sir,
I using Chevrolet spark model. But last 3 month i notice to my oil leval very low aome time and some times not any effect. My exhaust pipe not any blue smock but white small amount smock with burning oil small. So pls blue devil product help to stop burning oil problem.

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 13, 2016 at 9:27 am

      Anirudhsinh-

Thank you for asking about your Chevrolet. White smoke would indicate water/coolant burning and blue smoke would indicate oil burning. If you are noticing a loss of oil, you would be a great candidate for the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak, however, you may have multiple leaks, based on your description. We recommend taking the vehicle to a certified ASE mechanic for a proper diagnosis.

      Thank you!

      Khanh-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Rav4. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is only intended for the rubber seals/gaskets in the system. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop piston leaks. A hard part repair may be your best option.

The smoke from my exhaust is more white than blue, however I am losing oil and having to top up every few weeks.
Also a burning smell.Smoke intermittent.Usually none but suddenly some.It disappears after a short time.
Smoke when I start, occasionally while driving.
I failed emissions test at M O T but put on petrol additive to clean the engine and it passed.
    Will your product help?.

    Hi Madhu here,
Issue: Oil burning, every time when I come from long ride I suppose to refill engine oil.
I had brought santro xing 2006 model used car before 4 months back and I have refilled engine oil 3 time.
    No leakage
    No blue gas
Changed oil filter and no leakage on the same
Can please suggest me how do I make sure wat exactly the problem it is.
Do I need to go for engine rebore?

    • BD Auto Pro on October 16, 2017 at 9:30 am

      Madhu,

Thanks for your question about your car. If you are sure that the engine isn’t leaking any oil externally then it is possible that oil is getting into the combustion chamber and being burnt. You can try checking your spark plugs for black soot that would be left behind by burning oil. Make sure you check all the plugs as only 1 or 2 cylinders may have oil leaking into them. Oil gets into the combustion chamber either by leaking past the valve seals or by sneaking past a worn piston ring. If the oil is leaking past the valve seals you usually get a small puff of smoke right when you start your engine or on acceleration. If it’s leaking past the piston rings you often lose the most oil while driving at higher engine RPM. If you’ve got bad valve seals you can replace the head on your engine, or rebuild your old one. If you’ve got bad piston rings you often will also find low compression in those cylinders and will need to rebore your engine and install new piston rings.

      Thanks again for your question!

    I own a 2012 Toyota Tacoma – 4.0

I NEVER had an oil consumption or coolant consumption issue UNTIL a local Toyota dealership worked on this engine; The work done was to removed the heads and replace head gskts.
I have taken my vehicle back to several dealerships where several diagnostics have been performed; According to Toyota Canada’s Oil consumption test, my engine IS CONSUMING EXCESSIVE ALMOUNTS OF OIL. Amost 6 ltrs between oil changes.

I had the oil and coolant tested through Finning; Coolant shows high levels of Silicate additive; the oil analysis show higher than normal sodium levels…

The oil consumption has be difficult to detect the problem. NO EXTERNAL LEAKS But my engine IS CONSUMING OIL and Coolant.

Are you aware of a dye test which I can add to my oil … when burned in the combustion chamber…will it show up at the tail pipe. Same with the coolant…if a dye was added

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 18, 2017 at 9:58 am

      Bernie-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Tacoma. Based on your description, the oil consumption your vehicle is experiencing could be a result of blown/leaking head gaskets. We recommend taking the vehicle back to the shop that did the work originally for a diagnosis. Are you experiencing a misfire reading or a rough idle or anything like that? A Block Dye test could be used to test for combustion/exhaust getting back into the cooling system. It’s possible that the heads weren’t machined or smoothed properly and water and/or oil are getting back into the cylinders. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

    Hello!

    I own a 2003 Honda Accord Coupe, 4CYL Manual
I just topped off my oil about 2 weeks ago because it was at the half mark on the dip stick and it’s already getting towards the half mark again, I don’t know what’s consuming my oil! As of right now I see white smoke from exhaust mainly because it’s winter but I can’t tell if it’s actually the exhaust or the steam making smoke. I don’t smell any burning or see any leaks. I’m a DIY kind of guy and I do all repairs myself unless it’s a major repair. I need some advice!

    • BD Auto Pro on December 26, 2017 at 10:47 am

      Edwin,

Thanks for your question about your 2003 Accord. It isn’t unusual for some cars to use up to 2 quarts of oil in between oil changes, even if the engine is running perfectly. The oil may be seeping past the valve seals or piston rings and burning or it may be leaking in a hard to see area of the engine. If you can’t see any leaks you could try checking the compression of each cylinder without adding any oil to see if the piston rings sealing properly. Apart from that, it may just be worth checking your oil every 1000 miles to make sure it’s at a safe level.

      Thanks again for your question!

I ended up cleaning my pcv valve and my oil stopped disappearing but now once again it’s kind of gone, refilled it and it hasn’t drained ever since.. although my coolant reservoir doesn’t look green, more of an oily coolant! And the top of my oil cap had a very light white coating, so light that it was only visible as white by me scraping it with my nail and seeing the color. Could this be a head gasket leak? Or could my oil still be seeping into pistons or something? I do have mad carbon buildup and attempted seafoam (trash) and royal purple.. it’s still running through my fuel but just waiting for results lol but about the head gasket.. does it sound like symptoms? I don’t notice any difference in exhaust smoke just extremely random oil consumption. I can fill it, it stays normal for a good 2-3 weeks and boom it’s about at the half mark, fill it and it’s good.

        • BlueDevil Pro on January 12, 2018 at 1:45 pm

          Edwin-

Based on your description, it does not sound like you have any of the tell-tale signs of a blown head gasket. You may want to have a block-dye test performed to check for combustion/exhaust gases being present in the cooling system, which would be a symptom of a blown head gasket. Other than that, it could be a head gasket leaking oil, which may be why it is consuming oil and getting back into the cylinders.

          Hope this helps!

    Hi,
I read above questions and answers about oil burning but i might have different situation so wanted to ask. I noticed that engine in my 2007 Camry LE 4cyl is burning oil a lot since in between oil change (i usually do within 3,000 miles), oil is completely gone, sometimes it does not even show in dip stick. Engine has been running good, no issues, no blue smoke, no oil leak under the car.
However, this morning i added 1 quart oil and coolant as it was also low then run the car engine temperature went high. Heat did not work either. So, is there more than 1 thing going on and interconnected here?
can any of your product help?
    I appreciate any advice.

It almost sounds like a head gasket leak, they both might be leaking together and burning together. Normally exhaust smoke isn’t something everyone pays attention to. Fill them both up to spec and keep an eye on the sides of your engine and your exhaust smoke.

Hi! I own a 2011 Skoda Yeti 1.2TSi. I bought the car new now has 120,000 kilometers on the odometer.
Been burning up oil ever since I bought it, about 150ml/1000km. In the owner’s manual it states that it can burn up to 500ml/1000km which I think it’s excessive. Any idea why it’s been burning up oil ever since it was bought and why the factory would state that as “normal”?
Is there anything I can do about it?

I own a 1994 Nissan pickup (6 cylinder-stick shift-4 wheel drive). I purchased it from original owner in 1997 with 30,000 miles on it. It currently has 131,000 miles on it. Last summer I noticed that my oil light came on after about 600 miles put on vehicle since an oil change. I again brought the vehicle in for another oil change, and again. with 500 miles put on vehicle the oil light came back on. What could be causing it to burn so much oil so fast? I will have a mechanic look at vehicle this weekend and diagnosis it and find out what is going on. What could be going wrong with it?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 26, 2018 at 8:42 am

Thank you for asking about your Nissan Pickup. It is not uncommon for a vehicle of that age to have seals that have deteriorated and become brittle. When the rubber seals/gaskets start to deteriorate, they will shrink and crack and thusly, that’s how leaks form. My 2002 Mitsubishi montero sport burns through oil pretty quickly. After a few hundred miles it gets low enough that my engine gets a knock. I can see white smoke coming from my engine and tailpipe at times. I’ve also never really checked to see if my coolant levels change. What do you reccomend?

    • BD Auto Pro on July 9, 2018 at 9:55 pm

      Nathan,

Thanks for your question about your 2002 Mitsubishi Montero. White smoke is usually associated with burning coolant. If you see steam coming from your engine try looking for an external coolant leak and using the appropriate leak stop product based on the leak location. If you’ve got white smoke from your tailpipe, try reading our article about blown head gasket symptoms here: https://gobdp.com/blog/what-are-the-symptoms-of-a-blown-head-gasket/.

As for the loss of oil, if you don’t see any leaks or drips under your car it is likely that your car is burning it. Different vehicles will use different amounts of oil under normal circumstances but 1 quart every 3000 miles is about the limit of normal oil usage. If your car is burning oil it would either be from worn piston rings or worn valve seals. You can try doing a compression test on your engine to check the piston rings and worn valve seals will cause blue smoke on startup.

      Thanks again for your question!

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 16, 2018 at 11:00 am

      William-

That blueish smoke you are seeing is an indication of oil burning. The higher altitude would not cause the vehicle to lose oil any faster. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (https://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). You should expect to see results in approximately 160-320 kms.

        • BlueDevil Pro on July 17, 2018 at 11:59 am

          William-

Blueish smoke coming from your tail pipe is an early indication that your piston rings, valve seals, or valve guides are allowing oil to burn inside of the engine. In order for the blueish smoke to come out of the tail pipe, the oil would be passing through the catalytic converter. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended to treat rubber seals/gaskets, so it would address the loss of oil you are experiencing.

          Thank you!

Hi, I got a 2010 Nissan Altima 6 months back from a Nissan dealer, but the engine light came on within 3 months. After diagnosis, the same dealer told engine oil sludge is the reason and flushed the engine. But it was still eating up the engine oil (no leaking on the floor) heavily (4 quarts in 1200 miles!) and check light is back in a month. It is consistently emitting whitish smoke through the tailpipe once a day (mostly 2nd or 3rd time I start the engine in a day). What could be the problem? Coolent seems fine. Thank you for asking about your Nissan Altima. Although you mentioned the coolant seems fine, whitish smoke would indicate water/coolant burning. A bluish smoke would indicate oil burning. Based on your description, you may be losing coolant as well as engine oil. Hello Sir,
I use a Honda Accord Coupe (Auto). I noticed oil shortage in my car. It’s a month already since I serviced it and its already gauged on half level. I noticed oil spread underneath the car but it doesn’t drop on d floor. I also only see little white smoke in d morning when warming d car which stop after like 30 secs or 1 minute. And also when I race while on pack, d white comes out a little and stop also. Please what do I need to do?

Hi , i got a toyota tercel 97 , then know’n for burning oil , and my smoke turning blue only when i start the car .Do you know whats the risk to ride with this or the only one is to keep an eye on the oil level? Thanks

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 2, 2019 at 9:39 am

      Drew-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Tercel. The risk you run is potentially allowing parts of the engine, such as seals and gaskets, to not be properly lubricated, thusly allowing them to become brittle and deteriorate and develop more leaks. You would definitely want to keep an eye on the engine oil level and make sure it does not go below the Minimum.

Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal. You should only need to use the product once. It is not the kind of thing that you would have to add with every oil change or periodically. You are able to utilize the Oil Stop Leak as a preventative measure, however, it is not mandatory.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 24, 2019 at 2:34 pm

      Brad-

Thank you for asking about your BMW 118i. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended to treat leaks coming from rubber seals/gaskets. If the leak is indeed coming from one of those rubbers, you would be a good candidate for the product. If you are not 100% sure where the leak is coming from, it would be safe to add the product, as it does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not cause any adverse affects.

What does black smoke and a burning smell mean? Also it doesn’t do it all the time. I can see that my front seal is leaking. Seems to burn oil faster at times. Your product did not do anything to help. Burning smell is like rubber burning. Catalytic converter seems hot sometimes. Started burning smell after spark plug change. Been burning oil since I used sea foam in crank case.

Hi, my situation is similar to many above. We have a 2005 Honda CR-V. No external leaks, and burns about one quart every 600-700 miles. I can’t determine if the issue is top side (valve seals) or bottom end (piston rings). Simple question(s): Does the Blue Devil product help with piston ring issues, or only the valve seals? Second, most products that help with leaks come with a risk of sealing intended pathways. Will Blue Devil clog up small passages that need to stay open?
Thank you for a very helpful forum!

    Hello!

This is a great piece of writing as I am trying to assess why my 2013 Audi Q5 is burning through oil (I’m certain is it not a leak). I guess my question is, how do I know whether the oil is burning because of bad piston rings or if it is because of the cracked/rotted valve seals? I would love to purchase your product but I know it is only intended for the valve seal issue.

    Thank you in advance!

    • BD Auto Pro on January 1, 2020 at 9:40 am

      Austin,

Thanks for your question about your Audi Q5. If you’ve got leaking valve seals the oil will slowly seep past the valve seals into the combustion chamber as your car sits while it’s parked. A car with leaky valve seals will give a puff of blue smoke that smells like burnt oil when you first start it up in the morning or after it’s sat for a few hours. Once the vehicle is running and warmed up the blue smoke should go away.

If oil is leaking past your piston rings either from worn rings or worn cylinders, you may get a little oil smoke when you start it but the most noticeable oil smoke will be one the engine is warmed up and you accelerate quickly from a stop. Worn rings will also usually show low compression numbers.

      Thanks again for your question!

Hello! I just bought a 2008 Kia Sedona with 208,000 miles for cash because my 2013 Toyota Camry was totaled. It just passed inspection, got an oil change and runs/drives great, but I sometimes smell what seems like oil burning. There is no leak and no blue smoke, or smoke of any kind for that matter. Any ideas? Thanks!

    • BD Auto Pro on March 11, 2020 at 10:33 pm

      Mellarie,

Thanks for your questions about your 2008 Kia Sedona. It’s possible that when you got the oil changed some oil spilled on the exhaust and is still burning off. If that was the case the smell should only last for 100 miles or so. If you have a continuing burning smell then most likely you have a slow oil leak onto a hot exhaust component. The most common place this happens is from the valve cover gaskets. If you have a V6 engine in your Sedona, it could also be a leaking oil pan gasket.

      Thanks again for your question!

Get a UV dye product made for Oil and put it in the oil. Then drive it for a couple days you can then use a uv light or black light to see if your car is leaking oil easily. The UV dye does not burn up either so you will be able to tell where its leaking from for sure. Then depending on what is leaking use the right blue devil product to fix the issue. This dye does not damage the oil or the car in anyway many oil companies put uv dye in there oil to help people see where oil is leaking from now aswell.

      Jennifer-

Thank you for asking about your Nissan Altima. As long as the leak isn’t more than seeping or lightly dripping, we recommend using the BlueDevil Stop Smoke & Engine Repair. The product would be perfect for sealing the type of leak you’ve described.

      Thank you!

    Hi
    2004 Hyundai Elantra
Getting blue smoke from exhaust when I start the car in morning. I checked the exhaust and burned oil (black oil) is there in exhaust pipe. Checked with local mechanic and one said engine is worn out. it has 94k miles only.
any recommendation(s) to fix the issue?
    Many thanks!

      Joven-

Thank you for asking about your Hyundai Elantra. Based on your description, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Stop Smoke & Engine Repair. The product works by revitalizing worn and damaged seals and will help to stop the blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. Results will be noticeable after 100 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

My car is consuming oil by the day and no smoking rides and drive normal. I made a mistake of not keeping up with my anti freeze and my car was mis firing and mechanic did a valve adjustment and later that day misfire comes back the whole time it was because no anti freeze now my car is consuming oil by the day no oil on ground but my car runs normal until all the oil is gone misfire where is the oil going?

      Robert-

It’s possible the oil is getting into the cylinders, creating the misfires, although it doesn’t seem like you have any blue smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. Have you had the antifreeze issue diagnosed? Please contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 so that we can get a little better understanding of the vehicle’s condition and be able to make any appropriate recommendations.

      Thank you!

I have Fiat grande punto 90hp diesel 2010 model. There is a lot of burning smell, blue , grey smoke also. I have to put 1 litre oil after every 400km. My mechanic told that it seems to be turbocharger problem. Can you suggest anything

      Amrinder-

Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to seal a leaking turbo. A hard part repair may be your best option.

      Francis-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Altezza. Is the smoke coming from the tail pipe or from underneath the hood? Is it more of a blue smoke? Please contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 so that we can get a little better understanding of the vehicle’s condition and be able to make any appropriate recommendations.

      Thank you!
