Why is My Valve Cover Gasket Leaking?

#driveyourlife

Your valve cover gasket may be leaking for a variety of reasons.  It could be shrunken, cracked or rotten, or your valve cover itself may be cracked or broken or one of the valve cover bolts may just be loose, allowing a little leak.

Your car may have 1 or 2 valve covers depending on its configuration.  A straight 4 or 6 cylinder engine will have 1 valve cover, while “V” configured engines like a V6 or V8 will have 2 valve covers, one on each side.  The valve cover sits on top of the cylinder head and does just what its name suggests, covers the valves.  The valves in your engine are opened and closed either by a rocker arm that is moved either directly by the camshaft lobs, or by pushrods that ride on the cam shaft lobs.  The valves, rockers and pushrods or camshaft all need to be lubricated with engine oil to stay cool and not wear out.  The oil pump draws oil out of the oil pan and pushes it through the oil filter, then up into the engine head where it can lubricate all the moving components and then it drains through small holes back into the oil pan through the block.

This means that there should not be any high-pressure oil around the valves, simply oil flowing around them.  The lack of high-pressure oil under the valve cover gasket means that most valve cover gasket leaks will be very slow, or more of a weep rather than a stream or a squirt.  This can make them difficult to diagnose as there will be less evidence of the leak.  Even though they can be slower leaks, fixing a valve cover gasket leak quickly is important for a few reasons.  First, the oil can leak onto the exhaust manifold causing fumes and the possibility of a fire.  Also, a slow leak can still deplete your engine oil quickly, causing premature wear or even catastrophic damage to your engine.

How to identify a valve cover gasket leak

Valve cover gasket leak www siennachat comFirst, let’s make sure you actually have a leak coming from your valve cover gasket.  Nothing is more frustrating than putting a lot of time and energy into solving a problem, only to find out all that work was for nothing and your problem was actually something else.  Luckily valve cover gaskets can usually be pretty easy to diagnose.  The valve cover gasket is almost always the highest seal in the engine.  Your job is to find the evidence of the leak, or dripping oil and follow the drip higher and higher on the engine until it disappears.  This can be pretty easy if it is on the front or side of the engine, but if the leak is in the back near the firewall it can be difficult to do without a flashlight and a mirror.  The best way to check for a valve cover leak is to move enough things out of the way that you can check the whole perimeter of the valve cover from the top side.  This may involve removing spark plug wires, throttle linkages or even the intake manifold.

Once you have the entire perimeter of the valve cover gasket visible, you need to check for a few things:

Valve cover inspection:

  1. Loose or missing bolts or screws
  2. Cracks in the valve cover
  3. Part of the gasket sticking out from under the valve cover
  4. Evidence of a leak in the form of oil or black residue around the edge of the valve cover.

Once you’ve proved you have a valve cover gasket or another type of oil leak (if so, you may want to look at an oil leak sealant), you need to decide how to move forward.  If you have a missing bolt or screw, it should be replaced immediately.  The easiest way to do that is to remove a second bolt and take it to your local hardware store and ask them to match it.  When replacing both, make sure to use a torque wrench to torque the bolts to the factory recommended setting.  If you tighten them too much, you can risk breaking the valve cover, and if too loose, they can fall out again or cause a leak.  If the valve cover is cracked or broken, get a replacement valve from the dealer, a junkyard, or even try eBay.

How to fix a valve cover gasket leak

If you find evidence of a leak, the best solution is to use BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak.  Adding 8oz. of BlueDevil oil stop leak to your engine oil is guaranteed to permanently seal any oil leaks in your vehicle’s engine.  BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is not a petroleum distillate like other stop leak products on the market today.  That means BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak can act as a valve cover gasket sealer and stay in your engine oil until your next oil change and will not clog or harm your engine in any way.  BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak will restore dried, cracked or shrunken seals to original size and shape, allowing them to reseal and stop your leak.

I have a 1987 Nissan 300zx that will over heat right at about 25 minutes of freeway driving at 65 MPH. After a lot of checking my mechanic finally found radiator fluid in my first cylinder. No where else. Will your Blue Devil product help me? Keep in mind I have had this car for a long time and it it still pretty clean. I plan to keep it for a long time. That in mind will your product do the trick, or should I bit the bullet and get the head job?

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 31, 2014 at 3:29 pm

As long as your vehicle will be able to idle for a full 50 minutes without overheating, or stalling out, then you should have no problem in sealing it with BlueDevil.

That is excellent to hear! Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal, so you should be good to go at this point. Please keep us posted.

Thank you for asking about your Ford Fiesta. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop to help stop the loss of oil you’re experiencing. If the valve cover gasket was just replaced, it’s possible the leak is coming from a different component and would be worth trying the product on. Expect to start seeing results after 100-200 miles of driving.

          Thank you!

I have a 1992 dodge shadow with a headgasket leak. I bought a bottle of your Blue Devil headgasket stop and go sealer. I flushed the cooling system out througlhly, filled it with water and flushed it again. I replaced the anti freeze coolant with new coolant after allowing the engine to cool down. I then started the engine, turned on the heater and added the Blue Devil product according to the directions. The car engine did stop smoking, however it has a miss. I replaced the sparkplugs, however the missing would not go away. I took the car to a mechinac and he said that two of the cylinders had low compression. He recommended replacing the head gasket. Since the engine is not leaking coolant and the engine is not overheating, but it has the missing. Any suggestions.

Mechanic says I need a cover gasket change on 2 gaskets….I do not have oil problems, overheating or other noticeable signs…no leakage on ground…can there still be a problem? I have a 2007 dodge mini van…

        • BlueDevil Pro on January 30, 2015 at 2:22 pm

          Molly-

It is still a possibility even though you do not visibly see any leakage onto the ground. It may be in the early stages and that is why there are no clear symptoms up to this point.

You could always have your Dodge checked out by a different mechanic for a second opinion.

Hey you guys. I have a 2003 audi a4 1.8t. And recently I had my vavle cover gasket fix. But now I have four miss fires and changing the spark plugs. When I rremoved the coil packs there was oil once again. Why Would the vavle cover be leaking again in two weeks??

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 15, 2014 at 3:40 pm

It is not common for the valve cover to start leaking so quickly after having it fixed. First, you may want to check with the dealer or mechanic that worked on your Audi to see if the work is warrantied. If it is not, BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak will work in stopping leaks from the valve cover gaskets. Feel free to contact our technical support team at 888.863.0426 with any further questions.

I have Honda Accord 2000 and it has leak on the valve cover and it was smoking a lil bit but not too much and it’s burning oil you think the valve cover is the caused of burning oil and smoking? Thanks

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 30, 2016 at 12:06 pm

          Kevin-

Yes, a leaking valve cover can sometimes leak onto your hot exhaust system and will cause some smoke and a possible burning smell. We recommend adding 1 bottle of BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/) to stop your oil loss. You can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

Hi I was just told that I have to have my valve cover gasket replaced because of a leak. This is the 3rd one I have had to replace in the past 4 years. First of all this seems very unusual, its like there is another problem that nobody seems to be finding. If I use your product do you think this will help. I have a 2009 ford focus. Thanks

            Maureen-

Thank you for asking about your Ford Focus. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended to revitalize and recondition rubber seals/gaskets. It would not have much effect on a newer rubber. Based on your description, we recommend getting a second opinion, as it does seem unusual to keep replacing the valve cover gasket multiple times in such a short span.

            Thank you!

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak will stop a valve cover leak. However, it sounds like the leak or leaks you are experiencing may be fairly substantial. It would not hurt to add a bottle of the Oil Stop Leak; if that doesn’t work then you may be looking at a hard part repair.

Hi, I’ve just been informed by the dealer service dept that my 2008 Mini Cooper has a Valve Cover Gasket Leak. Actually, they left me a msg stating the leak they found in April was still there; however, I didn’t own the car until May–meaning, they sold me a car with a known maintenance issue. Not amused.

The dealer obviously suggested replacing the part. However, rather than replacing it, your BlueDevil product sounds like it would do the trick. This a “stupid question”, as I am by no means a mechanic, but…where would I add this product, and is this something I could do on my own without mechanic tools?

-Just a girl who doesn’t want to get swindled (more) by the dealer

      Collene-

First off, we are sorry to hear that you are having to deal with an oil leak. Fortunately, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak will stop leaks coming from the valve cover gaskets. You will add the full 8 ounce bottle into your engine oil; it should be added directly through the cap where your oil is normally added.

The product can be purchased locally through a number of automotive parts stores such as: Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, O’Reilly Auto, NAPA, etc.

I have a similar problem. But my oil leak is very severe! I have a giant black oil spot in my driveway. When I’m driving, and I stop at a light, oil leaks on my exhaust and causes billows of smoke from all sides of my car! I have to put oil in every week. Also, my car misses. It is a 1997 Nissan Maxima, good car/engine. But I am afraid I’m gonna mess up the damage the engine if I don’t fix it soon. Any solutions? A novice car maintenance woman.

        • Martha on October 30, 2015 at 1:19 pm

I recently found out my car has s power steering leak as well, not sure how to fix that. Along with adding oil in my car weekly, I also add power steering fluid.

          • BlueDevil Pro on November 4, 2015 at 10:07 am

            Martha-

As long as you are not losing fluid too quickly, you would be able to use the BlueDevil Power Steering Stop Leak. Based on your previous post, it seems like the oil leak you are experiencing is more severe than the power steering leak, so we would recommend bringing the vehicle to an ASE certified mechanic to have the oil leak repaired first before trying to deal with your power steering leak. Thank you for asking about your Nissan Maxima. Based on your description, unfortunately, we would not recommend using BlueDevil in this situation. The product is intended for leaks that are seeping or dripping. It seems like you may be losing oil a little too quickly in order to get the benefit of the product. A hard part repair may be your best option at this point.

i have a 2006 audi a4 quatto, when iwas on the highway the car stopped and wouldnt turn back on, after that i got a new battery but still nothing , i open the hood and ny the head gasket or cover the metal piece was cracked and oiled leaked from there, how can i fix this and do i need a new engine ?

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 20, 2014 at 1:19 pm

      Mohammed,
Thanks for your question, and we’re sorry your Audi is giving you problems. It sounds like you have quite a few things going on. Without being able to see the damage it’s hard to give you an idea of the problem so it would definitely be worth taking your car to a mechanic. If your car shutting off on the highway is related to the cracked metal cover and oil leak you probably have a pretty major problem on your hands like a blown timing belt or chain. Hopefully they are unrelated and you simply need a new valve cover, gasket, and an oil change and your starting issue is indeed electrical. If your oil leak is due to a cracked valve cover unfortunately BlueDevil products won’t be able to help.

I just had a starter put in my car and the dealer is stating that my starter went out because of the valve cover gasket. I guess the oil is leaking on my starter. Is this true? The dealer states that if I don’t get the gasket fixed immediately then it could ruin my starter. Is this true?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 8, 2015 at 1:50 pm

      Latanya-

There is a very small possibility but it is unlikely. Starters are designed to be liquid tight so that they work in all weather conditions. As such, I wouldn’t think oil would penetrate the case any more than rain or other road chemicals thrown up onto the starter. With that said, the oil leak is costing you money in wasted oil and when mixed with road debris over a period of time can cause your engine to run warmer than it should.

For the oil leak, we recommend that you add a bottle of BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. It can be seen here: http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/

      Thank You,

I have a 2003 ford escape and recently took it in to a ford dealership for an oil change (its not under warranty or anything just near where I work.) They told me there was leak that they said is from the valve cover gasket. They gave me a lengthy list of repairs and damaged components due to this leak totaling $3400. (power steering pump, oil pan gasket, alternator, front timing gasket…)
I would like to know if its accurate or I’m getting jerked around. What could be damaged by a leak/crank case empty of oil?

Thanks for your question about your 2003 Ford Escape. I’m sorry you got such a high repair bill the last time you took it in. If your Escape was run low on oil it could have done a significant amount of internal damage to your engine, but none of the components you listed as needing repaired by the shop are internal engine components. Also, if those types of things were damaged your Escape would be making a lot of noise and probably running poorly.

If your valve cover gasket is leaking oil it will drip down over the rest of your engine and can make it difficult to identify any other leaks, such as your oil pan gasket and timing cover gasket. Our recommendation would be to seal your valve cover gasket leak either by replacing the gasket or using BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak as described in the article you read. Once the leak is sealed, use engine degreaser to remove the old oil that has leaked from the valve cover gasket and clean up your engine. Be careful around your alternator as you cannot get that wet or use degreaser on it. Once your engine is clean, you can look to see if any other gaskets are leaking.

Using BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak will seal the leaks you have coming from any of the gaskets so it should be a one-stop fix to all of your engine oil leaks. It is possible that the leaking oil damaged your alternator, however if this is the case you should have a battery light illuminated on your gauge cluster.

    Hello
I have 2004 Audi A4 V6 3.0 I had massive oil leak from valve cover area, even I replace the cover gasket but it was leaking and oil dropping over exhaust and smoked like crazy , So I googled oil leak and I came to this website , to be honest I thought it snake oil at first , I thought well I give it try, went to local auto zone and bought bottle and poured BlueDevil stop leak in the engine and ran it car for 1:30 idling , well I could not believe my eyes, I would say 95% was smoke was gone and no more leak, although the was still was very very small smoke was coming from rear on driver side engine. the instruction said it needs to run 1-2 hours, on massive leak it may take 2 days driving around to cure it, to be honest it was getting late at night and dark I only ran for 1:30 minutes, I am give it more time tomorrow, My question is this permeant ? also if the little small leak does goes away , can I put another bottle to cure it!!! Your product make believer of me !!! Thank you

I have a 98 lincoln continental and i believe i have a bad valve cover gasket. The engine smokes a little from the front valve cover and will overheat after about 20 minutes of driving. What could cause this to happen?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 6, 2015 at 2:33 pm

      Mack-

A valve cover leak would not normally cause a car to overheat unless the oil level has become extremely low. The symptom of overheating is normally more associated with something cooling system related; it could be a head gasket leak, water pump failure, a bad fan switch, etc.

You may want to take your vehicle into a certified shop or a Lincoln dealer to have it diagnosed.

      Thanks!

I just bought a 2014 Honda Crosstour and it only has 2,100 mile on it. My car was leaking oil and I was advised by the dealer that it is a valve cover gasket leak. they are repairing it but I am wondering if this may have ongoing issues? I am really worried about this brand new car having this issue. I was told that if was a defective part and all should be good after the repairs. what it your opinion?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 23, 2015 at 12:23 pm

      Teri-

If the repair is done properly then this should not become an ongoing issue. We recommend that you keep a close eye on it so that if the problem does come back you are able to take it back to the dealership to be warrantied.

      Thank You!

I was taking my 2004 jeep to a mechanic and I had to have a whole new transmission put in. As soon as I got it back It smelled like exhaust everytime I would drive it. It was really bad. The girl in our office took her car and her mothers car to the same mechanic. After he worked on both of her cars her and her mother smelled the same thing. I drove mine for awhile thinking it was something to do with the transmission from him working on it. I started have some smoke come out of the hood when I would drive it. So I took it to the auto dealer to check it out. He told me I really need 2 new Valve covers. That was the smell and the smoke problem. After talking with my about my jeep she said that was the same thing wrong with both of her cars. Interesting. Could that mechanic have done something to the valve covers so we would have to come back in?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 5, 2015 at 3:53 pm

      Pam,

Thanks for the question about the valve covers on your jeep and your co-worker’s cars. There would be no reason to touch the valve covers during a transmission replacement on a jeep. However, depending on how he removed the transmission, it is possible that the motor shifted enough that the valve covers rubbed on another component or the firewall of your jeep which could have loosened them enough to leak, but it certainly would have been accidental. There is really no way to sabotage a gasket, the only possibility would be if they loosened the bolts on the valve covers, that could cause a leak but could easily be checked and fixed by tightening the bolts again.

Hey guys I’ve a 05 maxima , my car is smoking after start up and also there is a big noise sounding in my engine before I ve change 2 valve cover but still adding oil every 3 days it’s seem like my engine is burning th oil cause my exhausts is black I took it to th shop and my mechanic told m th engine is dead which I don’t believe cause it still drivable after a add oil need help before any others expenses thanks

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 11, 2015 at 1:39 am

      Mike,

If your car is smoking and you’re having to add oil then it sounds like you are burning oil. Car’s usually burn oil either from leaking valve stem seals or worn piston rings. Fixing either of these problems requires disassembling a significant portion of the engine or rebuilding it entirely. Also the big noise you are describing could be many things but usually is a sign of a worn bearing somewhere in your engine. Worn bearings also usually necesitate an engine rebuild. It is possible that you can still get more miles out of your engine, but it sounds like significant repairs will be needed to stop the oil leaks and noise.

Unfortunately, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is not intended to work for a valve cap leak. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is specifically designed to stop oil loss coming from around any rubber seal or gasket.

I recently experienced fumes coming out of my vents and my SUV losing ant-freeze. I assumed it was the heater core and also I was experiencing some missing firing. So I took my 2001 Lincoln Navigator to the local shop to get my heater core replace and to change the coils that where misfiring. While the shop was changing the coils they notice that there was anti-freeze on the coils and told me that it was cause for the misfiring. The shop told me that my was head gasket is blown. I checked around for different options and a friend told me about the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go. I went to my local auto parts store and ask the clerk which size to use since I have V8 either white label or yellow label (the bigger bottle). He told me the yellow label is better than the white label, but the yellow requires you to be mechanically inclined. The clerk told me the white label will work too, so I purchased the white label. I went to do further research on the BlueDevil and notice that the white label is for use in 4 or 6 cylinder engines. Do BlueDevil Pour-N-Go (white label) work on V8 engines?

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 4, 2015 at 2:46 pm

      Gerald-

You may use either Head Gasket Sealer. The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (32 oz./yellow label) requires both the removal of thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.

The product with the yellow label will give you best overall results as long as you can remove the thermostat and flush the system prior to use. However, if the thermostat is difficult to remove or you would rather not then you can always use the “Pour N Go”. With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use. Based on your capacity, you will be using 32 ounces either way (if using Pour-N-Go you would need 2 full bottles).

Feel free to contact us at 888-863-0426 with any questions.

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 31, 2015 at 12:15 pm

      Varin,

Thanks for your question about your Acura TL. Based on your description it doesn’t sound like you have an oil leak as much as a faulty ignition coil. We would recommend replacing that ignition coil first.

If it is the seal around the ignition coil that is bad and it is oil burning on your exhaust manifold, then yes, BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/) will stop the leak.

      Thanks again for your question!

Hi I have a 95 Montero LS that I purchased a couple months back. The truck runs amazing, but I have a leak and I’m guessing that it is the valve cover gaskets. There is no oil under on the ground, but after I drive it and get out I can smell oil. There is signs of oil around the valve cover gaskets. But again no drips or puddles underneath. Will your product help? I would change them myself, but to many other parts to remove for me now since winter is here in Ct.

Thank you for the question about your Montero. We recommend adding 1 bottle of BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/) to help stop any leaks or seepage around your valve cover gaskets. Once the product is added you should start to notice results after about 100 miles of driving.

i have a 1992 btw 525i and i noticed the top of my engine cover by the cap is wet and looks like oil is on it. not a lot or any dripping to the ground. what could be the cause of this? i just changed my oil a month ago and my oil is already low again.

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 11, 2016 at 10:25 am

      Joseph,

Thanks for your question about your 525i. If the only oil you see is around your oil cap it could simply be that your oil cap was left a little bit loose when you had your last oil change done. If your oil cap is on tight, then the other possibility is that you have a leaky valve cover gasket. Try removing the top engine cover to see if you can find further evidence of a leak. If it is a gasket or seal leaking you can use BlueDevil Oil Stop leak (Available here: http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/) to seal the leak.

      Thanks again for your question!

Hi I have a 1979 Ford econoline and I had a friend replace the valve cover gaskets but they are still leaking quite a bit… sometimes when I come to a stop or press the break hard it will die… is my van dying realated to the leaking gaskets? Is there anything else in that area that could leak? Or could he have not gotten them on good?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 10, 2016 at 8:31 pm

      Julia,

Thanks for your question about your Ford Econoline. If your valve cover gaskets are still leaking even after they’ve been replaced then your valve covers may be warped from old age and you may consider replacing those as well.

It doesn’t seem likely that your van dying is related to the leaking valve cover gaskets. You might start with a regular tune up including new spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor and adjusting the carburetor. Since you mentioned it dying when you push the brakes you may have a vacuum leak that is causing the problem and a good place to start would be in the hose going from the intake to the brake booster.

      Thanks again for your question!

I have a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire that has had a problem with a small oil leak somewhere on the valve cover. It is just enough to occasionally get the burnt oil smoke smell while driving and then is gone. They replaced the seal about 9 months ago, but it started again. The car only has 43,000 miles on it, but this appears to be a common Crossfire issue.

Will Blue Devil seal this? Can I add it to synthetic oil? Will it harm the engine oil viscosity at all and harm the engine?

    Thank you

One more thing I forgot. Do I have to drain any of the oil out, or can I add Blue Devil with the oil level just about at the full mark?

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 2, 2017 at 10:20 am

Thank you for asking about your Chrysler Crossfire. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). The product is compatible and can be added with synthetic oil. The product does not contain any petroleum distillates, so it would not affect the oil viscosity. Also, it does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not adversely affect the engine or the system itself. One 8 oz. bottle will treat 4-6 quarts of oil. If you are at the full mark, you may want to allow for enough room to add the 8 oz. of the product.

Hi there. Is it okay to use both rear main sealer and oil stop leak at the same time? Thank you

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 15, 2019 at 10:21 am

      Chandler-

BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is more concentrated and is the universal application that will work for various leaks such as oil pan leaks, rear main leaks, valve cover gasket leaks, etc. Whereas the Rear Main Sealer is specifically formulated for only a leaking rear main seal. If you are not 100% sure where the vehicle is leaking or there seem to be multiple leaks then we recommend using BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. It is not necessary to add both products simultaneously.

I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata! I recently found out I had a valve gasket Leak. The HYUNDAI dealer told me to wait until my next oil change. But I Decided to take it early because when I accelerate my car/engine is making a rattling noise now. HELP WHAT IS GOING ON??

    • BD Auto Pro on June 25, 2019 at 9:22 pm

      Khadijah,

Thanks for your question about your 2015 Hyundai Sonata. Our guess would be that your valve cover gasket leak has caused a low oil level in your car. If your car has low oil the oil may have low pressure or be hotter than normal causing noise in your valves which could sound like ticking or rattling. It’s also possible the rattling noise is from another problem as rattling noises while accelerating are often due to loose heat shields on your exhaust. Our recommendation would be to fix the valve cover gasket leak and top off your oil to see if that fixes the rattling.

      Thanks again for your question!

We are adding a quart about every 300 miles. Do you think Blue Devil Oil Stop Leak could help us?

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 14, 2019 at 2:32 pm

We have a 2014 Chevy cruze lt 1.8. We recently noticed the valve cover hasket was leaking so we took it in to get fixed but at the same time there was a coolant leak and the mechanic couldn’t tell where it was coming from. Well its been 3 days since we took it and the valve cover is leaking again. My husband and I noticed coolant somewhere under the engine. What could this be? I was thinking maybe they didn’t follow torque specs for our vehicle? Or is it a head gasket issue?

Hello, I have a 1999 Lexus LS400. The car drives magnificently and is in excellent shape as I am the original owner. I don’t drive it much (maybe 200 or 300 miles a month). However, it has an external oil leak (slow leak). The leak is seeping or lightly dripping (I put a cardboard box under the car to monitor the leak daily). At times I see smoke from under the hood on the passenger side. And lastly, it has a burning smell of oil under the hood. I suspect it’s a valve cover gasket leak (2 for my car). Early last month I put a bottle of Lucas Engine Oil Stop Leak and the leak did not stop. Can I put a bottle of BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak and will BD work for my car’s issue?

I have a 2007 Mercedes SLK 350 roadster. I was told the valve covers are leaking – which I presume is the gaskets. They wanted $900.00 per side (it is a V6) or almost $2,000.00 to replace the gaskets. I also read somewhere that stop leak products can loosen debris or paint within the engine (?) and cause damage to the engine. Is this true or have you heard anything about this? It is time for an oil change and it would be an appropriate time to use your product. It is a very small leak but drips on the exhaust.

The stop leak worked for about 2 days and the smoke/ steam started coming out again from the engine.
At this point I don’t know what to do, should I buy another stop leak or what.
    I need help.

      Lawrence-

How quickly are you losing oil? Based on your description, a second application may be recommended. Please contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 so that we can get a little better understanding of the vehicle’s condition and be able to make any appropriate recommendations.

      Thank you!

I have Mercedes 2006 E350 which has developed a slow drip onto the passenger side exhaust header, and smokes a little. Put the oil stop in yesterday. Ran this for about 50 minutes today on the highway, when will this leak stop take effect, and do I need to just run in idle, is there a difference?

      Kirk-

Thank you for asking about your Mercedes. Typically with the Oil Stop Leak, it will take around 100-200 miles of driving before you start to see improvement. Depending on the size of the leak, it could take up to around 300 miles of driving before you see the full benefit of the product.

      Thank you!

I have a 2009 X5 with 220k miles. I just poured this in, hoping to stop the messy leak that I am told is from my valve cover gasket. I think it gets worse in cold temperatures, maybe due to the rubber shrinking in the gaskets? Does it matter if I pour this in when it is cold or warm outside? Will it repair the gasket either way if it is shrunk or expanded from the weather

      Jim-

Thank you for asking about your BMW. It would not matter adding the product when the weather is hot or cold. The product works by revitalizing and reconditioning shrunken/deteriorated rubber seals and gaskets. You should expect to start seeing results after 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

Thank you for asking about your Honda Accord. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. The Oil Stop Leak is a universal application and will work for various leaks such as, oil pan gasket, valve cover seal, rear main seal, etc. If you’re not 100% sure where the leak is coming from, the Oil Stop Leak would be your best bet.

      Thank you!

Hello i have a chrysler 300c always leaking alot of oil. The mechanic said oil is leaking from the rocker cover and head gasket and it would cost alot to repair. Can you advise if i can use the blue devil oil stop leak and the head gasket sealer too?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 23, 2023 at 8:42 am

      J-

Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop a head gasket from leaking oil. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is only intended for water/coolant leaks, and the Oil Stop Leak is specifically intended to treat rubber seals/gaskets. A hard part repair may be your best option.

      Thank you!

Will this work for a cylinder cover gasket seal leak?

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 13, 2023 at 8:27 am

      Javie-

As long as you aren’t losing oil too quickly, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak would be able to treat a leaking valve cover gasket. You should expect to start seeing results after 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

Will it fix the leak coming from the bottom of my valve cover. There’s a small leak at the bottom where the bolt hole is.

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 18, 2024 at 9:43 am

      Zack-

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is specifically intended to treat rubber seals/gaskets. Unfortunately, it would not work on the area you’ve described. A hard part repair may be your best option.

      Thank you!
