Repairing Your Cracked Engine Block

#driveyourlife

Having a cracked engine block can feel like the end of your vehicle’s life.  Engine swaps can be extremely expensive and often not worth the investment in your current vehicle.  Also, having a cracked block is one of those extreme cases where it may not be possible to salvage your current engine.

Why is fixing a cracked engine block difficult?

There are many who have attempted to repair cracked blocks.  The main difficult is that you cannot simply weld an engine block since it is made from cast iron, not steel.  It is possible to weld cast iron using an arc welder and the proper welding rods, but that often can cause deformation to your engine block, or leave the welded area far more brittle and susceptible to further cracking.  The other common attempt at fixing a cracked block is called cold metal stitching.  This process is similar to sewing two pieces of fabric together, except it is far more difficult with metal.  The main difficulty with this process is that it does not work well on components that experience drastic temperature changes as the temperature change causes swelling and shrinking of the metal which will cause the metal stitching to tear and the crack to reopen.  This process is also often prohibitively expensive and only used on very large or expensive motors such as heavy equipment, diesel engines or marine motors.

There have been a variety of other attempts at sealing cracked engine blocks like using cold welding products, 2 part epoxies or a variety of other patches and fixes.  The problem in most cases is the same as with cold metal stitching in that the wide range of operating temperatures in your vehicle’s motor along with the thermal expansion of the metal cause most repairs to only last for a short time.

Before you attempt any repair on your cracked engine block, you want to be sure that is the problem you have.  If you have an external crack in your block that you can see, then the problem is easily identified.  If you have an internal crack the symptoms can often be similar to that of a blown head gasket.

Is there an easy way to fix it?

The best way to seal a cracked block is to use BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer.  BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer is a specially formulated sealing agent that you add to your vehicle’s cooling system.  BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer can seal your cracked block from the inside out through your vehicle’s cooling system.  It is not a fibrous or particulate sealer that can harm or clog any other areas of your cooling system.  Instead, BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer has a special chemical formula that will bond to the metal in your engine block at the leak point until the leak is completely sealed.  The chemical weld formed by BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer will create a seal that can expand and contract with the temperature changes in your engine.  Since there is nothing harmful in BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer it can stay in your cooling system indefinitely, sealing any future leaks your may have in your vehicle’s radiator or engine block.

BlueDevil Products can be found on Amazon.com or at AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, O’Reilly Auto Parts, NAPA, and other major auto parts retailers.

I used Blue Devil, on an 84 Buick 5.7 Diesel Engine that had either a cracked block or a blown head gasket, and it worked very well. Sealed the leak successfully and was very happy with the product. Company Technicians were very helpful and very interested in solving my problem. Wished I still had that vehicle, as it was an Estate Wagon, pretty rare with the Diesel engine !!

As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 45 minutes, without overheating or stalling out, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 45 minutes, you would be a great candidate for the BlueDevil Radiator & Block Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/radiator-block-sealer-00205/).

Would I have to put a water hose in the radiator to make sure there is water in the cooling system? I have a 81 El Camino with a cracked block… no water in the oil…

Yes, you would want to have either water or antifreeze in the system when applying BlueDevil.

How do I run this in an inboard boat engine

          • BlueDevil Pro on May 9, 2018 at 8:34 am

            Jason-

The key of the BlueDevil working is that you are able to circulate the same body of water for the recommended 50 minute idle; on a marine engine you could use a bucket or barrel to accomplish this. The other necessity is that the water will heat to at least 150 degrees during that run. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

Thank you for asking about your Ford F-250. Based on your description, it sounds as though you are losing water just as quickly as you add it. Hi. I drive a 2003 Honda Civic. It has been reconditioned @ cost of $12,000 CA. Now I have been told there’s an internal crack in the engine block (by crank sensor). How can Blue Devil’s Radiator & Block Sealer work through the rad to fix an area where oil drips from? And I’m very concerned about what particles may be running through the system. You guarantee there will be no damage. Sure?

      • BlueDevil Pro on August 2, 2018 at 8:47 am

Thank you for asking about your Honda Civic. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop oil dripping from the block. The BlueDevil Radiator & Block Sealer is only intend for water/coolant leaks, specifically, an external seep or a light drip coming from the radiator or block. Based on your description, a hard part repair may be your best option.

I have a 2007 odyssey with 148,000 miles it s been giving me multiples misfire took it to a specialist and they yold me that cylinder 5 is low presure it evaporates my coolant and its smells like coolant wen is warm they said i need to replace the motor it will be spencive

        • BlueDevil Pro on November 7, 2016 at 4:06 pm

          Agustin-

Thank you for asking about your Honda Oddyssey. It is also possible that you are getting combustion/exhaust gases pumping back into the cooling system.  You can use a “Block Dye Tester” to confirm whether or not that is the case.
BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will still work if your vehicle is getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure.  To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading.  If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull.  Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly.  Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system.

          Thank you!

I used bars stop leak for a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. It fixed the water coming out of tail pipe and there is no water in the oil. However the car is losing compression and has a miss. Do you think this is a cracked cylinder and do you think your product can fix this ??

        • BD Auto Pro on September 28, 2016 at 6:12 pm

          Larry,

Thanks for your question about your leak. Even if you do not have coolant in the oil or out of the exhaust you may still have a small coolant leak either from a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. If you had water in your oil you could be losing compression due to corrosion of the cylinder walls or cylinder rings as well as a crack in your head, block or a partially blown head gasket. Unfortunately, to confirm any of these things you would have to tear down your engine to check.

          Thanks again for your question!

What does the guarantee cover? I have a cracked block for sure. It is located right under the intake manifold where the lifters are on a 350 sbc. It is allowing coolant to mix with my oil. I’ll have to buy upper gasket set if I use this block including new head gaskets. Will the guarantee cover all my part costs? The labor I do myself.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 20, 2015 at 11:12 am

Yes, it will work in a 2 stroke engine. Be sure to follow the capacity chart as you will not need a whole lot to treat a cooling system of that size.

Can this product seal an engine with a hole?

        • BlueDevil Pro on August 10, 2016 at 3:09 pm

          Maddness-

As long as the vehicle will not lose more than about 1 quart of water during a 45 minute idle then there is a very good chance the BlueDevil Radiator & Block Sealer will be able to seal it. If you are losing more than that then your vehicle will require a hard part repair.

          Thank you!

I was wondering that if you use the blue devil and it seals it,does it allow you to drive far distances without it messing up again or no?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 23, 2015 at 11:45 am

      Erika-

Once BlueDevil creates a seal it is permanent. There is no restriction on speed or distance; neither would affect the quality of the seal.

Yes, the BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer would be able to help seal the leak in your Chrysler. The product is attracted to airflow. once it is introduced to the system, it will look for the temperature differentials in the system and react with heat to form a chemical weld. Hi I have twin Mercruisers I/O’s with GM 305’s on my boat with cracked blocks on the inboard side of each block. It is a fresh water boat, however there is rust residue coming from the cracked areas (which we would expect).
    1) Will the rust reside affect your products ability to seal?
    2) Do you have any solutions for circulating your product on mercruiser I/O Stern Drives ?

    Thanks

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 10, 2015 at 10:20 am

      Jim-

Yes, the rust residue could potentially affect the BlueDevil’s ability to seal.

We have had customers use the product in marine engines by circulating the same water in a barrel or bucket. The main components you will need are circulation of the same body of water (3 – 4 gallons preferably) and heat.

Feel free to contact our tech support team at 888-863-0426 with any further questions.

Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). The product would treat blown head gaskets as well as a crack in the block. Does the system use a water pump to circulate water? Hi Jim I also have an I/O with a cracked block just wondering if you have tried to seal it and how it worked? Thanks

  11. JD on July 6, 2015 at 7:39 pm

my car was always over heating.. I thought it was the water pump cause water was leaking out of the bottom. We replaced that and the thermostat. We took it for a ride it it lose power, shared and heVy white smoke and water came out the exhaust… We were told it’s a blown head gasket. We bought the blue devil. Took it for a drive again, the smoke & shaking went away.. But it still over heats. I don’t know what else is wrong.

  12. Chris on July 9, 2015 at 2:56 pm

If I use this product for en exterior cracked block will this prevent me from doing any future work to the motor? Someone told me after using this they were unable to remove the head without harming the head itself. It’s a 1952.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 10, 2015 at 10:22 am

      Chris-

Use of the BlueDevil product would not change the difficulty of making any future repairs. The product is attracted to airflow and reacts to temperature differential to create a chemical weld; therefore the seal created by BlueDevil will only show up at the point of any leak.

      Thanks!

Will blue devil seal a crack in a 305 inboard/outboard about 4 to 5 inches long if we circulate the same water or is that too long of a crack?

          • BlueDevil Pro on August 4, 2015 at 10:37 am

            Echo-

It really depends how quickly you are losing coolant. In general, BlueDevil will have a great shot at working as long as you will not lose more than about 1 quart of water during a 50 minute idle.

You will definitely want to circulate the same water if you decide to use BlueDevil to ensure proper results. Feel free to contact our tech support team at 888-863-0426 with any questions.

I have a1930 model a with 2″ hairline crack in the blocks exterior . My concern is will this clog my radiator. A friend used bars and it clogged his radiator . Model a engines are an open system not under pressure . Would that make a differance ?

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 23, 2015 at 4:41 pm

      Tom,

Thanks for your question about your Model A. The low pressure of an open system won’t make a difference as it is the temperature differential at the leak that activates BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer. Similarly, BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer won’t clog your radiator as the temperature differentials there aren’t great enough to activate the sealing agent.

      Thanks for your question!

Thanks for your question about your Case backhoe. As long as the location with the crack is in a coolant passage BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer is guaranteed to seal your leak and get your backhoe running again. If the 2 cylinders do not have a water jacket between them then unfortunately you will need to have your block welded and machined.

Thank you for your question about your Saturn. Unfortunately, BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is not designed to stop oil from entering the cooling system or oil being lost from the head gasket. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is specifically made to stop coolant loss. We do not manufacture any products that will remedy the symptoms that your Saturn is experiencing. Your only option may be a hard part repair.

      Thanks!

Can Blue Devil Head Gasket Repair Be Used In A Vehicle That Has No Heat Or A/C? I Have A ’93 F-150 With A 302 & I Think It Has A Blown Head Gasket.

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 14, 2016 at 9:48 am

      Michael-

Thank you for asking about your Ford F-150. You can use the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer without the use of your heat or a/c. The direction about putting your heater on with the blower to the max is to draw heat from the engine, to keep it from overheating during that 50 minute idle. As long as the vehicle isn’t going to overheat, you should still be able to see some good results from the product.

      Thank you!

I have a small JD lawnmower with a Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel motor. It appears that there may be an internal crack in the block/head that is allowing coolant to fill the oil pan. Is this a scenario where one of your products may be useful in repairing the internal crack? Thanks in advance!

Is the Blue Devil oil sealer safe for my 1974 VW Bus with a 1.8 L aircooled engine? The oil leaks are minor

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 23, 2016 at 11:22 am

      Gregory-

Yes, it is 100% safe to use BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak in your 1974 VW Bus. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is designed to recondition, rejuvenate, and slightly expand any leaking rubber seal or gasket. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is not designed to work for a cracked block or leaking hard part.

Once the product is added you can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

I have a 2005 Chevy Duramax diesel with blown head gasket or cracked block. Coolant system is getting pressurized from combustion, if I relieved the pressure in the coolant side manually by teeing in to the heater core piping, do you think I could relieve the pressure enough during the process to allow product to make a bond?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 1, 2016 at 8:46 am

      Daniel-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Duramax. Relieving the pressure building up in the cooling system will give you better ciculation and hopefully help the vehicle from overheating during the 50 minute idle. A clean, free-flowing system, would be the best environment for the product, and in doing so, would give the Head Gasket Sealer the best possible chance of working properly. I would like to know if this worked for you. I have a similar issue with an lb7 with suspected cup seal leaks, and looking for a temporary fix till i can tear it apart

  41. Frank Craig on April 25, 2016 at 2:21 pm

I recently purchased a sailboat which has a Yanmar 4HJ3-TE (four cylinder) marine diesel engine. The boat was cheap because though supposedly they had re done the head once they reassembled the motor coolant fluid leaked into the last three cylinders.

    There are three possibilities.

    1. The cylinder is cracked and coolant is flowing into the cylinders (which I assume should not be the case as this would mean three different cracks, one for each cylinder).

    2. The exhaust manifold is water cooled and could have a crack in it.

    3. The head has a crack

    4. This one would not apply, the motor was badly assembled, in this case its not your problem.

From what I have read from your site a crack in the cylinders should seal, but would your product seal a crack in the head or the water cooled exhaust manifold?

I am not quite sure what is wrong yet, either my head gasket is blown and/or there is a crack in the block, however I am not losing coolant, but I do seem to be losing oil. Will this work in this situation? And can Radiator and Block Sealer work in a turbocharged application?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 24, 2016 at 2:37 pm

The BlueDevil Radiator and Block Sealer is only intended for water/coolant leaks. Based on your description, unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product for the type of leak you are experiencing. A hard part repair may be your best option.

I have a Ford Y Block that someone let freeze with water in it. It has a crack at the back of the block under the bell housing area. This area has no combustion pressure on it, and is away from high stress fasting points. The crack was narrow about 5″ long, varying from 1/32 to 1/16, after a bad weld repair was ground away. The repair was filled with high temp epoxy, but still leaks about 1/4 cup of antifreeze a month.

The car has Evans Waterless coolant, which is excellent, but finds small leaks. Do you believe your sealer will be able to stop the leak without clogging my new radiator and heater core?

From what I am reading this will help. My uncle mentioned that it was overheating so would this seal before overheating and filling the oil with water?

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 25, 2016 at 3:16 pm

It really depends on how quickly the engine is wanting to overheat. BlueDevil Radiator & Block Sealer requires that the engine is able to idle for a solid 45 minute period without stalling out or overheating. If it is able to run 45 minutes without overheating then you should have no problem sealing the leak.

Will it fix a cracked head in a 2.3 liter 4’cylinder?

  52. Derek on November 20, 2016 at 6:24 pm

    Hello, Hello,
My Name is Derek, I am from Nome Alaska. I have a 1991 Ford explorer. It shows roughly 75,XXX miles on it. Of course it resets after a 100,000. Anyways I bought this car this summer and i put about 6,000 miles on it, and the clutch went out, so i replaced it. After that the car started burning coolant out the exhaust, like a lot. So I stripped the car down to the block to check the head gaskets and realized the passenger side gasket was blown, and I replaced the driver side head cylinder. I didnt replace the passenger side. I should have replaced both sides at the time but just the driver side. Anyways after replacing gaskets and driver side cylinder the same problem happened within two weeks or so. So yesterday i finally had time to strip it down and took both heads off and the new head is fine, the passenger side head tho is cracked between the exhaust valves and they are leaking so I ordered a new head for the passenger side. but once back together and if i have the same problem i swear it would be internally on the engine block which i am afraid of it might be. Would this product work if the leak is internally on my engine block?!? Please let me know. Thank you

      Derek-

Thank you for asking about your Ford Explorer. Yes, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/ would be able to seal an internal engine block leak. I have a 93 Honda Civic EX 1.6 and when beginning to replace the water-pump noticed that the valve cover was milky and there was already white smoke coming from the tailpipe so under the assumption that I have a blown head gasket I have bought the 16 ounce bottle of head gasket repair and a 16 oz bottle of radiator and block sealer. I’m wondering if 16oz is going to be enough for this size engine? Should I use both bottles if 32oz is what my motor calls for.also I’m having a problem with the Car idling so I’m not exactly sure that it’s going to be able to idle for 50 minutes without me pressing the gas to help it. What do you recommend that I do to help it stay at a normal idle. I read in someone’s comment that removing one of the spark plugs that may be dirty or have milky residue on it can help keep the vehicle at a normal idle but it is very detrimental that I get this leak ,crack or blown gasket repaired ASAP and I also need to know if using seafoam in my engine is necessary or recommended with blue devil, if so should I use them both at the same time or in which order and how far between each treatment? I am at work and have to put this Blue Devil in so that I can hopefully make it home today. Is the fact that I cannot change my oil prior to using Blue Devil going to make a difference in the ending results being good. Once I complete the Blue Devil treatment how long should I wait before I change my oil and should I repeat the Blue Devil treatment with the new oil or should I try radiator and block sealer with the next Oil Change?

2010 Buick LaCrosse w/ 140,000 miles. I have a coolant smell after vehicle has been driven. Just had the water pump changed and thought it was leftover coolant burning off. After 2 weeks I still smelled coolant (nothing is on the garage floor) so I took it back into the dealer. They said the coolant was very low and found that I have a porous block. Solution is to replace the engine. Obviously, I don’t really want to do that due to the cost. They didn’t say anything about a crack in the block, just that it is porous. Have you had customers with similar issues have success with your product? Or is a porous block mean that eventually there will be ultimate failure, even after using your product?

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 18, 2017 at 10:02 am

      John-

Thank you for asking about your Ford 6.0L. As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that span, you would be a great candidate for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). The product is compatible to use on diesel engines. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

I have a 2002 accord that is leaking oil into the coolant reservoir. The radiator is filled with brown sludge, but mechanic says my head gasket is still good. He thinks the engine block has a porous leak as is common on these accords. If I do a thorough chemical radiator flush and then use this product, should I expect it to seal the leak?

I have a 04 GMC, 80000 miles with a 6.0 The block is rusted and flaking up behind the starter so coolant is weeping out but not enough to pool under the truck. My mechanic has already tried Bar copper block sealer that hasn’t worked. Thank you for asking about your GMC. Being that you have already added a sealer to the system, we recommend thoroughly flushing the cooling system, prior to adding BlueDevil. BlueDevil does not contain any solid or particulate matter, so it does not have some of the clogging or restricting tendencies that other products may have. sir, what would be the best blue devil product for a cracked block between two cylinders 93 suzuki 4 cyl. aluminum block

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 8, 2018 at 10:16 am

      Larry-

How quickly is it losing water/coolant? Is the vehicle overheating at all? You may use either of the two Head Gasket Sealers that we manufacture. The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (32 oz./yellow label) requires both the removal of thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.
The product with the yellow label will give you best overall results as long as you can remove the thermostat and flush the system prior to use. With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use.

      Thank you!

Hello, I have a 2007 honda civic lx with 70K on it. I purchased it used less than a year ago. The other morning I notice coolant fluid on the ground.Drove it to get checked out and they discovered a hairline cracked toward the front of the engine block. This is a known manufacturers defect but my car is out of the ext. warranty period. Blue Devil radiator n block pour n go was suggested as a possible fix or temporary fix. I did use it and it seemed to lessen the leak but not stop it completely. The car ran for over 300 miles with no overheating but their is still a slower leak. Is a second bottle of Blue Devil radiator & block pour n go recommended or can a second bottle do more harm than good?

I have a sbc 400 that has a small crack in the cylinder head combustion chamber. That goes from the intake valbe to the outer edge of the combustion chamber. Will blue devil work for this? It is caisin pressure in the radiator

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 6, 2018 at 9:37 am

      Thomas-

As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minute run, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would be able to seal that kind of leak. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the lowest compression reading.

      Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 27, 2018 at 9:31 am

      Alex-

Unfortunately, we do not recommend utilizing the product in the way you have described. It is intended to be added to a complete system and continuously circulate. The product itself is attracted to airflow and will react with heat to form a chemical weld.

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 3, 2019 at 10:19 am

The BlueDevil Radiator & Block Sealer is attracted to air flow and works by looking for the temperature differentials in the system. If you patch the leak, the product may not be able to find the leak point. Have a Ford 555 , 3- cylinder backhoe. Small crack in head. Small amounts of water getting in oil. Seeing tiny plumes of oil floating up into radiator, along with occasional air bubbles. Tractor runs excellent and shouldn’t be a problem to run it idle for required time.
Once directions are filled. If desired results are acquired, do I leave blue devil sealer in system? Do I add required coolants to system?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 20, 2019 at 3:49 pm

      William-

Once directions are filled, if desired results are acquired, it would not be necessary to leave BlueDevil in the system. The product only reacts to heat one time (one heat cycle). After the procedure is complete, the product will not continue to react or continue to seal, so you are not getting any additional benefit by leaving it in the system. You would want to get your regular 50/50 mix back in there. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

I have a 1983 Isuzu P’up with the C223 2.2L diesel. I just rebuilt this engine after my friend overheated it about 11 years ago, and I was unaware of the either the cracked block or cracked head at the time, as I just now got through replacing the head gasket with less than 100 miles on the fresh rebuild, as the water drains from the cooling system in amount, within 6 minutes, from a full-in-the-neck of the radiator with water, to being able to see the top of the core inside of the radiator after the water has run out. Will this product seal both block and head, as in the cracks in either? I have a replacement engine coming, but after doing all of this work, I want to drive it and I don’t want to have to wait for winter weather to work on it again because of where I live. The temperatures here are very extreme in the summer.

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 9, 2021 at 9:14 am

Thank you for asking about your Isuzu. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is intended for leaks that are seeping or lightly dripping. Based on your description, it sounds as though you are losing water a little too quickly for the product to be successful. In order to get the benefit of using the product, the vehicle would need to be able to idle for a full minutes, and you shouldn’t be losing more than about a quart of water during that 50-minute run.
