How to Fix an Oil Leak

#driveyourlife

how to fix an oil leakOil leaks in your car or truck can often go unnoticed.  Unless you like to regularly look under the hood, or crawl under your car, oil leaks can often sneak up on you.  For most of us, we notice an oil leak when we start to smell it burning or we start to see puddles under our vehicle after it has been parked for a while.  The problem is, once you’ve got a leak that is causing drips or puddles, you have a pretty serious problem.

If you do your own maintenance or oil changes then you probably spend enough time under the hood to catch oil leaks before they get to be a real problem.  If you have a trusted mechanic that does your work for you, hopefully they are doing a quick inspection every time you have your car in with them to make sure you don’t have any leaks starting.  Even if you trust your mechanic it might be worth taking a quick look around your car every time you get the oil changed.

The best way to do an inspection for oil leaks is to do one from the top and one from the bottom of your engine.  Start by popping the hood and taking a look around.  If you have a newer car, chances are there is some plastic covers you’ll have to remove to see everything you need to see.  Make sure you look around the top of your engine and just below the valve covers.  You should also check around the front of your engine, near the pulleys and the timing cover if your engine has one.  Next, secure your vehicle well, then crawl underneath and look for more leaks.  Start by looking as low as you can on your vehicle for drops, leaks or shiny spots where oil has been leaking.  If you find a leak, go up from there to find the gasket or seal the oil is coming from.

In doing these regular inspections, you can help catch an oil leak before it becomes a problem and starts leaving puddles on your driveway.  Once you’ve found the leak, the next step is to figure out how to fix an oil leak.  You have an oil leak because there are different components in your engine that needs to be bolted together and shafts that need to exit the engine block.  Each shaft, like your crankshaft or cam shaft, has an oil seal around it, and each component that is attached has a gasket on it to seal the oil inside your engine.  As shafts spin, components shift, and temperatures swing from below freezing to hundreds of degrees, these seals and gaskets can start to deteriorate, crack, shift, or tear.  These problems can allow oil to start to leak.  Usually, this is a slow process and the leak starts out as a seep that can be caught during your inspections.

One of the ways you can fix an oil leak is by replacing the worn out seal or broken gasket.  When it comes to replacing gaskets, you have to start by unbolting the two components the gasket is in between.  To replace a seal, you often times have to remove a significant amount of other equipment like timing gears or pulleys.  Replacing these worn seals or gaskets can often times require a significant amount of time and energy even though the parts themselves are relatively inexpensive.  Many mechanics will put in a new seal or gasket any time they are doing work in that area of your engine just because it is so much work to do later.

A second way to fix an oil leak is to use BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak.  Simply add BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak to your engine oil and it will seal you leaks from the inside out.  BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak isn’t a particulate sealant and will not clog or harm anything in your engine.  Instead, it is a liquid seal and gasket conditioner that mixes with your engine oil and will help bring your old seals and gaskets back to their original size and shape sealing the leak in your motor and getting your car back to working like new.

Hello i have a Honda 2015 civic and I have a leak will it slow it down until I can go to a mechanic

        • BlueDevil Pro on September 8, 2017 at 9:27 am

          Jorge-

Thank you for asking about your Honda Civic. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is the universal application that will work for oil pan leaks, rear main leaks, valve seal leaks, etc. The Oil Stop Leak is also the more concentrated of the 2 products. Whereas BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer is specifically formulated for the rear main seal. If you are not sure where the vehicle is leaking or there seem to be multiple leaks, we would recommend using BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak.

          Thank you!

Will it work on cam tower leaks on Toyota tundra? It looks like it is a silicone seal? For sure it is not a black rubber seal.

          • BlueDevil Pro on July 24, 2023 at 9:00 am

            Brian-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Tundra. Unfortunately, the Oil Stop Leak is only intended for rubber seals/gaskets. Replacing the seal may be your best option.

      • jairo on October 14, 2017 at 6:16 pm

do i have to put it in every time i change the oil? will it hurt my engine if i use 2 bottles?

        • BlueDevil Pro on October 16, 2017 at 9:35 am

          Jairo-

Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal, so you would not have to add the product with every oil change. Also, it is not one of those things where more of the product would be better. You really only want to use the recommended amount per application. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

          Thank you!

Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (https://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). As long as you are not losing oil too quickly, you would be a great candidate for the product. You should expect to see results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

        • BlueDevil Pro on July 11, 2019 at 2:01 pm

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is only intended for water/coolant leaks. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop oil from getting into the coolant. A hard part repair may be your best option.

Hello, I live in Brazil, so I can not buy your products easily. Last time I visited USA, I bought your transmission sealer and had good results on my Ford F100 C6 transmission. I now have a small rear axle leak at the back wheels. I know I should use the Oil stop leak, but as I can not find it here and I still have a closed bottle of transmission sealer, do you think i should try to put it in my differential? I use SAE 90 oil in it. Thanks.

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 5, 2015 at 8:20 am

      Salvador-

Yes, you can use the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to seal the leak from your differential. You only need to use about 1 ounce of BlueDevil per 1 quart of capacity; you most likely will only need a few ounces total.

      Thank You!

Your post gives some very useful information on fixing oil leakage. I was not aware of most of the facts mentioned in this post. Thanks for sharing useful information.

  4. Jeff on September 15, 2015 at 9:07 pm

When using your oil sealer with a car that is full of oil do I need to remove some oil to add your product so it’s not over full?

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 16, 2015 at 3:06 pm

      Jeff-

Yes, you will want to make sure you have enough room for the product. You are only using one oz of the product per quart of oil in the system, so you shouldn’t have to drain much, if any.

      Thank you!

I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado. I just put a bottle of blue devil oil stop leak. But my truck needs an oil change any day now, maybe I should have waited to put it after. How long should I wait before doing the oil change?

        • BlueDevil Pro on January 27, 2021 at 9:03 am

          Enrique-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Silverado. If you were due for a change within the next 300 miles or so, we would have recommended changing the oil first and adding the product at that point. Typically, it will take around 100-200 miles of driving before you start to notice improvement. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

Unfortunately, we do not manufacture any products that are designed to stop oil loss coming from the head gasket. Our BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is made to stop leakage from any rubber seal/gasket such as an oil pan gasket, rear main seal, or valve cover gasket.

I had an oil leak coming from one corner/bolt on my oil pan. I replaced the oil pan gasket two days ago. Oil is still leaking from the same location. My wife’s 2009 Chrysler Town and Country has developed a small leak from the oil pan seal. The Chrysler T&C does not have a gasket and came from the factory with only RTV sealant. I did a repair a few years ago which required the removal of the oil pan and I made a new seal using black RTV which is now leaking. Will this stop leak product work on a black RTV seal or is it only effective on rubber gasket seals?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 28, 2016 at 9:17 am

      Jason-

Thank you for asking about your wife’s Chrysler Town & Country. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is only intended for the rubber seals/gaskets in the system. Based on your description, unfortunately, either re-using the RTV seal or a hard part repair would be your best option.

Will this product seal a worn piston ring? I put a bottle in my crank case and let it idle for about 2.5 hrs at 2k rpms and it is still smoking and burned through about 3/4 a quart of oil. Maybe the rings are just to damaged?

I bought the Blue Devil Rear Main Sealer put it in my oil. That was about 1 month ago. I drove around with it almost every day, but only short trips of about 5-10 miles.
A few days ago I brought my car in for service and they did an oil change.

My question is, should I put another bottle of the sealer back in or is it ok to leave it like this with only the new oil inside the engine?
I’m just thinking if the stop leak sealer had enough time to do its work because it was only 1 month ago and with short trips.

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 21, 2016 at 9:57 am

      Bryan-

Typically with the BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer, you would start to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving. If my vehicle had an oil leak and I put you product into it to stop the leaks and it does stop the leaks is there a chance if my vehicle overheats that it will make your product not work and my leaks start to leak again? If that makes any sense

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 30, 2017 at 8:57 am

          Chase-

If your vehicle is overheating, typically that would be something that is cooling system related and would not have any influence on the fluid oil system. Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

Hi . I bought a Nissan Atlas 3.2 l recently for a bargain price , for the reason that its was leaking too much oil under the car . I ve tried all possible products they sell in gas stations , for oil leak stops such as Wynns stop leak , STP stop leak ,STP oil treatment , and manu more , but nothing worked. In a recent trip i went i needed to replace all time the oil in the engine (25 ltrs) only in one day (100 euro just for oil and a lot lot of stress) ..!! Yesterday i realised that one shop sells Bluedevil in my city and i bought the bluedevil stop leak and poored it the same time in the engine.. i drove until now maybe 25-30 km and i think leaked very little oil. . If today is not leaking that much .. then you saved me!! I ll tell you soon

  23. Adam Derek Jones on January 6, 2017 at 4:32 am

I was wondering if the leak is so significant that you don’t think. Driving it 100 miles would be safe….. Can I just add oil and leave in gear or what do you suggest? Thanks for your time…..

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 6, 2017 at 11:01 am

      Adam-

You can top the system off with oil as needed, however, if you are losing oil too quickly, you would more than likely be losing the product just as quickly, so you wouldn’t be able to keep it in the system long enough in order to get the benefit of using the product. The vehicle would need to be driven in order to see proper results.

      Thank you!

  24. Milk on January 9, 2017 at 6:45 pm

So u recommend if losing oil to quickly dont use it got a leak on my timing chain gasket coming pretty steady.

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 10, 2017 at 9:49 am

      Milk-

If you are losing oil to the extent that you would be losing your oil capacity before the product was able to seal, you wouldn’t be able to keep the product in the system long enough in order to get the benefit of using it. Typically, you would see improvement after about 100-200 miles of driving. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

You would be able to use either the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak or the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer for your transfer case leak. The Oil Stop Leak is a universal application and would treat any rubber seal/gasket. Either way, you will be using one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system. Thank you for asking about your Mercedes e240 and your Kawasaki Versys. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer, which you can order directly on our website(http://store.gobdp.com/products/). With both vehicles, you would want to change the oil before and after the BlueDevil process. Be sure to follow the cooling system capacity table on the back of the bottle to ensure the correct amount of product is used in your installations.

I just purchased a 2004 Nissan 350z with only 115,000 miles . It has leaky valve covers and also I know that some of the spark plug tube seals are leaking . The number# 5 solenoid going to the plug was oil fowled out . I am told the way these seals are made in to the valve cover ya have to replace the valve cover which is quite expensive not mentioning all the work involved . I hope your “Blue Devil Oil Stop Leak” product will work . Also is it best to change oil before using product ? The oil looks fairly clean… Also is it best to drive highway non stop for a few hours or better to use city stop & go at red lights ? Is it best to do at one time drive or over several days …. My gut feeling says it’s best to do all at once and take a long drive to the beach & back which is 1hr 20 minuets each way on the coastal route hwy. 98 to St. George Island …

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 1, 2017 at 8:59 am

      George-

Thank you for asking about your Nissan 350z. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/) for your valve cover leak. Unless you are due for an oil change within the next 300 miles or so, you would be fine to add the product to your existing oil and the product can stay in the oil for the life of the oil. You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving. It does not have to be a continuous drive, however, that would give you the quickest results. I found out I have a very small leak from the valve cover gasket in my car. I can’t afford the costly repair at this time. Will this work in with my oil to stop my kind of leak? And for how long? One more. Also, i need an oil change, if i put this in before my oil change, do i put in another 1-2 oz oz after my oil change? Or will that one treatment be enough?

How long can I drive with the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak product inside the engine. Can I still drive the car for a few more months until my next oil change or do I need to change the oil once the fix is done.

Im so confused…i have a 96 corolla leaking from the pan and possibly rear main. So i purchased the blue devil stop leak. The directions say use 8oz to treat 4-6 quarts. On here Ive seen you instruct to only use 1 oz per quart capacity so i went with that. 3.2 quarts fills her up so i went with about 3.5oz of TBD product. Was this correct or did i need to use the entire bottle to properly seal my oil leaks?

Thank you for asking about your Mercedes Benz E320. Yes, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is compatible to use with synthetic oil and is safe to use on your vehicle. You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

I have a 1965 Corvair which leaks less than most, but leaks nonetheless. Mostly likely pushrod tube o-rings. Would I be better using the regular oil leak sealer or the “rear main seal” sealer. Thanks

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 23, 2018 at 12:13 pm

      Bob-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Corvair. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is more concentrated and is the universal application that will work for oil pan leaks, rear main seal leaks, valve cover gasket leaks, etc. Whereas the Rear Main Sealer is specifically formulated for just the rear main seal. If you are not 100% sure where the vehicle is leaking or there seem to be multiple leaks, then we recommend using BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak.

      Thank you!

I drive a 66 convertible. Better off just replacing the pushrod tube o rings. It is actually pretty easy. Just a little messy. Can do both sides in a couple hours. Replace the valve cover gaskets too.

Thank you for asking about your Nissan Sentra. Based on your description, you would be a great candidate for the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (https://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). I have tried Barr’s & Lucas Stop Leak treatments with varying success in the past. I purchased a bottle of Blue Devil today and in a limited amount of driving (10 miles) my gas mileage has increased from 22mpg to 26mpg.

My question is can I use Blue Devil Rear Seal treatment with the regular Blue Devil Oil Leak treatment? My car is a 1999 Audi A6 quattro and I have over 266,000 miles on the odometer. I noticed it started burning oil maybe 3 years ago. It doesn’t leak any in the driveway and I can’t really tell if it’s exhaust smoke is blue after startup (I do see white smoke, though).

I’m just really uneasy about mixing different oil additives with the oil. I am using Mobil-1 5w/30 Annual Drain oil.

Just bought the BlueDevil Oil stop last week for my 2005 Explorer. There are noticeable oil leaks found on the back of the car, which I suspect the leaking from the rear differential seal ( Pinion seal). If so, Where I should add the BlueDevil?

    Thanks greatly!

Thank you for asking about your Ford Explorer. You can add the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak to the transfer case, assuming it is 4-wheel drive. You will want to use one oz. of the product per quart of oil in the system.

      Thank you!

Your Ford Explorer’s transfer case hold about 3 pints of oil, so you would be using about 1-2 ounces of the product.

    • BD Auto Pro on November 29, 2018 at 9:35 pm

      Alan,

Leaks between the engine and transmission are difficult to diagnose. You can start by checking to see what color the leaking fluid is. If it is golden or brown then its most likely engine oil. If it’s red at all then it would be transmission fluid. If it’s transmission fluid you can use BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to stop the leak. If is leaking engine oil you should check out our article on leaking rear main seals to see if that is the problem you have or if you’ve got another leak somewhere else on your engine.

      Thanks again for your question!

Unfortunately, we do not manufacture any products that are designed to stop transmission fluid leaks coming from the cooler lines. BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is made to stop leaks coming from rubber seals/gaskets. A hard part repair may be your best option.

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 17, 2019 at 9:42 am

      Anthony-

Thank you for asking about your Jeep Cherokee. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended for leaks that are seeping or lightly dripping. Typically with the product, you should expect to start seeing result after approximately 100-200 miles of driving. Unfortunately, if you are losing oil too quickly, you would lose the product just as quickly, and wouldn’t be able to keep the product in the system long enough in order to get the benefit of using it. Replacing the seal may be your best option.

Typically, it will be around 100-200 miles of driving before the product is able to seal. It does not have to be a continuous drive. You are fine to go in 5,10 mile intervals, here and there. Just keep in mind, it will be around 100 miles of driving before you start to notice improvement.

Hi, my 2014 BMW X3 is leaking oil (i’m thinking it’s due to a bad Valve Gasket) and I will be getting it fixed within the up coming weeks but in the mean time can I use your product Oil Stop Leak to lessen the oil leak? Will this product effect or make it more costly in getting the car fixed as it states “permanent fix” for your product?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 7, 2019 at 3:45 pm

      Jerry-

Thank you for asking about your BMW X3. Using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak would not be a detriment or prohibit having the seal/gasket replaced down the line. How quickly are you losing oil. As long as the leak isn’t more than seeping or lightly dripping, you would be good candidate for the product. Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal. There may not be a need to have the valve cover gasket replaced.

Hi, I have a 2010 ford explorer with dual air, I have a leak from the evaporator, gas last for about 2 months, I filled up just 1 time, I have a couple of questions: 1. I currently have gas in the system, AC works, but the compressor stops and start, should I empty and vacum the system or can I just add the sealer and complete the missing gas, second question is, if in the future I have to change the compressor or the evaporator, what is going to happen when the system is open and exposed to the air?, will the sealant clog the system?, if you say no, why not?, the system will be exposed to the air …..Thanks…..

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 26, 2019 at 10:03 am

      Julio-

Thank you asking about your Ford Explorer. As per the directions, A/C system must be evacuated or partially depleted to properly install Red Angel. Activated at the leak point only, Red Angel will not crystallize with existing oxygen or moisture in the system. After AC leak repair is achieved, Red Angel will continue to lubricate and condition working parts. Use Red Angel to fix AC leaks, for preventative maintenance, or to warranty hard part replacement against future leak points.

      Thank you!

I have a 93 Ford Explorer that had a slow engine oil leak for years. It would lose about a quart of oil each month.

I poured a bottle of the Blue Devil Oil Stop Leak in the oil tank, and within a week the oil leak stopped. But a few weeks later a very slow leak has redeveloped. Any suggestions? Should I add another bottle or half bottle of the product to the oil? I am assuming that there is still a crack in a gasket somewhere, or a new one has developed.

Thank you for asking about your Ford Explorer. Based on your description, a second application of the Oil Stop Leak would be recommended.
