How Much Does it Cost to Replace a Head Gasket?

#driveyourlife

How much does it cost to replace a head gasket?  Usually the head gasket repair costs you receive as an answer to this question is enough to make you want to scrap your car and start riding a bike.  After the initial shock, there are usually a lot of questions:

What is a head gasket?

The head gasket is the seal between your cylinder head and engine block.  It keeps coolant in the water jacket and combustion gases directed to the exhaust.  It can be made of many different materials and can fail over time.

What happens when the head gasket fails?

A failed head gasket, often referred to as a “blown” head gasket, can have a few symptoms.  Your car could be leaking or spraying coolant into the engine compartment, or onto the ground, it could be overheating, you could have white smoke coming from your exhaust or there could be exhaust gases in your coolant.

Why does a head gasket fail?

Over time, the heating and cooling cycles an engine goes through can cause the engine block, or the heads to become warped and no longer fit perfectly together.  This leaves a gap where the head gasket should be making a seal and eventually a leak.  If your engine has overheated, or is regularly revved to high RPMs, this process can be sped up leading to early failure of the head gasket.

Why is it so expensive to replace a head gasket?

On most cars, a significant portion of the engine must be taken off in order replace the head gasket.  Many of the components removed, like the cam shafts and timing gears, must be set back in exact orientations to ensure the motor will run properly when reassembled.  All these things make a head gasket replacement difficult and tedious.

Replacing a head gasket is a difficult job and should be left to skilled mechanics.  Even if you have a friend who knows a lot about cars, it’s a big job to trust to a weekend wrencher that usually takes specialty tools and a lot of experience.

But there is one other question you should be asking:

Is there anything else I can do besides spending a small fortune to get my car safely and reliably back on the road?

The good news is, YES!

BlueDevil has a line of products specially designed to quickly repair your leaking or blown head gasket. BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is specially formulated to seal any leak in a blown head gasket due to wrapped or cracked heads or block.

Use BlueDevil 32 oz. Head Gasket Sealer for quick repair of extreme leaks. BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is guaranteed to seal your head gasket leak.  Save hundreds or even thousands of dollars and get your car back on the road!

I have a 1999 Chevy Malibu an it is making a weird like loud noise like something is stuck an it is rattling around

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 28, 2015 at 2:11 pm

      Kalynn-

Thanks for your question about your 99 Malibu! The noise you are hearing is hard to diagnose but usually rattling noises are associated with bad break parts or very sever engine damage. Try reading our article about noisy breaks and seeing if that sounds like it is your problem. You can read that article here: https://gobdp.com/blog/squeaking-brakes/.

Also if you have sever engine damage it can sound like a rattling as the parts inside slap around while the engine is spinning. If the noise sounds like it is coming from the engine compartment, we recommend you taking your car to a mechanic right away to avoid any further damage.

    2006 Chev Impala LT 3.9L
My dealership says my intake gasket is leaking and that there are other leaks but they are not sure where and would start with the intake gasket. a little over a year ago they said my head gasket had started leaking but it was nothing to worry about at the time. could these leaks be related and what are the aproximate costs of replacement or fixing?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 16, 2015 at 6:51 pm

      Taylor,

Thanks for your question about your Impala. A leaking head gasket is always something to worry about so it may be worth getting a second opinion about the leaks you have in your car. It is also difficult to know which gasket they were referencing leaking in your intake as there are multiple gaskets in your intake on that car. Our best recommendation would be to have your car looked at by another mechanic in your area that you can trust to compare costs and diagnosis.

I am a factory-trained mechanic of 25 yrs (now retired). If I might be totally frank, the last place you want to go with ANYTHING is the dealer. Ask around to EVERYONE you know if they know of a good shop. Start with the free computer testing you can get at AutoZone. Then go to the Yelp website & call up auto repair shops in your town. Read ALL the information on shops around you, keeping in mind that some reviews could be a “plant” by employees. When one has many, many top reviews, call & ask what they would charge to check your car & give you an estimate for repair. (DO NOT tell them what YOU think or what the dealer told you). It might cost you around $100 to get that information or they might not charge you anything.

I have an 03 impala which i just replaced the radiator on. After replacing the radiator the mechanic told me that i had a ‘blown headgasket’ and warped cylinder head and that the cost of repair isn’t worth it and i should just get a new car. Will this blue devil product be enough to temporarily repair my car so i can work for a month to replace my car or make the necessary repairs to keep my car?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 23, 2015 at 11:51 am

Yes, we would recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer to help repair your blown head gasket. Once BlueDevil creates a seal it does become a permanent repair. My car is experiencing a blown head gasket, I drove it for about 300 miles with overheating problems because this car was my only way to get to work. I had a cracked expansion tank, fixed that but my mechanic said I have a blown head gasket and told me it would be $2000 for my 2001 Mazda 626 head repair. Which one of your products works the best for a blown head gasket because I do not want to spend all that money. Thanks a lot, Jose Agulto.

      Jose,

Thanks for your question and we’re sorry to hear about the blown head gasket on your Mazda 626. Since you’ve driven so long with your blown head gasket, it’s likely that the leak has gotten bigger so we would recommend using BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). It comes with a free bottle of BlueDevil Radiator Flush to ensure a good and permanent seal for your head gasket.

I’ve got a 92 F150, 5.8L. Number 7&8 cylinders have low compression (60 & 70lbs respectively). The Chilton manual says that when a couple cylinders next to each other lose compression it’s a sign of a leaking head gasket. This stuff will help?

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 26, 2015 at 1:00 pm

      Terry-

Yes, we do recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer to help repair your F-150.

Based on your description, it sounds like your vehicle may be getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with a low compression reading. If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will sometimes notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull. Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly.

Feel free to contact us with any questions.

      Thank You!

I have an 88 Chevy g20. We’re replacing the waterpump, thermostat gasket, lower radiator hose and fan clutch. And my mechanic said that it either has a blown or cracked head gasket, my question is would the sealer work? And without using sealer how long would I be able to run the vehicle?

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 3, 2015 at 2:53 pm

      Devon-

It is a good idea to replace the water pump and other various things in your cooling system prior to attempting to use BlueDevil. Once the parts have been replaced, we recommend applying the proper amount of the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. Overall, it carries a success rate of over 90%.

It is impossible to predict how long you will be able to safely drive your Chevy without addressing the blown/cracked head gasket.

I have a 2002 Chrysler300m. I have white smoke coming out of my tail pipe. But it seems as if it is seeping from underneath the car. The car isn’t running hot but it does hesitate while driving as if it is losing power then kicks up immediately. Like it is gaining power from somewhere instantly and is now able to go. I’m told it may very well be a head gasket. Not sure what I should do. Thinking of getting a diagnostic done at a shop. Went to auto zone and codes came up stating either it is a defective or loose fuel cap. Evap canister or hose cracked not connected. Purge or vent solenoid defective. Vacuum leak at engine. Very lost right now

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 15, 2015 at 11:37 am

It sounds like you may be dealing with multiple issues with your Chrysler. We recommend taking it to a certified mechanic to be properly diagnosed so that you have a better idea as to what needs to be addressed. This should help you be able to weigh out what all of your options may be to get the vehicle running smoothly.

I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT and it sputters when I first start it up. Then I drive it a little and the temp. gauge goes up. And after you shut the car of you can hear water bubbling. There is know milkey oil on the dip stick and no white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. And the car runs well and it doesn’t skip a beat. Does this sound like a blown head gasket. Also, I just had an intake manifold gasket replaced.

I had a 02 jimmy overheat and blow the gasket. I can watch the water go as fast as I pour it in. Mixing with the oil. Just how good is your stuff??? Last hope would be to scrap it. But just paid to repair this truck. Plugs, wires, cap, button, oil change, coolant, and fuel filter at once. Ran like new for 3 days then Boom. Side of road and tow fee…. Don’t want to spend anymore unless your product that good. Like I would video and share if that good but need one on one talk and guaranteed.

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 7, 2015 at 9:35 am

      Sam-

Based on your description, unfortunately, we would not recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer in this case. If you are losing water just as quickly as you pour it in, you would lose the product just as quickly, and would not be able to keep it in the system long enough for it to seal. A hard part repair may be your best option.

      Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 24, 2015 at 10:06 am

      Carina,

Thanks for your question about your Ford Focus. It is possible that when your car overheated due to the coolant leak the head gasket was damaged. BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/pour-n-go-head-gasket-sealer-00209/) is designed to fix this type of leak. We would recommend making sure you change your oil immediately after sealing your head gasket leak to make sure you do not damage your engine further.

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 31, 2015 at 11:54 am

      Jan,

Thanks for your question about your daughter’s 300m. Once a car has overheated, it is not usual for the head gasket to be blown. You can always try taking your car to another mechanic or even the dealership to get a second opinion. Also, most auto parts stores sell a chemical testing agent that will test for the presence of exhaust gases in the coolant. If you do have exhaust gas chemicals in the coolant you’re guaranteed to have a blown head gasket. If you do discover a blown head gasket you can use BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/) to seal the leak and get your daughter’s car working again.

      Thanks again for your question!

I have a 2004 Ford Focus and it just overheated this past Saturday. I was driving and I heard a pop and the vehicle instantly overheated and went to a slow drag. I made it home and parked it for the rest of the day. But I did drive it to the bank the next day and it immediately overheated after about 10 mins of driving. I took it to the shop yesterday and he is sure that it is the gasket. He is replacing the thermostat today to determine if that is the case. But I believe so, it even overheated as I drove it the three miles to the shop and it kept sputtering going slow and then kicking up to regular speed. Would the blue devil be something that is an option for me. I do not have the means to pay what I know it would cost to fix this.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 1, 2016 at 11:14 am

      Jessica-

Thank you for asking about your Chrysler Sebring. In order to get the benefit of using the product, the vehicle must be able to idle for a full 50 minutes, without over heating or stalling out, and you should not be losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minutes. If you are not losing water too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the product. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

How much to replace a head gasket on a 97 Chevy Lumina car? Drove it not realizing it was leaking anti-freeze and it overheated.

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 1, 2016 at 11:42 am

      J.W.-

The price may vary quite a bit depending on what part of the country you live in and what type of facility the vehicle is being repaired at. A rough estimate for head gasket replacement in a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina is $1,100 – $1,800.

Another option would be to try BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). The product works well to seal leaking or blown head gaskets and is a permanent repair. It can be purchased locally through AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, O’Reilly Auto Parts, NAPA, and many other auto parts retailers.

I have a 1994 Acura Integra, if I turn on the engine after a few minutes a fluid starts spurting of the engine where all the hoses are connected. I believe it’s radiator fluid because it’s bright green. Obviously, I need to check the hoses first to make sure the don’t have a small hole but what is the worst case scenario? Is this a head gasket problem? How much am I looking to pay for this problem?

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 28, 2016 at 9:02 am

      Ricky-

Thank you for asking about your Acura Integra. Based on your description, you don’t have any of the tell-tale signs of a blown head gasket. We recommend checking the hoses to make sure they are properly connected and assure they haven’t developed a leak, replacing them if need be. If the problem persists, you may want to bring the vehicle to a certified ASE mechanic for a proper diagnosis.

      Thank you!

Where is the smoke blowing from? White smoke coming from the exhaust pipe is a tell-tale sign of a blown head gasket. Are you noticing a loss of water/coolant? I have an Audi A6 Quattro and I recently got the radiator replaced which cost around $600. Now the coolant is leaking again but not because of a leak in the radiator. I also hear a clinking noise in the engine when the car runs so I think something with the head gasket is messed up or cracked. Can I use the sealer to repair that? I don’t want to spend a lot of money because the car has so many miles and it’s old.

Thank you for asking about your Audi A6 Quattro. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/. The clinking noise in the engine may be indicating that you have water/coolant in the oil. We recommend changing the oil before and after if that is the case. So I have a 2008 Scion XB with one owner (ME) that is almost at 99,000 miles. I am going to be making a drive from CA to ATL and don’t want to have any problems on the way. I took it to Pepboys and they said I have a verrry small leak that they could barely see in the head gasket that is not causing any problems but they suggested I should get it replaced, along with the water pump, thermostat and serpentine belt. Should I just get the pump, belt and thermostat replaced and use the blue devil dealer because to get the gasket replaced is my whole budget?? And if I do put the blue devil in now would it hinder me from getting the gasket replaced later on??

If I have not had my car completely diagnosed, however have noticed that my engine looks milky. I was told after getting my oil changed that its due to a head gasket. If I purchase the sealer would I need to get everything flushed from my engine to remove the milky contents, or would that work itself out once it is sealed?

Thank you for asking about your Chevy C1500. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). 1993 nissan pulsar car was running fine and then white steam billowing from under hood and thermostat gauge instantly registered hot. Called AA roadside and man said had split radiator…had it towed home and didn’t drive. Replaced radiator and thermo fan switch….NOW fan isn’t working, boiling in over flow container and hissing from somewhere by the fan switch. Any ideas what the problem could be, could the head gasket be the culprit? And would your sealer sort it?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 2, 2017 at 11:07 am

      Barbara-

Thank you for asking about your Nissan Pulsar. It is possible that you are getting combustion/exhaust gases pumping back into the cooling system.  You can use a “Block Dye Tester” to confirm whether or not that is the case.
BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will still work if your vehicle is getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure.  To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading.  If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull.  Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly.  Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system.

      Thank you!

I have a Mitsubishi Pajero 1999. We have flushed the coolant liquid at the occasion of a service (because I could hear water running when I pressed the accelerator) and our mechanic told us he suspected a “poor condition of the head gasket because he detected a high pressure in the engine”. The temperature of the motor has always reach half way of the engine temperature gauge and it’s still the case… The level of the coolant liquid remains constant.
Is it the head gasket which cause the high pressure in the engine or another component?
Then do we have imperatively to change the head gasket or can we use your product to seal any potential leak?
Do we have to fix/change others pieces (than the head gasket) to fix the problem?
Thank you very much for your answers!

I have a 2002 saturn vue. Ive know for a while that i need to replace the gaskets but as you know it is verry expensive. ($500 just for the parts and not the expensive labour) A past mechanic said i needed:
    R & R valve cover gasket- both
    Valve cover gasket set
    Upper intake gasket
On my way home yesterday (fortunately very close) i suddenly had a dark cloudy exhaust cloud. My friend said it was the gaskets going and told me to buy another car again. (If i was rich i would have a better car without these issues lol )
Will your product work on all 3 of those parts i was told i needed?

Thank you for asking about your Chevrolet Beat. You would need about 473 ml to properly treat the system. The product is available for purchase on our website, https://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/. Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal. You should only need to use the product once.

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Caravan. As long as you are not losing transmission fluid too quickly, you would be a great candidate for the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer (https://store.gobdp.com/transmission-sealer-00236/). You will be using one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system, and should expect to see results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.
