How can I Stop My Transmission From Leaking Fluid?

#driveyourlife

Have you ever looked under your car and found that it was leaking some sort of fluid that you didn’t even know your car had in it?  Most of us know engine oil is brown or black, coolant is usually green, but you usually don’t see a red fluid.  Automatic transmission fluid is still oil, but usually thinner than engine or gear oil and tinted red in color.  If you’ve found that your car is leaking oil and it fits this description, then you most likely have a transmission leak.

How to identify an automatic car transmission leak

To check for a leak in your automatic transmission, you can do a visual inspection to try and find the leak point.  Here are some of the most likely places to check:

Automatic car transmission leak points:

  • Drive shaft seal
  • Transmission pan seal
  • Input shaft seal
  • Valve body seal

Transmission leak fixChecking your transmission fluid level can also be confusing.  Unlike your engine oil your transmission fluid level needs to be checked while your vehicle is parked and running.  The dip stick will often have a red cap on it and be towards the rear of the engine near the firewall.  There will be 2 different level indications on the dipstick, one for when the fluid is cool, and one for when the fluid is warm.  Your automatic transmission fluid level should indicate in the “cold” range when you first start your vehicle and haven’t yet driven.  It should indicate inside the “hot” range after you’ve driven your vehicle relatively hard, for example, up a long hill, towing, or with the transmission in a lower gear to increase engine RPM.

Once you’ve identified your leak either by a low fluid level or visual inspection, the next question is: How much will this cost to fix?  If you let your transmission operate with a low fluid level, it will cause it to start shifting hard, but eventually will cause permanent damage and could cost thousands to replace.

How to fix a transmission leak and avoid high transmission leak repair costs

350x200_TSLIf you’ve ever had to learn the hard way just how much it costs to fix a transmission leak you’re well aware for the need to avoid that expense again. The best way to prevent these high transmission repair costs is to use BlueDevil Transmission SealerBlueDevil Transmission Sealer is added directly to your automatic transmission with no need to do a fluid change. Just add BlueDevil Transmission Sealer and it will work as you drive to seal your leak.  As you drive, Transmission Sealer will be absorbed into the worn out seals and gaskets in your transmission restoring them to their original size and sealing properties.

I have a Ford F250 1999 pick up truck and the front main seal is leaking. Will this work to stop that leak ? How much shouldI use ?

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 17, 2016 at 11:55 am

          Rebecca-

Yes, BlueDevil Transmission Sealer will work to stop the leak coming from your front seal. Based on the capacity of your transmission we recommend adding 1/2 of the bottle (8 ounces) to your transmission. You can expect to see results after about 100 miles of driving.

          Thanks!

My 2003 Chevy Avalanche just stopped accelerating while driving, when I pulled the truck over I noticed all of the transmission fluid has leaked out. I purchased a brand new transmission in 2009 and I don’t think I should need a new one so soon. Do you think simply adding more fluid could fix the prob or are there any other cheaper alternatives other than purchasing a new transmission.?

        • BlueDevil Pro on September 15, 2016 at 8:58 am

          Anthony-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Avalanche. Unfortunately, it does not sound like simply adding more fluid would correct the problem. We recommend using the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer, http://store.gobdp.com/transmission-sealer-00236/. You would fill the system with transmission fluid, leaving just enough room for the recommended amount of the product. You will be using one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system. You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

          Thank you!

            Evelyn-

BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is designed to stop transmission fluid leaks coming from any of the rubber seals or gaskets. We recommend adding the proper amount of BlueDevil to stop your fluid loss. You should apply 1 ounce of BlueDevil per every 1 quart of fluid capacity. Expect to start seeing results after approximately 100 miles of driving.

I have a Ford F-150 2003 and it’s leaking a red liquid substance underneath my truck how will I able to fix that on my own then taking it to a mechanic.

          • BD Auto Pro on November 15, 2018 at 12:47 pm

            Christian,

Thanks for your question about your Ford F-150. If the fluid is red then on your truck it would either be power steering fluid or transmission fluid. Your transmission is back behind your motor so if it is leaking you would most likely see drips about in the middle of your truck. Your power steering system is in front of your motor so if you see drips up by the wheels or towards the front of your truck. If you look underneath and find out where the leak is, simply add the appropriate leak stop product to that component and you’ll be on your way to fixing your issue!

            Thanks again for your question!

Hi I have a 05 Ford Escape that’s leaking fluid from the back seal@ wat would be recommended

        • BlueDevil Pro on December 13, 2016 at 2:48 pm

          Penny-

I assume you are referring to a transmission fluid leak. If that is the case then we recommend adding the proper amount of BlueDevil Transmission Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/transmission-sealer-00236/). Based on the transmission capacity of your Ford Escape you should add 10 ounces of BlueDevil.

One model of the 2005 Ford Escape is equipped with a CVT Transmission; if yours is equipped with the CVT then we do not recommend adding our product. CVT transmissions require a very specific type of fluid that can not be mixed with anything.

I have 1997 dodge ram 1500 2 wheel drive 5.9 letters. I started having issues with the transmission. I have noticed that every now and then the reverse gear will not kick in. If I drive it forward a bit, then reverse it, it will work. I went underneath the truck and noticed that the transmission pan is a wet. It has been leaking fluid. What do you recommend I do?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 23, 2014 at 12:33 pm

BlueDevil Transmission Sealer would be appropriate to stop your leak. The reason the transmission may be hesitating is because of the fluid being to low.

When you add the product, be sure to use one ounce of BlueDevil per one quart of fluid capacity.

      • Dustin on February 24, 2016 at 4:58 pm

will adding more then one per quart make it leak worse ?

        • BlueDevil Pro on February 25, 2016 at 8:34 am

          Dustin-

Adding more than one oz of the Transmission Sealer per quart of fluid may make the leak worse if you are overfilling the system. It is not one of those things where more of the product would be better, so you really only want to add the recommended amount. Also, you should not overfill the system, as this could cause further issues.

          Thank you!

Thank you for asking about your Jeep Grand Cherokee. Based on your description, as long as you are not losing fluid too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer. You can expect to start seeing results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

Yes, the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer has a very high success rate and will work for the type of leak you have described. The dealer replaced the transmission on my 2nd vehicle, a 2006 Lincoln Mark LT a few months ago. Now it is sluggish when accelerating all over again and I have been told that it is leaking Diffrential fluid because it leaves transmission fluid on my driveway when I drive it. Is this a seperate issue or should it be covered under the warranty that came with the new transmission? Did they tighten or seal something improperly?

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 24, 2015 at 11:41 am

      Charla-

I would first confront the dealer that did the transmission work to see if they can cover the repair under warranty. If not, we recommend adding the proper amount of BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak to help stop the leak from your differential. You will not need the whole bottle, add 1 ounce of BlueDevil per 1 quart of fluid; most likely you will only need to add 2 – 3 ounces of BlueDevil.

      We hope this helps!

We recommend adding about 8 ounces of the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to your transmission fluid. The should eliminate the leak and prevent you from having to add transmission fluid in the future. Keep in mind, it may take about 100 miles of driving before you see full results; if you do not drive a whole lot it can take a couple of days.

I have a 2005 GM 3500 truck and the transmission fluid is leaking and I was wondering if the Blue Devil Stop Leak would help to stop the leak.
If so, would one bottle be good enough to stop the leak. Also if I use the product would it affect the vehicle warranty?

    Thank you

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 9, 2015 at 10:06 am

      Roger-

Yes, the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer would be appropriate and safe to use in your GM truck. You may want to check with the dealership on whether or not using this product will affect your warranty status. However, if the vehicle is under warranty you may be able to have the seal replaced at no cost.

If you do end up using the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer you should add about 10 ounces to your transmission fluid.

Thanks for your question about your Silverado. We would recommend you use BlueDevil Transmission Sealer (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/transmission-sealer-00236/) to seal those leaks. BlueDevil Transmission Sealer will enlarge the shaft seal to seal that leak and your speed sensor is sealed by an o-ring, which should be sealed by BlueDevil Transmission Sealer as well.

Yes, the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is compatible with the Nissan Type J Transmission Fluid. Keep in mind, you only need to add 1 ounce of BlueDevil per every 1 quart of fluid capacity; often times you will do not need the full bottle.

      Thank you!

If the leak is coming out around one of the seals or gaskets then we do recommend using the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer. You should add 1 ounce of BlueDevil per every 1 quart of capacity. You can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is actually a universal application, and can be used in the transmission system. As long as the system was not overfilled and you are not losing fluid too quickly, you should be alright and the product should be able to help seal your leak.

      Thank you!

I am not sure what the capacity is for a 2006 ford f150 with automatic trans but after driving last night— this morning I have a puddle underneath my truck and I was going to get some blue devil to put in with the additional fluid needed but I got confused on how much to add since I was not sure what the capacity is. can you tell me if I need to add more than one quart should I add say for instance 2 quarts of oil I would add (2 )1oz of the blue devil is this how it works? my truck is old but I need to keep it going as long as I can. thank you

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 25, 2015 at 12:21 pm

      Angela,

Thanks for your question about your F150. You should add enough BlueDevil Transmission Sealer for the total amount of transmission fluid in your truck. Your transmission actually holds over 13 quarts of fluid so you can safely add a full bottle of BlueDevil Transmission Sealer. After you add BlueDevil Transmission Sealer, top off your transmission fluid with the proper type by checking the level on the dipstick. The transmission fluid dipstick is yellow and on the passenger side of your engine bay behind your oil cap. You should check the level with your truck running and in “park”.

      Thanks again for your question!

Hi I have a 2007 nissan altima I am leaking transmission fluid. It is a fast leak. Will blue devil work for it?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 25, 2016 at 9:13 am

      Marla-

Yes, BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is specifically designed to stop transmission fluid leaks. As long as it is not pouring through transmission fluid there is a very good chance BlueDevil can seal it. Please note that 1 ounce of BlueDevil treats 1 quart of transmission fluid so often times you will not need to add the full 16 ounce bottle (more is not better). Once the product is added you can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

Yes, BlueDevil Transmission Sealer will work to seal any leaks coming from the torque converter seal. The correct amount to use is 1 ounce of BlueDevil per every 1 quart of fluid capacity. You can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

No, the product will not have any negative effect on any of your seals or gaskets. BlueDevil is only slightly expanding the seals and rejuvenating them to bring them back to the original size and condition.

Hello, I have a 2000 Chevy Tahoe and have been noticing transmission oil on the ground. And driving out yesterday I heard a crackle sound like I rolled over a water bottle. But I didn’t though, I noticed my truck wasn’t speeding up as fast like when I was pushing on the gas paddle. After returning home right away, I tried to head back out and noticed the truck will not go in reverse but will go forward…..HELP does this mean my transmission is gone? I really hope not!!!! Can I use our product and it will fix the problem…..

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Tahoe. Based on your description, we would recommend using the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer for your leak. You may want to change the transmission fluid in the system first, as any build up or foreign substances in the system could cause transmission issues. You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

Unfortunately, we do not recommend using BlueDevil in a CVT transmission. Continuously Variable Transmissions are very specific as to the type of fluid that is compatible.

          Rich-

CVT Transmission require very specific transmission fluid that should not be mixed with anything else. We definitely do not recommend the use of BlueDevil Transmission Sealer in a CVT Transmission.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 13, 2016 at 9:10 am

Thank you for asking about your Kia Picanto. Based on your description, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is the product you would want to use. The Oil Stop Leak is a universal application, so that would treat a leaking oil pan gasket, valve cover seal, rear main seal, transmission, power steering, etc. You may want to check your oil and transmission fluid levels prior, as that would be a pretty good indication as to where the leak was coming from.

Thank you for asking about your Jeep Grand Cherokee. As long as you are not losing transmission fluid too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer. You should make sure the system is filled, leaving just enough room for the recommended amount of the product. You will be using one oz of the product per quart of fluid in the system. Is this safe for a Mercedes 722.607 transmission? if so the fluid level parameters are very specific and experts state that even a few ounces of transmission fluid over the limit for these transmissions can be damaging….somewhere around 6 or seven ounces of your product is required. Can your product substitute for 136 transmission fluid to bring it up to a desired level on the dip stick without damaging these transmissions?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 2, 2016 at 11:51 am

      Tony-

Yes, the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is compatible in your Mercedes. You are correct in the fact that it is very important for you to not overfill the transmission. The product is not a substitute for your transmission fluid, so if your transmission fluid is already at capacity, you would want to drain enough fluid out in order to add the 6-7 ounces of the product needed for your vehicle. Thank you for asking about your Chevy Blazer. The BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is intended for leaks that are seeping or lightly dripping from the system. Thank you for asking about your Saturn. The BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is intended for leaks that are seeping or lightly dripping from the system. Typically, you should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving. If you are losing transmission fluid to the extent that you would lose your capacity before you got to 200 miles or so of driving, you would more than likely lose the product in that time, and would not be able to keep it in the system long enough in order to get the benefit of using it.

If I have a 04 chevy silverado and my trans leaked all the fluid out ( it won’t show up on stick when truck is running) can I put more trans fluid in and sealer? Will this fix my problem?

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 8, 2017 at 10:44 am

      Justin-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Silverado. Unfotunately, it seems that you are losing transmission fluid too quickly for what the product is intended for, thus, you wouldn’t be able to keep the product in the system long enough in order to get the benefit of using it. A hard part repair may be your best option.

      Thank you!

I have a 2013 kia optima hybrid it is leaking from the transmission oil pan because my son ran over a rock nothing seems cracked its just drips a little. My question is if I put a sealant would it mess up the transmission.

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 27, 2017 at 11:36 am

      Tina-

BlueDevil Transmission Sealer works by reconditioning the rubber seals/gaskets throughout the transmission; it does not harden or thicken to stop leaks. The product is not designed to stop a leak coming from a physical crack in the transmission. We do not manufacture any products that would be able to seal that type of leak.

      Thank you!

Thank you for asking about your Pontiac Grand Prix. Unfortunately, we would not recommend adding the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to the system as it currently is. Being that another product was previously used, we recommend having the transmission system flushed, prior to adding the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer. Thank you for asking about your Lexus ES300. Based on your description, you would be a great candidate for the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/transmission-sealer-00236/). Thank you for asking about your Nissan Cube. Unfortunately BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is not compatible to use in CVT transmissions. We do not manufacture a product that will work on that type of transmission. CVT transmissions require a very specific type of transmission fluid that can not be contaminated with any other type of fluid. A hard part repair may be your best option.

I had a small leak in the transmission of my 2007 Honda Odyssey. The fellow at the parts store told me to add the entire 16 oz bottle of your transmission sealant and it would fix the problem. I did jus tthat. But after looking closer at the directions it appears I put too much of your product in. I believe the ATF capacity for the Honda is 8 quarts, so I put 2oz in for each quart. Is this going to be a problem? Should I drain the transmission (3.3 quarts) and replace with straight ATF to dilute the solution? Thanks for your help.

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 24, 2017 at 11:45 am

      Matt-

Thank your for asking about your Honda Odyssey. Unless the system was overfilled, adding too much of the product wouldn’t have caused any harm, however, it would kind of limit the effectiveness of the product. It is not one of those things where more of the product would be better. Have you driven the vehicle at all since this occurred? I need clarification on how to use this product. I have a 1989 Chevy Cheyenne pick up truck.

I noticed a huge red puddle under my truck (even after the mechanic “fixed” this issue), and I think most of the transmission fluid has leaked out.

    1. How much of the BlueDevil transmission sealer bottle should I add, AND
    2. How much new transmission fluid should I add?

I’m so confused and miss driving my truck… thanks for your help!

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 5, 2018 at 9:26 am

      Lexielou-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Cheyenne. The system should be filled almost too capacity with transmission fluid, leaving just enough room for the recommended amount of the product. You will use one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system. It is important not to overfill the system, so you may want to add the recommended amount of the product first, and then top it off with transmission fluid as needed.

      Thank you!

I am finalizing a restoration of a ’69 Chevy C10 with a TH350 transmission. The truck has been driven about 50 miles in the last year however it was off the road undergoing a frame off restoration for several years. No leaks were apparent during the build and test drives or sitting after running. I recently drove it a bit and sat idling for a long while after picking up some parts. I noticed on the end of the 3 mile ride home that the transmission fluid was leaking out substantially. I have refilled and driven a mile or two since with only minor leaks however I don’t want to pull the transmission and replace seals, etc. unless necessary. Would your products help me attempt to avoid this? Note the leak is NOT coming from the linkage, cooler line inputs (capped), transmission pan, dipstick area or any other area where a trail is noticed. It had to have come from under the cover plate meaning front seal, pump or torque converter. The truck still drives and shifts fine…

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 26, 2018 at 2:33 pm

      Keith-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy C10. Based on your description, we do recommend using the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer. The product works by revitalizing and reconditioning the rubber seals/gaskets. As long as you are not losing fluid too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the product. I have had it in 5 times since I purchased the car for a transmission leak. they kept on replacing the pan gasket seal and finally replaced the seal with a new pan. Then got worse. They know tell me it is a porous casting at the lip where the gasket & the pan are bolted to the casing. Is there a reasonable fix for this that can be trusted without replacing the transmission such as an additive. Please advise. Could you please respond to my email. Thank you.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 30, 2019 at 3:07 pm

      Robert-

Thank you for asking about your Sautrn Sky SE. Based on your description, unfortunately, there isn’t an easy solution to the porous casting issue you are experiencing. The BlueDevi Transmission Sealer is intended to revitalize/recondition rubber seals and gaskets throughout the transmission system. The product would only have an influence on rubber. A hard part repair sounds to be your best option.
