How Can I Fix a Leaking Heater Core?

#driveyourlife

Having a leaking heater core can be one of the most frustrating leaks you can have in your vehicle.  Almost any leak in your car is an external leak, meaning the leaking fluid will just leak out onto the ground.  Sure, that isn’t the best for the environment and it can make a mess in your driveway or the parking lot at work, but at the end of the day as long as you keep your fluids topped off, you can keep driving your vehicle relatively comfortably.

What Does A Heater Core Do?

The purpose of a heater core is to bring warm coolant into the cabin of your vehicle so the ventilation air can be warmed up allowing your car’s defroster and heater to work properly. Think of it as a small radiator.

What are the symptoms of a leaking core?

A leaking heater core usually will cause a much more annoying leak.  On most new vehicles, the heater core is inside the cabin of the vehicle.  Even if you have an older vehicle with the heater core outside the cabin, leaking fluid can still find its way into the cabin through the ventilation ducts.

Having coolant leaking into the cabin of your vehicle can cause all sorts of problems.  First, when your car isn’t warmed up yet, the coolant will make a mess on your floorboards and possible start the process of corrosion.  As the coolant leaks onto your floor it will soak into your carpet and the padding.  As this moisture stays trapped in your carpet it can start to corrode the floor pan in your car.  Since this is all happening under the carpet, it can quickly get out of control without you ever knowing.  In the worst case, this corrosion can compromise the integrity of the floor of your vehicle making it unsafe.

Another problem with coolant leaking into the cabin of your vehicle is that once it is warmed up, that coolant will be almost 200 degrees!  This hot coolant will quickly turn to steam in your car and will definitely cause an unpleasant odor.  The steam can also quickly spread through your ventilation system making it very difficult to remove the odor.  Depending how big the leak is, the steam can cause fogging problems on your windows and leave you with no way to clear the condensation since it is your ventilation system that is spreading the problem.  Lastly, antifreeze is a poisonous substance so breathing in its vapors can even be harmful to you and your passengers.

If you have a leaking heater core, then you may have experienced some of these symptoms and have realized how frustrating it can be.  It isn’t unusual for heat cores to develop leaks because they are often made from relatively thin metal to help aid in the heat transfer from the hot coolant inside to the air being blown over it by your vehicle’s HVAC system.  This thin metal can develop cracks over time and the joints in your heater core can start to come loose due to vibrations in your vehicle and bumps in the road.

Can I replace or repair a leaking core?

Replacing a leaking heater core can be an extremely annoying project due to its location in your vehicle.  The heater core needs to be right next to the fan that pushes the air through your ventilation system.  That fan needs to be near the firewall of your car so it can have the ability to both pull air in from outside the vehicle, or recirculate the air in the cabin depending on the settings of the system.  If you have air condition in your car, then the AC evaporator will be right next to the heater core which is also a delicate piece of equipment that is difficult to move.

Fixing a leaking heater core will always be much easier than replacing one.  Since it is only a small leak in the heater core, we recommend simply sealing that leak and leaving your heater core in place.  You can do this by simply by adding BlueDevil Pour-N-Go to your vehicle’s radiator when your vehicle is cold.  When BlueDevil Pour-N-Go reaches the leak point, the temperature differential will cause a chemical weld to form sealing your leak without affecting any other part of your cooling system.

Do i just pour this in my coolant resivoir to seal my heater cord

            Debra-

If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there; do not pour it into the reservoir. It may be added into the hose or the opening on the radiator. Once BlueDevil has been added, reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

            Thank you!

Adding the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer through the reservoir could cause the product to start reacting before it gets a chance to circulate, as the engine may be hot by the time the product is pulled into the system. Based on your description, we’d recommend having the vehicle inspected and the leak diagnosed. It would be best to confirm the source of the leak before exploring solutions, as this could save you money from unnecessarily replacing parts.

I am about to use blue devil in my car but my heater cord is unplugged,,will it still work for the gasket

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 7, 2015 at 3:44 pm

Thank you for your question. The direction about putting the heater on to the max is to draw heat from the engine to keep it from overheating during that 50 minute idle. As long as the vehicle isn’t going to overheat during that 50 minutes, the product should be able to help seal your leak.

      Thank you!

No , it would only be necessary to flush the system prior to adding the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/. You can simply drain the radiator and refill it with your regular 50/50 mix once the process is complete.

I got a question how do i flush my radiator because i got a heater core leak

          • BlueDevil Pro on August 28, 2017 at 10:06 am

            Jacob-

When radiator is cool, remove cap, open draincock and drain cooling system. Collect used antifreeze for disposal. When disposing used antifreeze/coolant, please follow local laws and regulations.
Close radiator draincock and fill cooling system with water. Reinstall radiator cap and run engine for 10 minutes with heater on max. Turn off engine for radiator to cool.
            Repeat (Step 1).
Close radiator draincock and add BlueDevil RADIATOR FLUSH. Top off cooling system with water while motor is running. (Product services systems up to 12 quarts.) Replace radiator cap.
            A. For only flushing your radiator, run engine with heater on max for 10 minutes.B. For deeper radiator cleaning, drive your vehicle for 3-6 hours at normal driving conditions or intermittently over a period of a few days, if weather permits. Do not let the cooling system temperature fall below 32 degrees F.
Allow engine to cool. Repeat drain procedure (Step 1). Flush cooling system thoroughly with water until all cleaner is removed.
Close drain and install required amount of antifreeze.

I have 2004 Saturn Vue that has a very small leak in the heater core (i believe). No radiator cap and the engine is a Honda V6. I don’t especially want to disconnect the radiator hose to add it and would like to use the coolant reservoir.
Is this something I can do for this minimal problem?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 28, 2016 at 11:54 am

      Jim-
Due to your vehicle only having a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, we would have recommended that instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you would disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there. Once it had been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

      Thanks for your question!

My wife’s 2002 Chevy Blazer was stolen and the next day My wife and daughter tracked down the thief in the blazer and pushed him in a snow bank where it sat for several hours running and in reverse before the cops came and released it to them. The temp in the truck was around 200. The next day windows fogged up and fluids leaked onto the floor board and the heat stopped. Is this the heater core or some other problem. The blower works great, the guages show temps rising to 200 plus but no heat comes out and the windows fogged up.

Plz help me out ..I need know what to do ..I don’t have much money ..

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 30, 2016 at 7:16 pm

      David,

Thanks for your question about your Mercury Sable. We can’t think of any way your leaking heater core could be related to your AC leak, it is probably just a coincidence. Our recommendation would be the fix the leak in your heater core quickly to keep your engine from over heating and causing more damage. You can use BlueDevil Pour-N-Go (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/pour-n-go-head-gasket-sealer-00209/) to seal that leak to keep your engine safe. When you have a chance later, you can use RedAngel AC Stop Leak (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/a-c-stop-leak-aerosol-00222/) to seal the leak in your air conditioning, then refill it to get that back to normal.

      Thanks again for your question!

        • BlueDevil Pro on May 17, 2016 at 8:43 am

          Amanda-

Thank you for asking about your Mitsubishi Eclipse. The direction of turning the heater on with the blower to the max, while performing the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer procedure, is to draw heat from the engine to keep it from overheating during the 50 minute idle. Unfortunately, if the vehicle is unable to idle for the full 50 minutes without overheating, it may just be that the leak you have or symptoms you are having are just a little to extreme for the product. There’s a small leak where my heater hose is clamped and connected to my heater core, will this do an adequate job in stopping the leak?

    Vehicle is a 1999 VW Passat 2.8l v6

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 30, 2016 at 12:09 pm

      Pat-

Unfortunately, BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer is not intended for that type of leak. If it were the physical heater core leaking then yes, we would recommend BlueDevil. However, due to it being the clamp connection and/or the hose, we recommend having the clamp & hose replaced. This should stop the leak and should be fairly easy to access and replace.

I have a 1985 camaro and it slowly loses coolant with no apparent sign of leakage on the ground or floor board. I replaced the intake gasket and still, I slowly lose coolant and the car heats up 200°+. The heat works fine, no odor or condensation on windshield. Head gasket?

The symptoms you have described are common when a vehicle has a blown head gasket. We recommend using our BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/) to stop any coolant loss. The reason you may not be physically seeing some of the tell-tale signs of a blown head gasket is because you are catching it early on.

Hi, I have a 2011 Cadillac and less than 2 months ago the heater core blew, fun fun! Well I just did it again! I’m 200 miles from home and the repair shop. I want to take it back to them, as it was over 1200$ to fix. I feel they should repair it! What can I do to safely drive it until I can get it home. I’m currently soaking up antifreeze with towels out of the floorboard.

    • BD Auto Pro on June 28, 2016 at 9:53 pm

      T Jackson,

Thanks for your question about your Cadillac. IF you have a leaking heater core and need to just get your car home, you can locate the feed and return heater lines in your engine bay. They should run into the firewall near each other and one should connect to the engine near the water pump. If you remove the hoses from the heater core and use a connector rated for the temperature and pressure of your cooling system you can temporarily bypass your heater core to get your car back home. Most auto parts stores should sell the correct size connector and clamps you’ll need to accomplish this.

      Thanks again for your question!

My F150, 2001has vapor coming into the passenger compartment. It overheats in stop and go traffic. I’ve had to turn on the heat to get the temp gauge away from the red zone. If I leave the air/panel off, it does not overheat. Returning to the time before AC isn’t something I want to do. There isn’t any apparent fluid loss. Will your product help prevent an expensive repair? The first mechanic I went to fix the problem said it sounded like a ‘flow problem’ and replaced the water pump to cure the overheating. That was not a cure. The vapor in the cab has started since then.

    • BD Auto Pro on July 16, 2016 at 4:17 pm

      Susan,

Thanks for your question about your F150. Based on the overheating and the vapor in your cabin it sounds like you’ve got a leak in your heater core. It is possible that you’ve got a blocked heater core which could cause the overheated problem you’re having in which case you can try flushing your cooling system with BlueDevil Radiator Flush (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/radiator-flush-00204/).

      Thanks again for your question!

Yes, you can bypass the heater core to prevent the leaking you have seen recently. However, if you do so you will no longer be able to successfully use your heater.

I have a very small leak in my heater core and I’m interested in trying a leak sealing product, but I want to keep my car for a while and I’m worried about short term and long term side effects. After the 50 minute idle is over and the car cools down, won’t the temperature differential of the engine cooling down cause the remaining leak sealing product still inside the engine to chemical weld on the inside of the engine and components (water pump, etc)? I read a coolant flush before the treatment is recommended. Is a coolant flush also recommended afterwards to remove the remaining leak sealing product?

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 9, 2016 at 10:28 am

      Ed-

BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer only reacts during 1 heat cycle. It will not coat the entire cooling system; the chemical weld that is created will only be formed at the leak point. You will not need to flush your cooling system after applying the product. You may simply drain the system and refill with your factory recommended antifreeze.

I have a 1996 ranger and the heater core has a leak. So I’ve by passed, but if I can seal the leak I would like to do that. Everything is already flushed out. So how much of the blue devil pour and go would I use and how do I mix it? Does it go in before the antifreeze? And do I do it with the car off and then once it’s filled up start it and let it idle for 50 min correct?

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 16, 2016 at 9:42 am

You will add your antifreeze first just leaving enough room for 16 ounces of BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer. Once the antifreeze has been added you will start the engine and slowly add BlueDevil through the radiator cap. Once BlueDevil has been added you should tighten the radiator cap and allow the engine to idle for 50 minutes.

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Van. In the winter in Minnesota, the inside of the windows (windshield, driver, passenger, rear) fog and then frost over and I am not able to see out. The van stays nice and toasty warm, but I can’t see out. I don’t see evidence of any leaks inside or outside. I never need to add coolant. How can I tell if it is a leaky heater core causing the fogging/frosting?

        • BlueDevil Pro on November 12, 2018 at 9:53 am

          Eric-

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Ram 3500. If you are not noticing a loss of water/coolant and the vehicle is getting proper heat, you more than likely do not have a heater core leak. Are you smelling a sweet smell, like antifreeze coming out of the vents? Try running the defroster on high with your window cracked and see if that gives you better results.

          Thank you!

I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan. In the last few days I have noticed a small puddle on the driver side floor, smell anti-freeze when I turn on the heater, have fogged up windows and only slight heat. Does that sound like a heater core leak? Which of your products will correct that problem? Will it clog up the thermostat?

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 1, 2016 at 9:01 am

      Richard-

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Caravan. Based on your description, it does sound like you are experiencing a heater core leak. We recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/. The product does not contain any solid or particulate matter, so it is a non-clogging product. Also, as per the directions, you will be removing your thermostat and performing a cooling system flush prior to using the product. I have two Volkswagens, both with heater core issues. The first is a 2004 b5 Passat in which I use G12 coolant. There’s no puddles and the coolant level doesn’t seem to be decreasing, but the heat does not work and the Windows are fogging badly. Would Blue Devil be safe to use with G12 coolant?

The second vehicle is a 1997 mk3 Jetta. This car has no discernable leak, but the coolant level sometimes slips below normal, there is a smell of antifreeze in the cabin, and the heat works but doesn’t get very warm.

Would your products help in these cases?

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 13, 2016 at 9:32 am

      Matti-

Thank you for asking about your Volkswagen Passat and Jetta. BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer is safe to use with G12 coolant and would be able seal a heater core leak, however, it would not be appropriate to use the product if you are not experiencing a leak. Based on your description, it does not appear that either of your vehicles are experiencing leaks. Thank you for asking about your Mercedes 280. As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minutes, you would be a great candidate for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/. Hi, I have a 2006 dodge stratus sxt and I do believe that I have a leak in my heater core. My coolant level seems to be fine, and I don’t smell or see the “green” any antifreeze in the cabin, but i do smell it when i exit the vehicle. Now I dont see any visual spots when I move my car, but my driving window does fog up, and there is a slight dampness in my passager side floor. I do have heat, but it goes in and out at times. My car never goes beyond the mid mark on temperature gauge, and am just confused on what to make of it.

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Stratus. Based on your description, it does seem like your vehicle has the symptoms of a heater core leak, although, it is odd you are not noticing a loss of water/coolant. I have a 1998 Audi A4 that has a small leak. About a 1 inch in diameter circle on the pavement after about 6 hours after running in cold weather and the heat turned up in my car. I just had my car in to the shop because it was leaking a lot of coolant and they told me I needed to have my heater core replaced due to the tubes (steel, I believe, part of the heater core) deteriorating. They moved a clamp back on the tubes to try to help with the leak. As I previously stated it is a small leak now. Will this product help me with this matter or is there something else you’d suggest? I would like to avoid the $1100 fix of having the heater core replaced. Any advice is much appreciated! Thank you!

Just doing further research, I think it might be an aluminum tube.

  53. Marilyn on March 25, 2017 at 9:45 am

Hi, we have had a variety of issues with our 93 Dodge Spirit in the last couple of years. It has a 4 cylinder and over 200 k. We had the radiator replaced for $400 a month and a half ago, and then the shocks replaced last month for $900.

But sometime in the last two months I started noticing the floor was wet on the passenger’s side. Then a few weeks ago, I heard something go hssss and then clunk as we were driving. But the driver did not hear it.

Then just in the last two weeks, we notice a sweet, unpleasant odor on startup coming through the vents and the car doesn’t heat very well. Also, the windows all fog up, especially the windshield. But the car does NOT overheat. Just to reduce wear and tear at this point, we’ve been driving without heat on.

I am guessing it’s a heater core leak as well as some hardware disengaging and falling off from somewhere (maybe caused by months of bad shocks?). Also there is corrosion on the rubber hoses and wires stripped around the various parts of the engine.

We also have very little money and have been offered another used car that’s in good running order for a really low price ($1000 for a 95 Chrysler Intrepid) that has been properly serviced over the years, but is not quite ready to sell since they want to ensure it’s in the best working order possible — so it’s in the shop getting inspected and serviced.

We do not want to sink any significant money into our present car, but we would like to get a little more use of it if possible, now that we just invested in the radiator and shocks in the last couple of months and since we don’t have the next car quite yet. I’m wondering if the problem is a heater core leak and loosened hardware — and would the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer be a good idea?

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Spirit. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer for your heater core leak. • BlueDevil Pro on June 5, 2017 at 9:22 am

      Lane-

We’re not sure what you mean by your question. Coolant is not designed or intended to make the engine or radiator dirty, however, jellied antifreeze or old coolant would indicate a dirty system. My question: If the leak is from a crack in the hose (at the core) rather than the core itself, will Pour-N-Go likely still take care of the issue?

    Thanks!

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 21, 2017 at 9:44 am

Thank you for asking about your C10. Hi
I have a Chevrolet Blazer 1998 and the bottom floor of my passenger feet feels super hot and there is an oily substance as well. There is also a weird smell in the car. Could this be the heater core?

    • BD Auto Pro on July 5, 2017 at 8:20 pm

      Gaby,

Thanks for your question about your 1998 Chevy Blazer. Usually if a heater core leaks it will leak onto the passenger floor board, so that definitely could be your problem. Engine coolant usually smells sweet and does have small amounts of lubricants in it so it could be the oily feel you have. There shouldn’t be any other engine fluids running into the cabin of your vehicle so if that’s where you’re noticing the leak, that is most likely your problem.

      Thanks again for your question!

I read conflicting information on using your product to seal a heater core leak. One page says pour it into the radiator and wait 50 minutes the other says I must flush my system first. Which is correct? Can I just add the BD leak fix to my coolant without removing the thermostat for a heater core leak or must I remove run 50 minutes, replace the thermostat and refill my coolant since I live in an area that will have freezing temperatures soon.

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 23, 2017 at 9:24 am

      Glenn-

We manufacture two different head gasket sealers; the directions are different for each. The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (32 oz./yellow label) requires both the removal of thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.
The product with the yellow label will give you best overall results as long as you can remove the thermostat and flush the system prior to use.

      Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 15, 2017 at 9:37 am

      Brad-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Silverado. For a leaking heater core, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). You would want to reconnect the hose so that the product is able to circulate to the heater core. You would need 32 oz. of the product to properly treat the vehicle.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee – heater core issue, cab smell and window fog at defroster vents, no liquid leaking observed
Before I pull dash to replace heater core are you suggesting I try to drain radiator, flush heater core and try your head gasket sealer by pouring it into my radiator?

This might prevent a replacement heater core job? If so, would save me a ton of time! Pls advise/many thanks

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Tacoma. For a leaking heater core, we recommend the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 50 minutes without overheating, and you are not losing water/coolant too quickly, you would be a great candidate for the product.

To confirm, I should be using the head gasket sealer, not the Radiator and Block sealer. Would it be beneficial to do a radiator flush before or after I use the product?

        • BlueDevil Pro on October 13, 2017 at 1:56 pm

          Josh-

That is correct. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would be the most applicable product to use for a leaking heater core. As per the directions, you would be performing a cooling system flush prior to using the product. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

I have a 2009 Jeep Liberty and I was told that the heater core needed to be replaced and I was told that it could cost over 1 thousand dollars to repair it….I don’t have that kind of money, so need to find a cheaper way to fix it…They couldn’t find the problem at first they did two pressure test and nothing showed that there was a leak I told them that the leak was on the driver side behind the front wheel of the Jeep they thought it was the ac dripping but I had put a pan under the jeep were it was leaking and when I check the pan there was antifreeze in it and I took pictures where you could see were the leak was coming from and he told me it was the heater core and that was behind the dash and was running down from the firewall and that. Then he tells me that he doesn’t do that work and have to take it somewhere else. I haven’t done anything as of yet and was searching the web and came a cross this website and just want to make sure that this product Blue Devil Pour-n-Go Head Gasket is that correct product that I should buy for this issue. I have a gurgling sound behind the dash of my 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 and I have to refill the radiator morning and afternoon, 1-2 gallons each time. There are no noticable leaks. There is no leaking inside or steam. I’ve been told it “could” be the heater core. Will there sealer likely help my truck?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 4, 2018 at 10:00 am

      Roland-

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Ram 2500. It is also possible that you are getting combustion/exhaust gases pumping back into the cooling system. You can use a “Block Dye Tester” to confirm whether or not that is the case.
BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will still work if your vehicle is getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading. If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull. Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly. Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system.

      Thank you!

Not that I’m trying to force your product, I feel that I smell a small amount of antifreeze, probably oozing onto the heater core, and might just be a tablespoon a day so it’s not significant with the overflow jug, but does make a slight hazing on the windshield as well. Have you had to add water/coolant or are you noticing a loss of water/coolant? Smelling antifreeze usually would indicate a leak, however, with a heater core leak, symptoms would include the passenger side floor board getting wet and/or fogging of the windshield. I just installed a new engine in my 2002 Jeep Wrangler. Now driving I notice antifreeze smell inside the vehicle. No leaks on the floor but I suspect that the heater core is leaking. I would like to find a product that I can add to the heater core to seal the leak. I want to isolate the heater core from the rest of the motor/radiator. I was thinking of using a drill pump and looping the heater core hoses in order to just circulate the water through the heater core. Will your project work in this manner or does it require heat? I don’t want to add anything to the new motor and radiator circuit.

I have since 6 month a second hand 2012 Chrysler 200 with 115.000 miles. I realized that the heater core is leaking, few drops per day but all the side effects are there: smell antifreeze, passenger carpet damp, fogging of the windshield. Which product and related guidelines would you suggest ?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 8, 2019 at 8:49 am

      Francesco-

Thank you for asking about your Chrysler 200. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (https://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/) would be the best product to use for your heater core leak. Based on your description, it doesn’t sound like you are losing antifreeze too quickly, so you would be a good candidate for the product. I used Blue Devil pour n go in my 1996 toyota 4runner which had a head gasket leak and a heater core leak. It fixed 90 percent of the problem, but I think the core is still leaking a bit. Is it safe to do a second application of blue devil?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 21, 2019 at 9:03 am

      James-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota 4Runner. Based on your description, a second application of the product would be worth while. It may just be that the leak to begin with was a little larger than what the product was intended for. A second application should seal remainder of the leak. I have a 1998 Honda Accord V6 and the heater works while the car is running and it gets pretty warm, but when I start driving it gets cool why is that? Would the Blue Devil help me. I have no leaking inside that I have noticed, but there is a smell in side my car could be antifreeze smell.

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 1, 2019 at 8:55 am

      Patty-

Thank you for asking about your Honda Accord. Based on your description, it more sounds like there may be some kind of restriction in flow, rather than being low on antifreeze. Otherwise, the heater wouldn’t work while the vehicle was warming up either. Is the vehicle overheating at all? Thank you for asking about your Kia Forte. Flushing the radiator is not a required step when using the Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer, however, dirty/contaminated cooling systems should be chemically flushed prior to adding BlueDevil. I recently had an a/c unit and water pump replaced with the serpentine belt and had antifreeze coming out of the head gasket cover when the belt flew off. Once it was fixed, I was never able to get rid of the antifreeze smell. But it would come and go… Stronger when I was a little harder on the engine. And I noticed the engine was giving off a lot of heat from outside the car. Now, 5-6 months later I am under the impression that smell is actually a heater core leak. Last time I got the oil changed, I was 2 quarts low on coolant. Is it possible that company cracked my heater core when they were doing the work with my water pump and a/c unit? I just can’t shake the feeling because the smell was never there before this happened. And then, it stayed and is gradually getting worse. I have a 2013 Nissan versa 1.6 SV with 118,000 miles on it. A belt slightly squeals when I start it (for a mili-second) and they also make noise when they get wet. At times, my car has died when going over a big bump. Usually when I am low on gas but once my car had a full tank when it happened. It just started happening this winter. Do you think this heater core issue will solve my issues? Or do you think I have bigger engine trouble? It’s obvious there are at least two issues, but It never overheats, check engine light isn’t on, it’s mostly just really noisy when im driving it…but really it has had this noise since I bought it with 30,000 miles. Just got a little more noticeable. Sort of sounds like light grinding aluminum metal under my car when roads are wet.(it echoes off buildings that I drive by otherwise I would never notice it)..It’s very quiet when it’s idle. Sounds like a good car. I will have about 1,000$ I can put into repairing it in a couple weeks if needed. Should I replace the heater core or repair it with your product and sell it???or keep it??? Before it’s worthless??? Lol single mom with 2 young kids at home…im not sure what kind of trouble I’ve got coming with this car. I want to do the wisest thing with the money to make it last another couple years if I can. But if it’s best to pitch it and find something more dependable then I’ll have to try that before winter comes back around. I drive for a living so my car gets a lot of use. Stops and starts, reversing half the time out of driveways… Any advice would be very helpful! Thank you!

    hello,

I have a grand Cherokee 2006 with a leaking heater core. Leaking is pretty fast. I filled the reservoir in the morning and all the water was gone in 3,4 hours. When driving steams come out of the dashboard and engine overheating. Can your product help me to solve this problem?

    Thanks,

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 15, 2020 at 3:58 pm

      Sina-

Thank you for asking about your Jeep Grand Cherokee. Based on your description, unfortunately, it sounds like you are losing coolant a little too quickly for BlueDevil to be of any help. The product would more be intended for a leak that is seeping or lightly dripping. Replacing the heater core may be your best option.

    Hi there,

Discovered a small leak in my heater core (Geo Tracker, 1991, driver side near gas pedal), thinking to disconnect the two hoses directing coolant to and from the cockpit and trying to seal only the heater core unit, without affecting the radiator/engine coolant circuits – does that make sense? Will your product be able to seal without being heat up to the engine working temperature? Would you advise such action?

    Thank you,
    Anton

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 29, 2020 at 12:00 pm

      Anton-

Thank you for asking about your Geo Tracker. Unfortunately, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer, the intended product for leaking heater cores, would not work properly in the scenario described. The product works by reacting with heat to from a chemical weld and needs to be added to the system while it is cold. I have a 1963 Ford Galaxie that just started leaking antifreeze on to the floor board under the heater box. Do you have a suitable product to fix it? It has radiator cap and a supply tank attached to the radiator.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 1, 2020 at 8:58 am

      Forrest-

Thank you for asking about your Ford Galaxie. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would be the appropriate product for your heater core leak. You would add the product in through the radiator cap. As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out, and you are not losing more than a quart of antifreeze during that 50 minutes, you would be a good candidate for the product.

      Thank you!

Usually add coolant every few days. Clueless woman who doesn’t know how to flush system or remove thermostat. Doesn’t run hot just wet floor & fog….. HELP

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 13, 2020 at 11:04 am

      Shellie-

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Ram 1500. You may use either of the Head Gasket Sealers or the Head Gasket Repair. The Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/pour-n-go-head-gasket-sealer-00209/) is an easy to use, less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. BlueDevil Head Gasket Repair (https://gobdp.com/product/head-gasket-repair/) is also an easy to use product that is 2x more concentrated than the BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/) requires both the removal of the thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.
The product with the yellow label will give you best overall results as long as you can remove the thermostat and flush the system prior to use. However, if the thermostat is difficult to remove or you would rather not then you can always use the “Pour N Go” Head Gasket Sealer or Head Gasket Repair. Per your cooling system capacity, you will be using 32 oz. of the product either way.

      Thank you!

i have a 2007 chevy trailblazer lt, from all the articles ive read it appears my heater core may be leaking. ive heard you mention to add directly into upper hose, or in the radiator cap, then you run for 50 minutes with heater full blast.. after this perocess do we need to flush the radiator? or just use car as normal and top off fluid when needed?

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 26, 2020 at 8:39 am

      Robert-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Trailblazer. BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer only reacts to heat one time (one heat cycle). Once the engine cools back down it is no longer active within the cooling system. You may leave it in or drain the system completely, it will make no difference either way.

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 2, 2020 at 9:55 am

      Beth-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Silverado. Unfortunately, it does sound like you are losing coolant a little too quickly for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer to be successful. If you are losing coolant too quickly, you will lose the product just as quickly, and wouldn’t be able to keep it in the system long enough. A hard part repair may be your best option.

    BDP Team:

I have an 04 Tacoma, and it appears that coolant is leaking under the heater core into the cabin. Unlikely that it’s anything else, but just today I did a bypass of the heater core coolant intake line directly into the outtake. There was still some leakage into the cab, but I suspect that may be the rest of the heater core radiator dumping slowly. I am going to observe it to see if it stops, at which point I believe that will confirm that it’s coming from the core. No other visible leaks in the engine compartment or on the ground. If it’s the core, I plan on getting your product either tonight or tomorrow. It’s a 3.4L v6, should I get the gasket sealer or the heater core variant?

My heater core is not where the leak is the leak is in hose and leaves very little on ground when I stop but I do smell it while I’m driving and the heat works but temp on truck goes up a lil bit when I have the heat on and goes back down~it’s just a tiny rise in temp~when I turn off the heat. It seems the more I drive it gets tiny bit worse each time. I have a Chevy 1986 1500 4wd truck can I use your sealant to stop the leak? And not in the reserve~so would I have to take too radiator hose off? How is easiest for me to put it in? Thank you

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 15, 2024 at 8:34 am

Unfortunately, BlueDevil would not be intended for a hose leak. It would be best to have the appropriate hose replaced, so that you are not continuously losing coolant and you can prevent any additional issues from occurring.
