How Can I Fix a Hydraulic Leak?

#driveyourlife

Hydraulic systems are used in a variety of different pieces of machinery and equipment today.  Hydraulics are often used in applications that need a significant amount of force to be applied, or when large pieces of equipment need to be manipulated or rotated.  Hydraulic systems can be found on heavy equipment or industrial machines, but also on many boats and other small lawn and garden equipment.

What is a hydraulic system?

  • A reservoir of hydraulic fluid or hydraulic oil
  • A pump
  • A series of hoses and valves
  • hydraulic rams or motors.

When one of the valves are actuated, the hydraulic pump draws fluid from the reservoir and pushes it at high pressure through the hoses to the proper rams or motors moving the equipment.  Since most hydraulic systems are designed to move heavy equipment or create high pressures, the hydraulic fluid is often at very high pressures, from 1000 PSI to more than 5000 PSI.

Due to the high pressure, and constant motion of the rams, motors and pump, it’s not unusual to find leaks in your hydraulic system even with proper maintenance.  You will notice these leaks possibly by a lack of power or force in your system, or more obviously in a fluid leak or drip.  Replacing hydraulic seals is a difficult job that often requires specialty tools and a detailed knowledge of the system.  Also, the close tolerances and smooth machined surfaces in the system make many of the components susceptible to damage if improperly handled or if the wrong tool is used.

How do you fix a hydraulic leak?

If you notice a loss of power or have a leak in your system, the best way to fix your problem is to use BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak.  BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak is a unique plasticizer that does not contain petroleum distillates.  BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak will absorb into the seals in your hydraulic system restoring them back to their original size and flexibility without clogging or harming other components in any
way. BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak will mix with the hydraulic fluid in your system for a quick, easy fix.

BlueDevil Products can be found on Amazon.com or at AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, O’Reilly Auto Parts, NAPA, and other major auto parts retailers.

Can your hydraulic fluid stop leak be used in the hydraulic oil system in a convertible top for a 1994 Mercedes sl500. How does it compare to the lucas hydraulic stop leak and booster. Thank you, Mike

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 28, 2015 at 11:21 am

      Michael-

Yes, you may use the BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak to seal a leak in the hydraulics for your convertible top. We have successfully used it for this in the past. You will only need to add about 1 ounce of the BlueDevil due to the small capacity. Keep in mind, it may take a few days before you notice results. Overall, the product carries a success rate of about 95%.

Feel free to contact us at 888-863-0426 with any questions.

      Thank you!

What about in my boat steering system. Would it help there? I have found a small leak in one of the lines which I will be patching. I believe it is a low pressure system since the cap of loosely fitted.

          Matt-

Based on your description, we actually recommend using the BlueDevil Power Steering Stop Leak http://store.gobdp.com/power-steering-stop-leak-00232/. The product is only intended for the rubber seals/gaskets, however, so it would depend on the type of material your line is made of. Thank you!

Will it work for 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee power steering pump leak? I’ve been told to only use the specified power steering fluid for this car, so I am bit concerned to use any stop leak fluids. Do you think it might work?

          • BlueDevil Pro on October 13, 2020 at 9:33 am

            Suraj-

Thank you for asking about your Jeep Grand Cherokee. Unfortunately, BlueDevil would not be able to seal a leaking power steering pump. Because of the extreme pressure and the pump pushing fluid through the system, the product would not be able to stay in the pump to be able to seal it. Replacing the power steering pump would be your best option.

            Thank you!

How much should I put in the hydraulic system on my 30 hp farm tractor? Will it stop the hydraulic cylinder leaks I have ?

        • BlueDevil Pro on February 8, 2022 at 9:06 am

          Chase-

You would use one oz. of the BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak per quart of hydraulic fluid in the system. The product is intended to treat rubber seals. If the leak is coming from an o ring or another rubber component, and you are not losing fluid too quickly, the product should be able to seal.

Your question to Blue Devil is from 2015; it’s currently July of 2023. So the chances are slim you get this; but I’d love to know if this product worked or had any problems. My main lift cylinder/drivers side is leaking big time.

No, BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak does not harden or thicken at any point. However, it is not designed to seal the type of leak you are experiencing. BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak is specifically made to stop fluid loss originating from rubber seals/gaskets.

      Thank you!

      • John on January 29, 2016 at 6:01 pm

I’m sorry, please explain why your hydraulic leak stop isn’t intended to stop a leak on a hydraulic cylinder? I’m at a loss of what it is intended for if it cannot be used to stop that type of leak.

        • BlueDevil Pro on February 1, 2016 at 10:37 am

          John-

In most cases a hydraulic cylinder leak is due to the hydraulic seals leaking. If that is the case, BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak will work to stop any fluid loss.

I have an electric log-splitter which seems to be leaking a small amount of fluid through two of the hoses. The leak is not at a fitting — it seems to be coming right through the hose. However the hose does not seem to be worn at all. What can I do about it?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 12, 2016 at 4:59 pm

      Keith,

Thanks for your question about your log splitter. If you are getting hydraulic fluid leaking through the hose then it is most likely that there are some hairline cracks in the hose and your best bet would be to replace it. You may be able to purchase a replacement hose from the manufacturer, or you can try getting a new hydraulic hose made at one of your local auto parts stores.

      Thanks again for your question!

    Hi
I have a 1999 Jaguar XK8. A portion of one of its hydraulic hoses that operate the convertible roof had been replaced and reconnected to the old hose with a fitting that goes on top of the hose’s outer skin. This fitting is now leaking oil probably because the skin of the old hose cracked (it’s a known problem). The system uses Pentosin CHS-11 hydraulic fluid.
Can your product help to seal the leak between the fitting and the hose?
Is it safe to use your product with Pentosin CHS-11?

    Thank you

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 10, 2016 at 3:09 pm

      Sam-

Thank you for asking about your Jaguar XK8. The BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak is intended for the rubber seals in the system. It will revitalize and recondition the rubbers in the system and swell, or expand them back to their original state. Yes, the product is compatible with Pentosin CHS-11. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

My boat steering hydraulic helm pump is leaking from the shaft. This old style helm pump doesn’t allow easy access to replace seals. Will this product come into contact with the shaft seals to stop the leak? If so can I just pour into the helm’s fill valve?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 27, 2019 at 10:12 am

Yes, you may add the BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak through the helm’s fill valve. You will be using one oz. of the product per quart of fluid the system holds, and should expect to start seeing results after approximately 1-2 hours of operation.

I have a Versalift bucket truck that has a 7 gallon hydraulic capacity. I used Blue Devil leak stopper to repair a leak appox 1 year ago with great results. I have now developed another leak in a different hydraulic cylinder and would like to add more Blue Devil leak stopper. I am concerned about adding more of this to the system for fear of having too much in the system. Should I drain the system and then add the Blue Devil leak stopper?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 18, 2019 at 8:56 am

      Frank-

You would be fine to add the product to your existing fluid. What you added approximately a year ago would have lost its effectiveness after about 2-3 hours of operation. Also, the product does not harden or thicken in anyway. It would not gum up anything or adversely affect the hydraulic system. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

Thank you for asking about your Mazda. You may identify a leak by seeing fluid dripping to the ground, or you can check the hydraulic fluid reservoir to see if it is low on fluid. Based on your description, we do recommend using the BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak. You will use one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system.

I have a 1997 John Deere 6400 tractor. Several of the hydraulic cylinders had slow leaks at the seals. This tractor has wet brakes and wet clutch. I used your hydraulic leak stop at the recommended concentration. It stopped the leaks. I then needed to take my tractor to J. Deere for a brake job (they had been going bad for a while) and they went nuts when I told them I’d added a hydraulic leak stop to my hyd. system and said they needed to check out the entire hyd. system because the blue devil additive had probably damaged it. What do I need to tell them? Is your hyd. leak stop safe to use in tractors with wet brakes and wet clutches?

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 11, 2019 at 9:58 am

      John-

Yes, the BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak is safe and compatible to use on your John Deere tractor as described. The product does not harden or thicken in anyway. It also does not affect the viscosity of the fluid whatsoever. The product works by revitalizing and reconditioning rubber seals/gaskets. • BlueDevil Pro on May 27, 2020 at 10:34 am

      Tom-

Thank you for asking about your CAT skid steer. The BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak would be safe to use, however, would have a difficult time trying to seal the pump itself. The product is more intended to treat rubber seals/gaskets. The pump may force the product away from the leak and not allow it to treat the leaking area. Replacing the pump may be your best option.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 6, 2020 at 9:46 am

      Gary-

The BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak would only be able to treat leaking rubber seals. If the seal was made out of another type of material, the product would not have any influence or cause any kind of harm. It does not harden or thicken in anyway, so the worst it would do is not seal the leak.

      Hope this helps!

Yes, the BlueDevil Hydraulic Stop Leak can be used as a preventative maintenance/measure. It will help keep the rubber seals/gaskets revitalized and prevent them from deteriorating. It is not one of those things where more of the product would be better. You really only want to use the recommended amount.
