How Hard is it to Replace a Rear Main Seal?

#driveyourlife

It’s Hard.

Replacing a rear main seal is time consuming, requires special knowledge of your vehicle and the use of special tools if you are going to do it correctly and without placing you or your vehicle in danger.

“You have a leak from your rear main seal” is one of those phrases that we all hope to never hear from your mechanic.  Usually, that is one of those phrases that makes you cringe because you know you have a hard decision to make.  Since it is such a difficult repair, it’s usually not something you can do yourself and your mechanic has to charge a lot for.  Replacing a rear main seal can be so expensive the cost to replace it may be more than you have to spend, or even more than your vehicle is worth.

When faced with a high dollar repair on an older vehicle it can be difficult to decide if it’s worth dumping more money into an older vehicle that doesn’t have much value.  There are a few things to consider when making this decision.

  • What is your vehicle worth in its current condition?
  • What is the cost of this repair?
  • Are there other major repairs need?
  • What is the vehicle worth in good working condition?

You may be surprised how much your vehicle is worth in its unrepaired condition.  Today, there is so much information available on the internet on how to repair many vehicles and the ability to order almost any replacement part either OEM or aftermarket, new or used from a wide variety of trading websites, Ebay, and parts wholesalers. This means that there are more and more people willing to pay top dollar for cars needing major repairs.

Car For SaleThe difficult part can be finding out how much someone is willing to pay for your broken car.  The best way is to check local listings and see what other vehicles in need of repair are selling for.  Often these can be listed as “mechanic’s specials”.  You might check your local newspaper classifieds, Craigslist or Autotrader.  If you have the time, you can also try posting an add for your vehicle in its current condition and see what offers you get for it.  If your broken vehicle’s value plus the needed repair cost is more than what the vehicle is worth in good condition, it may be time to think about selling it.  The good news is a vehicle with a leaking rear main seal is usually still able to be taken at least on a test drive which will help with the resale value.

Alternative Solutions to Replace the Rear Main Seal

Before you jump on Craigslist and put up a new add you should consider if there are any alternative solutions to a costly repair.  Most of the oil leaks your engine will develop are due to old or worn out gaskets and seals.  These seals over time can become shrunken or cracked and brittle do to old age, infrequent use or even regular intended usage.  Instead of replacing these old seals and gaskets, first try restoring the ones currently in your engine.  BlueDevil has a full line of oil stop leaks products designed to repair and restore the seals in your engine and is guaranteed to stop seeping or dripping oil leaks.  BlueDevil products will not clog or harm your engine in anyway and can stay mixed in your oil until your next oil change.

Before using Blue Devil Oil Stop Leak, is it necessary to change the oil first?

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 12, 2014 at 2:28 pm

It is not necessary however you must leave the treated oil in the system for at least 200 miles of driving (not consistent) after the installation of the product.

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 31, 2019 at 9:08 am

      Tom-

We would not recommend adding BlueDevil to a system that contains a different manufacturer’s product. Not knowing the chemical formulation of the product previously used, we would not advise mixing the two in the same system. You would want to change the oil prior to adding BlueDevil.

I have a 1998 Honda Accord recently told a possible main oil seal leak. I asked the mechanic about adding a seal additive. He stated he wouldn’t recommend as it would do damage. Is there a risk of damage with this product? And is it added to the total oil capacity.

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 3, 2020 at 11:40 am

      Connie-

Thank you for asking about your Honda Accord. There would be no risk of damage with the use of BlueDevil. The BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer works differently than the older oil leak sealing additives; BlueDevil does not contain any petroleum distillates, which would shorten the life of the rubber(s). BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer works while you drive by absorbing into the seal, slightly expanding, and revitalizing the seal to restore its size and flexibility to the original condition. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 13, 2020 at 10:00 am

Yes, the BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer is safe and compatible to use on your Dodge Challenger. The product does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not cause any adverse affects.

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 22, 2021 at 8:25 am

      Danny-

The BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer would be safe to use on your Pontiac Grand Prix. Given the age of the vehicle you may want to check as to whether it uses rope, cork or rubber seals/gaskets. Some older engines use rope or cork seals. BlueDevil will only work on rubber seals.

      Thank you!

        Hi
I have a 2007 Volts Wagon Jetta 2.5 Wolfsburg Edition
I’ve been told that I have a rear main seal leak my car other wise mechanically is in good condition.
The mechanic recommended not adding any type of stop leak to this vehicle as it would cause engine damage, and he also said that he doesn’t recomend fixing it either because of it being a high cost repair.
He suggested to just make sure that I keep an eye on my oil level. 🤔
Can you please tell me what you think the estimated cost of this repair would be for this vehicle , and weather or not do you think it would possibly be worth the cost to repair , and also what your alternate recommendations for this car would or could be ?
Would your blue devil stop leak product be compatible with this vehicle and would it be 100% guaranteed non harmful to my engines life performance?
Thank you for your time 🙂

Thank you for asking about your Volkswagen Jetta. Rear main seal replacement cost for this vehicle can range from $650-$850, as it is a very labor intensive job. My 2009 Passat Komfort 2.0 does not leak oil but I’m told it needs a rear seal for air compression leak.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 4, 2023 at 9:05 am

      Al-

The BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer is specifically intended for oil leaks coming from the rear main seal. You could use the product to help revitalize/recondition the seal, however, this wouldn’t really have an effect on a compression leak.

      Thank you!
