Does Fuel Injector Cleaner Work?

#driveyourlife

Does Fuel Injector Cleaner WorkDoes fuel injector cleaner work?  That is one of the most highly debate questions concerning modern car maintenance practices.  Some people say you should use fuel injector cleaner in every tank of gas you purchase.  Some say every other tank, some say every oil change, while some may argue once per year is enough.  There are also still a few that argue that it isn’t necessary at all.  Today many mechanics and small lube shops will often offer a “fuel system treatment” or “fuel injector flush” as one of their options any time you have your vehicle in the shop.  So who is right?

Today we hope to dispel any myths about fuel injector cleaner and help you understand why and when it’s a good idea to use it.  Our discussion today will cover fuel injector cleaner, fuel system cleaner and fuel system treatment as for the most part they’re all the same product with different names.

No matter what grade of gasoline you purchase or where you buy it from it is not going to be perfectly pure.  Some stations do indeed sell better gas than others, so it is important to remember who you are buying from.  For more information on top tier gasoline retailers you can checkout this informational page listing top tier gasoline retailers.  Even if you purchase the highest octane with all the detergents and fancy additives from the best station in town you are still getting a little more than you pay for.  These contaminates in gasoline are why almost all vehicles on the road today are still equipped with fuel filters.  Over time these contaminates can build up in your fuel system causing problems.  Just like having hard water in your home, you might not notice the problem at first, but every so often you’ll have to clean the hard water deposits from around your sink and shower drains.  Based on the average mileage of most Americans per year, and the average fuel mileage of vehicles sold in the US today, you will use over 570 gallons of gasoline this year.  That much gasoline can leave a surprising amount of contaminants in your fuel system.  Some of the contamination will accumulate in the bottom of your fuel tank, in the fuel lines, and around your fuel pressure regulator.  The real problem will come from the deposits forming on your fuel injectors.

Your fuel injectors are designed to deliver a high pressure mist of fuel into your intake air creating the explosive mixture it takes to power your vehicle.  As these deposits build up on your fuel injectors, they will start to malfunction.  Even if the injector isn’t completely clogged, any obstruction of fuel flow will change the characteristics of the fuel mist into your engine.  Fuel that is poorly mixed with the intake air due to a poorly flowing injector is more difficult to ignite and burns less efficiently than well mixed fuel.  This is the main problem caused by a dirty fuel injector.  This difficult to ignite fuel mixture is what causes the poor fuel mileage you are experiencing as well as harder starts, less power, higher harmful emissions and a poorly idling vehicle.

To return your fuel injectors to their maximum performance and restore your car to running like new, you need to dissolve these deposits that have built up on your fuel injector.  BlueDevil Fuel System Cleaner is specifically designed to dissolve the deposits that have formed on your injectors and in other areas of your fuel system to return your fuel system to peak efficiency.  BlueDevil Fuel System Cleaner is specifically designed to improve your fuel mileage, lower your emissions, and maximize your engine’s performance without damaging any sensors or other components.  Today’s fuels have come a long way in there purity and do come with some additives so we recommend using BlueDevil Fuel System Cleaner every 3000 miles to make sure your fuel system stays clean and deposit free.

I think I am going to use BlueDevil fuel system cleaner every 3000 miles

OK – your message is very nearly four years old – what is your opinion now – did it work>

By way of explanation, I need injector cleaner with every tank full of gas. I suspect a contaminant in my tank, and my next step will be to clean the tank – or maybe even get a new one. Wish me luck.

please help me. my car has a fuel problem it keeps shutting of while I’m driving. what is causing that.. the car itself always does a shocking action then a noise like it popping. Eventually it cuts and I start it bk.

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 30, 2016 at 7:50 pm

      Deborah,

Thanks for your question about your car. If your car starts up every time quickly after it shuts off then it sounds like your problem is either with your fuel pump going bad, a clogged fuel filter or a bad pressure regulator. The abruptness you described and the popping noise makes us lean towards a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter as low fuel pressure would cause a lean condition in your engine which could cause bucking or backfiring.

      Thanks again for your question!

My car is doing the same thing but not cutting off do you think the cleaner would work for me or is that fuel pump as well

        • BlueDevil Pro on June 24, 2019 at 9:53 am

          Taresa-

Are you saying your vehicle is making popping noise? Popping noise would generally lean towards a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter as low fuel pressure would cause a lean condition in your engine which could cause bucking or backfiring.

          Hope this helps!

Hi. My turbo is not kicking in until I hit by 2500 rpm. Started happening a week ago. Someone told me that this would/could solve it. Is that right?
    Thanks in advance

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 14, 2016 at 1:34 pm

      James-

The turbo can sometimes act up if your exhaust is restricted or plugged. If that is the case then BlueDevil Fuel MD Fuel System Cleaner (http://store.gobdp.com/fuel-system-cleaner-00202/) would be a great solution for cleaning the system and get the turbo functioning properly once again. If it is failing due to an exhaust leak or some other factor then you may need to look into replacing the appropriate parts.

      Thanks!

Could a clogged fuel injection system cause problems with oxygen sensors?

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 3, 2016 at 12:30 pm

      Kelly-

Dirty injectors will restrict the amount of fuel that is sprayed into the engine with every pulse of the injector resulting in a leaner-than-normal fuel mixture. This, in turn, can cause lean misfire, hesitation, poor performance and an increase in hydrocarbon emissions. Problems with the coolant sensor or oxygen sensor also can affect fuel delivery. A coolant sensor that always reads cold will prevent the engine from going into closed loop resulting in a rich fuel mixture and poor fuel economy. A dead oxygen sensor can have the same effect. So too, can a contaminated or sluggish O2 sensor. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

      Thank you!

You mentioned in the article that I lean fuel mixture may be the cause of low fuel mileage, but stated here here that a rich fuel mixture lead to low mileage. How exactly does the first work. I was thinking of using the cleaner to resolve a lingering poor fuel mileage.

hello, my car has been giving me a few problems lately. When I drive at slow speeds, (like 15 mph) my engine shuts off. I’ll put it in park and restart it and it’s just fine. I also believe it is using more gas than it has before, and when on the highway and going up hill it is harder for it to maintain it’s speed, so could a cleaner help this problem? It does not shut off when I drive at normal or high speeds at all.

Based on your description, we do recommend using the BlueDevil Fuel System Cleaner http://store.gobdp.com/fuel-system-cleaner-00202/. It sounds like you may have fuel deposits left in the system, causing you to not get the proper fuel mileage. The Fuel System Cleaner will remove fuel deposits while increasing vehicle performance.

I have been having problems with my car recently. Sometimes when i stop at a red robot the vehicle will just refuse to pull up when its time to go even when the accelerator is flat footed. Sometimes it just hesitates to pull even when m travelling. I have changed the fuel pump, put new plugs but all that has not worked so far. Could the injector cleaner help here

  9. Firoze on January 18, 2017 at 7:16 am

Hi, can you please let me know if “surging” when accelerating up a hill or on a highway could be caused by a clogged injector – which could be solved by your product? Essentially around town everything seems fine but if I give the car harder acceleration in 4th/5th gear, the car seems to accelerate in an uneven manner.

Also, I’m noticing the exhaust gases as being white.

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 16, 2017 at 2:09 pm

      Richard-

No, a fuel system cleaner would not help to clean your throttle body. The proper way for cleaning the throttle body would be to remove it and manually cleaning it using a degreaser specifically designed for fuel system components.

I have a question my car is hard for starting and when I push the gas pedal the sound from the engine is coming up like knocking sound , so this is came from fuel injectors ?
Thanks in advance for your response ?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 6, 2017 at 9:05 am

      Daniel-

The knocking sound you are hearing does not necessarily indicate an issue with your fuel injectors. A knocking sound from the engine can also indicate that there is water in the oil. We recommend changing your oil and seeing if the problem persists. If so, you may want to bring the vehicle in to a certified ASE mechanic for a proper diagnosis.

      Thank you!

    I have a 1700 ctdi astravan.
I have had a new Turbo, and air pressure valve fitted.
When i start up,she runs fine, until warmed up.
When i try to accelerate, the vehicle holds back as if i am about to run out of fuel, and have no acceleration at all ?
When i sit in Neutral and hold the revs at 3000-3500, the engine speeds up and slows down, making the rev counter go up and down?

    • BD Auto Pro on September 27, 2017 at 6:48 pm

      Paul,

Thanks for your question about your Astra Van. Based on your description of the problem, it does sound like you’ve got a fuel delivery issue. You could check your injection pump, especially the relief valve if it has one to make sure it’s functioning properly. The other possibility is to make sure the air pressure valve is allowing the turbo to spool up. If it’s stuck open your turbocharger won’t create boost limiting the power output of your engine.

      Thanks again for your question!

Interesting article, I noticed something odd with my 09 Jetta. Its a 2.5 5 cylinder gas car, has about 124K miles. Noticed whenever I start the car, there’s like a murmur coming from the muffler (like its going up 500 rpm and going down 500 rpm every 10 seconds). And when i give it throttle past 50% percent, it starts to sputter and lose power (oddly). Can I get some guidance?

i have 99 olds alero. a few months ago, i had driven home from work, about 12 miles (city driving), and stopped at a convenience store near my house. when i started the car, the it felt weak and was idling at only 500 rpms. i drove home, but each time i took my foot off the gas, the rpms dropped sharply back down to 500. a few hours later, it would not start. then, the next day in the afternoon it started fine. now, this past weekend, i stopped to get an oil change. after the oil change i started it up and was idling at 500 rpms again. i was able to drive it home, but at any stop is idled at about 500 rpms, though never stalled. since parking it at home, i haven’t been able to start it at all without giving it some gas, and as soon as i take my foot off the pedal, the engine dies.
the fuel pump sounds fine when key is put in the on position, and i just replaced the fuel filter, but that did not fix the problem. does this sound like a fuel injector problem, and if so, does it sound too late to use a cleaner?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 12, 2018 at 10:41 am

      Georges-

Thank you for asking about your Mercedes CLK 359. Yes, damaged swirl flaps could cause the hesitation you are experiencing when the vehicle accelerates. The swirl flap is closed while the vehicle is idling and will gradually open up as you start to accelerate the vehicle. The swirl flaps ensure that the air entering the cylinder is turbulent enough for proper fuel-air mixture. Replacing the damaged swirl flap should correct the hesitation.

      Hope this helps!

    • BD Auto Pro on November 8, 2018 at 12:34 am

      Orlando,

Thanks for your question about your 2016 Kia Sorento. Without a check engine light, it will be more difficult to find out what the problem is. If swapping the coils fixed things for a short time, you may have another coil that has gone bad. It is also possible that clogged fuel injectors are causing your engine to run rough so we would recommend using BlueDevil Fuel System Cleaner to clean out your fuel injectors and get things running smoothly again.

      Thanks again for your question!

My check engine light is on. 0710 code or something. 2001 Toyota Celica. First, the mechanic said it was a loose hose.

Then he replaced the oxygen sensor. Now he says it might be the fuel injectors. Sometimes there is a delay in starting the car.

Do you think fuel injector cleaner will solve the problem?

I have a 2017 Buick Enclave that has had issues with shuddering, especially under load (up a steep hill). A check engine light went on at one point and it was a fuel injector. That fuel injector was replaced, but the system was not cleaned. It got better for a short while, but now seems to return, especially on longer drives that are a couple of hours or more. Could this product help? I want to take it on a road trip this summer, but am wary since the problem becomes more pronounced the longer the drive.

I have an 02 Dodge rumble bee1500 with a 360 engine. I’ve checked the fuel pressure regulator and it’s not leaking. My truck will start up but won’t idle on it’s own. It started acting up months ago , kinda acting like it didn’t want to run but after a few minutes running then it would drive just fine but would do this Everytime after sitting for a bit and now it won’t idle on it’s own at all. My 2017 Hyundai Tucson has started hesitating when I hit the accelerator. I recently used some of the Sheetz 88 gas that is selling now. Could that be what’s doing it? Do I need a fuel injector cleaner to fix the problem? Thanks.

My 2008 Camry Starts when I push the button and goes off immediately. When I start it the second time, it stays running and works fine until i turn it off and have to start it again.
Someone said it might be the injectors that need to be cleaned. Could this be the case and if Yes, will your product work?

Hello I am so frustrated and broke. I had a problem with the starter got that fixed then my car kept stopping so I was told to bang the gas tank if it starts there’s a fuel pump issue replaced the fuel pump put gas in it has started leaking got the fuel pump looked at again and found out a hose wasn’t connected because of a broken piece from the fuel tank replaced the fuel tank and the car still won’t start. Someone said put fuel injector fluid in it and starter fluid but I just don’t know what to do. I have a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban 1500

    • BD Auto Pro on September 30, 2020 at 6:39 pm

      Leler,

Thanks for your question about your 2004 Chevy Suburban. We’re assuming now that you’ve got the started replaced that not starting means the engine will crank but it won’t fire up. If that’s the case, the first thing we would recommend is checking your fuel pressure. Most auto parts chains will rent tools like a fuel pressure gauge for free. On your truck there is a fitting on the fuel rail under the black engine cover where you can connect a fuel pressure gauge. If you turn your key on the fuel pump will run for a few seconds and should pressurize the line and you’ll see that on your gauge. If you’re not getting good fuel pressure or none at all then you know you need to keep working on your fuel problem either by replacing the pump or finding the broken line.

if you have good fuel pressure and your engine is cranking but still not starting then you’ve got another issue going on. That issue could be a bad camshaft or crankshaft sensor, something wrong with the computer or a few other issues that would probably be best to have a mechanic diagnose.

      Thanks again for your question!

Hello dear i have vw polo vivo sedan 1.6 when i start it glitches and i should start it again or hold the key for a bit longer then it starts then, once it started then i then start without glitches. Wen i drove sometimes it looses power then i should turn it off and start again. So now I’ve poured power steering fluid into petrol tank thinking is injector cleaner but i didn’t drive the car i immediate poured engine cleaner and full tank and the car drove nice for three days and on the fourth day the wen i try to start it it glitched and stop. Now the car dosen’t wanna start what can be the problem and what is needed?

      • BlueDevil Pro on November 5, 2020 at 10:40 am

        Moses-

Thank you for asking about your Volkswagen Polo. Did the temperature gauge seem to be fluctuating at all or indicate that the vehicle was overheating? Did you notice any bluish smoke on start up after the power steering fluid had been added to the fuel? Based on your description, it may be best to take the vehicle to a certified ASE mechanic for a proper diagnosis.

        Thank you!

    Hello.
My car shows a fault code P2188 (System too rich at idle bank 1) I’ve changed the O2 Sensors cleaned throttle body and MAF sensor but stil problem sustains, what could possibly gone wrong

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 15, 2021 at 9:16 am

The first thing to check is for any vacuum leaks, cracked hoses, or leaking o-rings. Make sure that there are no exhaust leaks upstream of the sensors.
