How to Fix a Transmission Leak Without Breaking the Bank

#driveyourlife

Leaking TransmissionA transmission leak isn’t the worst malady for a vehicle to have, but it’s still best to avoid them when possible. Most engines can hold four to six quarts of oil. Transitions, meanwhile, only hold one-and-a-half to three quarts of fluid. So, even a small leak can make a difference extremely quickly quickly. Not to mention, a leak can cost you between 100 and 200 dollars if you take your car to a shop (If you have to replace your transmission you’re looking at a lot more). Luckily, you can avoid a trip to the mechanic completely by following our guide. Everything you need to know about how to fix a transmission leak is right here! Additionally, BlueDevil transmission sealer is designed to stop transmission leaks in their tracks and get your transition back in working order. Find out more about our stop-leak product below!

Stop Your Transmission Leak Fast!

How to Fix a Transmission Leak

With a manual transmission, there are really only two things that can cause a transmission to fail prematurely other than normal wear and tear: poor driving habits and an improper level/type of transmission fluid. If you have issues with your automatic transmission, check out our blog on how to identify and fix a hard shifting automatic transmission

Where Is the Leak Coming From?

If you’ve noticed transmission fluid leaking from the front of the car or sitting under your parked car, you’ve most likely got a leak. If you’re thinking about fixing the leak by hand, the first thing you need to do is locate the leak. Here are the most common places you’ll find a leak in your transmission:

  • Cooler Lines
  • Dipstick tube O-ring
  • Input seal
  • Output seal(s)

Cooler Lines

The most common transmission fluid leak location is from the transmission cooler lines.  Every automatic transmission pumps the fluid either through a cooler in the vehicle’s radiator, an auxiliary cooler, or both to help warm the fluid when you first start driving and to help cool the fluid once it has reached normal operating temperatures.  The lines to and from these coolers are simply rubber hoses that can leak at the connection and crimp points. It is usually easiest to find where these lines exit your transmission then follow them up to the front of your vehicle looking for leaks. If you find a leak the best thing to do is replace the line.

Dipstick Tube O-ring

The dipstick you use to measure the fluid level in your transmission fits into a tube or standpipe.  That tube has an o-ring where it enters the transmission and as that o-ring gets old and dried out it can allow fluid to sneak past it and leak out.  Dipstick tube o-rings often leak intermittently and more when your vehicle is parked on a hill or slope. Replacing this o-ring is often a very easy do-it-yourself job so you may consider tackling it if you find this as your leak location.

Input Shaft Seal

This is the least common leak point in any transmission because it is hidden behind inside the bellhousing where it is safe from dirt, dust and other things that destroy seals.  If your input shaft seal is leaking, then you will see transmission fluid dripping from the front of your bellhousing. IReplacing the seal will require removing your transmission which can be an expensive job.  If that doesn’t make sense for your or your vehicle, use BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to restore that seal and stop the leak.

Output Shaft Seal

Leaking output shaft seals is a very common leak point.  If you have a transmission fluid leak at the output shaft seal you will see evidence of fluid leaks where your CV axle exits your transmission or where the driveshaft exits the transmission on a rear wheel drive vehicle.  Replacing these seals does not require removing the transmission so check with your mechanic to see if that makes sense for you. If not, BlueDevil Transmission Sealer can seal this leak as well!

How to Quickly Fix Any Transmission Leak

      Chuck-

Yes, you should add the proper amount of the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to help stop your leak. One ounce of BlueDevil treats 1 quart of capacity. You should notice results after about 100 miles of driving.

I just put a new seal in my 94 chev c1500 after about 20 miles it started leaking again. A friend says its the bushing n the end of tranny wore out and another seal or anything won’t fix it. With it being a new seal is this stuff possible to stop my leak I can’t afford a transmission right now and can’t find one at that just all honestly will this work fort truck?

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 28, 2016 at 2:28 pm

          Jonathan-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy C1500. As long as you are not losing fluid too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the product. Keep in mind, you will start to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

          Thank you!

Would this work for the transmission shaft seals on a Harley Davidson manual transmission?

          • BlueDevil Pro on May 6, 2019 at 8:48 am

            Greg-

Yes, the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer would treat the manual transmission on your Harley Davidson. You will be using one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system, and should expect to see results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

            Thank you!

  2. Brian on March 30, 2015 at 4:33 pm

Does it have any harmful effect to the transmission, like, should I flush the transmission after the leak is sealed and replace the fluid, so that the residual sealer is purged? I’ve heard of other brands gumming up in the gears if the oil with the sealer in it wasn’t flushed.

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 31, 2015 at 10:52 am

      Brian-

No, the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer will not harm the transmission or any other components in any way. The BlueDevil will not thicken or harden at any point. The Transmission Sealer can be left in for the life of the transmission fluid.

You should add 1 ounce of BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to every 1 quart of fluid capacity.

      Thank You!

PS – Is it sold in Canada?

We do not currently have any retailers in Canada that carry the BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer. However, the product can be purchased online through our website (http://store.gobdp.com/transmission-sealer-00236/) and shipped directly to your residence.

Recently rebuilt my 4 speed transmission in a 1987 C60 Chevrolet dump truck, transmission works great now, discovered a small problem, have a small leak that I cannot see where the transmission is into the bell housing. All of the seals are new, the leak is like a drop or so in a 24 hour period but aggravating, would blue devil be a possible solution to keep from pulling the transmission back out?

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 30, 2015 at 12:08 pm

      Tony-

Based on your description, we would recommend using the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer. You will be using one ounce of the product per quart of fluid in the system.

      Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 6, 2015 at 9:10 am

      Tony-

Thank you for your question. You will be using one ounce of the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer per quart of fluid in the system. If you have the 4 Speed Automatic, the capacity is about 13 quarts, so would be using 13 ounces of the product.

How to install sealer in a 2007 Toyota Prius? Is this a do it yourself job?

        • BlueDevil Pro on December 18, 2023 at 2:40 pm

          JoLynne-

The BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is an easy, do-it-yourself product. As long as you can locate the transmission fluid cap, you would be able to use the product. If the fluid level is currently at the max line, you would need to drain/siphon fluid out to allow room for the recommended amount of BlueDevil Transmission Sealer (1 oz. of the product per quart of transmission fluid). This would be the only reason you may need additional help. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

          Thank you!

  8. Frank on October 19, 2015 at 11:58 pm

I have a 2002 Audi tt Quattro 225hp 6 Speed Transmission. I removed the tranny to replace the clutch and separated the front differential from the transmission and replaced the 3 seals connecting them with OEM products, however I’m noticing some seeping from those seals. What is the capacity of the transmission fluid (synthetic 75W 90) so I can purchase your product and add the correct amount. The fluid runs through the transmission and differential. Will it be safe for this type of setup?. Thank You.

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 24, 2015 at 10:54 am

      Frank,

Thanks for your question about your Audi. First we would recommend checking the torque specs on the bolts you tightened around those gaskets to make sure everything is tightened properly. If you still have leaks after that, you can add BlueDevil Transmission Sealer along with the gear oil for your transmission and differential. BlueDevil Transmission Sealer will not significantly raise the fluid level in your transmission so you can add it safely to your transmission now.

      Thanks again for your question!

What is all the transmission fluid has already leaked out and the engine is seized up? Will it still help? The gear oil leaked out of the input shaft. They said they put more in but it just poured out.

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 4, 2015 at 9:09 am

      LMU-

Based on your description, unfortunately, we would not recommend using the product in this situation. It seems like you are losing fluid a little too quickly, and would probably lose the product before it got a chance to seal.

      Thank you!

  11. Joey Powell on November 12, 2015 at 9:16 pm

My 1994 Mazda B3000 pickup has a manual transmission. However, it uses automatic transmission fluid. The transmission has a capacity of three quarts, and it leaks at a rate of around one quart every 4-6 weeks. The vehicle only has about 105,000 miles on it, so there’s a good chance that it set idle for an extended period of time.

I’m interested in trying your product, by I need to know…

    1. Will it work on automatic transmission fluid in a standard transmission?

    2. If so, would it be able to stop this rate of leakage?

    Thanks.

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 7, 2015 at 3:15 pm

      Joey-

Yes, BlueDevil Transmission Sealer will work with Automatic Transmission Fluid in a standard transmission. Based on the capacity, you should use 3 ounces of BlueDevil to treat the Mazda. The leak you have is fairly large but not too large fro what BlueDevil is intended to fix. Once the product is added you can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 22, 2016 at 3:41 pm

      Eric-

Yes, if the leak is coming around any of the rubber seals or gaskets then BlueDevil will work. Be sure to use the proper amount – add 1 ounce of BlueDevil per every 1 quart of capacity; more is not better. Once added, you can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

      Deidra-

Thank you for asking about your BMW 530i. Yes, it is very important to use the product as recommended. Doing so will ensure the best possible results and give yourself the best chance of sealing your leak(s). You should be using one oz of the Transmission Sealer per quart of fluid in the system.

Hi, I have a Renault Clio Sport, The gearbox is leaking at the flanges where the two alloy casings are bolted together.

They do not use a gasket for sealing, instead they are assembled with Loctite 518 anerobic sealant.

Will your product work in this situation.

    Thank you

Thank you for asking about your Renault Clio Sport. The BlueDevil Transmission Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/transmission-sealer-00236/) is only intended for the rubber seals/gaskets in the system. Unfortunately, the product would not be able to seal the type of leak you have described. A hard part repair may be your best option.

Question: 94 f150 new clutch, peddle became soft a month in. Added brake fluid to top it off did this once a week then became an everyday occurrance, then I couldn’t shift at alk. Thought it needed to be bled but then noticed when you push the peddle to the floor I saw the fluid poor out the center of the bell housing. The seal is leaking correct? Would your product help at least get it home? It’s stuck in a parking lot about 5 mikes away. To be honest, this would be the cheapest fix for me. Not made of money so cheap is the only way for me. Thank you for reading!

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 5, 2017 at 11:14 am

      Jaelynn-

Thank you for asking about your Ford F-150. Unfortunately, it sounds like you are losing fluid a little too quickly for the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to be affective. Typically with the product, you would start to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving. If you are losing fluid to the extent that you would lose your fluid capacity before 100-200 miles, then the leak you have may be a little too extreme. A hard part repair may be your best option.

      Thank you!

I have an old bridestone 90 motorcycle that hasn’t ran in about 40 years and i recently got it running and its leaking a good amount oil coming out of the drive shaft on the transmission and i wanted to know if your sealant would work. They don’t make parts for it anymore so i cant replace the seal. The transmission takes about .6 liters of oil.

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 13, 2019 at 9:18 am

      Marve-

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended to treat leaks from rubber seals/gaskets that are seeping or lightly dripping. Based on your description, you may be losing oil a little too quickly for the product to be of any help. If the leak isn’t quite as bad as it sounds, you would use about half of an oz. of the product for a .6 liter oil capacity.

      Thank you!

Yes, the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is safe and compatible to use on the transmission you’ve described. You will be using one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system, and should expect to start seeing results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

will this work ok for a Tremec TKO600 5 spd?

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 4, 2020 at 9:35 am

      Danny-

As long as you are not losing transmission fluid too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer. You will start by adding one oz. of the product per quart of transmission fluid in the system, and should expect to start seeing results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

I have a 1950 ford f2 with a 4 speed non synchro gearbox. Would it be safe to put in?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 10, 2020 at 8:59 am

      Tony-

The BlueDevil Transmission Sealer is only intended to treat rubber seals/gaskets. Unfortunately, it would not have any influence on cork, paper or rope seals. Unless the transmission was rebuilt at some point, the seals used on your 1950 Ford F2 would more than likely, not be rubber. The product does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not cause any adverse affects.

      Thank you!

How much do I need to use of Blue Devil Transmission sealer on a 2010 Ford focus?

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 7, 2020 at 9:36 am

      Seina-

You would be using one oz. of the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer per quart of fluid capacity in your transmission. You can check your owner’s manual to find the fluid capacities for your vehicle, and then use the corresponding amount of product. Be careful not to overfill the system.

      Thank you!

    Hi There

I have a 1971 Triumph TR6 with a 4 speed manual gearbox and A type overdrive. The gearbox was recently overhauled however I now find that it has a leak from one of the the overdrive seals. Its a huge job to get to this and basically requires gearbox out. The gearbox is filled with 2.7litres (2.85 quarts ?) of Penrite HPR 30 engine oil which is SAE 20W-60. Is the Blue Devil Transmission Sealer suitable for this situation and how much should be used if suitable. Are there any negative side effects in this application ?

Regards Spiro Agius – Melbourne Australia

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 3, 2022 at 8:36 am

      Spiro-

Thank you for asking about your Triumph TR6. Yes, the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer would be safe and compatible to use for this type of application. You will use one oz. of the product per quart of fluid capacity, so about 3 oz. in this instance. You should expect to start seeing improvement after 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

I have a 2006 Ford Expedition 2WD 5.4L V8, is 15.9 quarts the correct capacity for the transmission? If so, should I just add the entire 16oz bottle of Blue Devil when the level is sufficiently low that adding it would not overfill it?

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 14, 2022 at 3:16 pm

      James-

Thank you for asking about your Ford Expedition. Yes, you would add the entire 16 oz. of BlueDevil Transmission Sealer for your 15.9 quarts capacity. Be careful not to overfill the system. Also, make sure the system is not too low, and top it off with transmission fluid as needed.

      Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 12, 2022 at 2:55 pm

Thank you for asking about your Ford Escape. You would be using one oz. of the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer per quart of fluid capacity. You are only allowing enough room for the recommended amount of the product. Once you’ve added the product you will want to ensure the system is topped off to the proper level, and be careful to have overfilled the system.

      Thank you!
