Engine Oil Leak Repair Cost

#driveyourlife

engine oil leak repair costRepair costs can be one of the biggest factors in the cost of owning a vehicle.  Buying a vehicle that gets poor fuel mileage can certainly cost you a bit more to own, but large repair costs often add up to be the biggest expense.  Some cars cost more to maintain simply based on their design.  For example, a rear-wheel drive car will cost more to maintain than a front wheel drive car because you will regularly have to change the transmission fluid along with the rear differential fluid while with a front wheel drive car you only need to change the transmission fluid as there is no separate differential.  Similarly, a car with a timing chain will rarely, if ever, need the chain replaced whereas a car with a timing belt will need that belt regularly replaced to keep the engine running safely.  When looking to purchase a vehicle, it might be worth looking into these types of things to help estimate future repair costs.

What Causes Oil Leaks? How Much Do They Cost To Repair?

Engine oil leaks can be caused by a variety of things, but most oil leaks are caused by either degraded engine gaskets or a bad oil seal. Engine oil leak repair cost is one of those things that is impossible to plan for in the maintenance of your vehicle.  No matter what make or model car you have, an engine oil leak can sneak up on you at any time.  Even new cars can develop oil leaks quickly due to material defects or manufacturing issues.

Besides being messy, oil leaks can cause serious engine problems.  The oil in your car is what keeps things cool and lubricated during normal operation.  Low oil levels due to a leak is one of the quickest ways to do major engine damage and end up with an even higher repair bill.

Since oil leaks can be so destructive, the cost of repairing the leak is almost always worth it to make sure your car stays running and doesn’t leave you stranded or worse.  Engine oil leak repair cost has a lot to do with where the oil leak is located.  The oil seals and gaskets in your car are made from relatively common materials and replacements are easy to find and often made by multiple manufacturers which helps keep the cost down to $5-$30 for parts.  The majority of the cost of repairing an engine oil leak comes from the labor for removing and replacing any components need to replace that gasket or seal.  For example, replacing a valve cover gasket to seal a leak there is often one of the least expensive oil leaks to fix as very few components need to be removed so the job can be done quickly.  On the other hand, replacing a cam shaft seal can be a very expensive job as it requires the removal of a lot of components including your timing belt and some of your engine accessories.

Depending on the type of vehicle you have, the engine that is in it and the location of the oil leak, repair costs can range from as little as $150 to as much as $1200.

The good news is there is often another solution to repair your engine oil leak.  Replacing the leaking seal or gasket in some cases is necessary, but often times can be overkill.  Gaskets and seals can sometimes have small leaks due to normal heat and cool cycles of your engine, underuse, or other factors that can cause the seals to dry out or crack.  These types of leaks can often be repaired using BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak.  BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak can repair and restore old or leaking seals to their original size and shape stopping oil leaks and keeping your engine safe.

Hi, I have a problem with my 2005 model Mazda Trinute. 4wheel drive. I arrived at home from town just to see as I parked my cat in my driveway, I saw that it was oil leaking all over. Dripping like a running water. I was shocked to seeit. What should I do now ? Can you help?

          • BlueDevil Pro on December 21, 2021 at 8:36 am

            Alice-

Thank you for asking about your Mazda Tribute. Based on your description, it would be best to bring the vehicle to a mechanic to diagnose and repair the leaking component. It’s possible a loose or missing drain plug is the cause for losing oil so rapidly and would be an easy fix. Driving the vehicle under this condition could damage the engine and would not be recommended.

            Thank you!

If you are not 100% sure where the leak is coming from, the best product to use is the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. The Oil Stop Leak is a universal application and would be able to treat leaking oil pan gaskets, valve cover seals, rear main seals, etc. As long as you are not losing oil too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the product.

            Thank you!

Hi I have 2001 Highlander and it has an oil leak. I noticed it after refilling the oil and driving about 50 miles out. How much is it to repair it and can it be done on my own?

          • BlueDevil Pro on July 1, 2020 at 8:53 am

            Meleane-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Highlander. The cost of the repair would depend on where the leak was coming from. If you are able to pinpoint the seal/gasket that the leak is coming from, you would be able to look up the cost of repair. If you are not losing oil too quickly, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. You can expect to start seeing results after 100-200 miles of driving.

I have a 2007 tahoe that’s leaking close to 2 quarts a day. Would this work? The shop said it will cost $700 to fix.

        • BlueDevil Pro on December 9, 2020 at 2:57 pm

          Brittany-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Tahoe. Unfortunately, it sounds like you may be losing oil a little too quickly for BlueDevil to be successful. Typically with the product, you would expect to start seeing results after 100-200 miles of driving. If you are losing oil too quickly, you would lose the product just as quickly, and wouldn’t be able to keep it in the system long enough for it to be able to seal. A hard part repair may be your best option.

          Thank you!

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak can stay in the oil for the life of the oil. You would be fine to add it right after the oil is changed.

      • Stephanie on December 10, 2021 at 11:21 pm

Hi I’m going nuts trying to get my 01 Montero Mitsubishi. Yes I know it’s old and I need to get a new vehicle but I can’t I’m a single mom that works to provide for us and take care of bills, property taxes, etc. So a new vehicle would be so nice to have its not gonna happen anytime soon unless I win the lottery. Anyway I was given the vehicle from a family member it had some electrical problems and an oil leak and it would have some kind of a rattling noise but if you shut the car off then back on it would stop. They had the gaskets replaced and thought it was all good. Electrical issues got halfway taken care of and then they knew I needed a vehicle so they gave it to me. I later found out it still had a leak when I had someone check it they found out the one of the gaskets wasn’t put on right and was bent and crooked so that was the reason it kept leaking. I later found out that that year of Montero’s if they had an oil leak would leak directly on to the alternator and cuz it too not charge and go bad. I found that out because as I was going to work one day I literally started loosing power and drained my battery out before I even made it to work. In the middle of nowhere on the highway at 5am it was an eventful morning. Long story short I’m trying to find out if Bluedevil would even work on an issue like this I know I HAVE to get the gadget replaced again but money is always tight and something always comes up that I can’t get it. Is there anything else I can do to fix this problem. Thanks for your time.

        • BlueDevil Pro on December 13, 2021 at 8:09 am

          Stephanie-

Thank you for asking about your Mitsubishi Montero. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak works by revitalizing/reconditioning rubber seals/gaskets. Unfortunately, it would not work for the leak you’ve described, as it will not plug in a hole fill in a gap. Having the leaking gasket replaced properly would be your best option.

          Thank you!

My car leaks oil when I’m parked I just took it to the shop and their say I need a front seal. My oil level is at 94 % and my next oil change date is in July with the leak I would say it will need to be changed by beginning of June. Keeping a eye on it until I can afford to get it fix my job requires me to drive and I don’t know what I can do until I can fix it.

Does your product help to prevent burning oil? I don’t have a leak, but my engine is consuming oil at a high rate (1qt/750-900 miles). 2014 Kia Soul. Thanks.

Thank you for asking about your Kia Soul. Are you getting any smoke/steam out of the tail pipe? If so, we recommend using the BlueDevil Stop Smoke & Engine Repair. The product will help to stop the loss of oil and helps repair components throughout the fluid oil system.

          Thank you!

          • Deej on November 18, 2021 at 2:33 pm

Yes. Some smoke. Definitely some carbon build up on the back of the Soul. And the catalytic converter is being finicky. I’m guessing it’s burning oil in the combustion chamber, sending the fumes through the exhaust system. Will using either product void any of the manufacturers warranties?

If it was red fluid that you saw, that would typically be transmission fluid leaking. You can check both your transmission system and oil to make sure they are topped off to the proper level. If the transmission fluid is low, we recommend using the BlueDevil Transmission Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/transmission-sealer-00236/). You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

For both applications, you will be using about one oz. of the product per quart of fluid in the system. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

I have a 2004 Lexus with 100,752 miles. My daughter said she smelled oil. I lost my sense of smell a few years ago … I can’t smell anything. I took it to the mechanic I always always always use, and he said “yes” he could smell it. But after looking at it, he said the leak was really hard to get to, and he’d have to remove the engine to get there. He said it would be really expensive. What do you recommend? Hi we just bought an 06 9-3t Saab. We did smell almost a faint burning smell but thought it might be from the ac no being ran in a while. Got it home and smelt it more on the outside. We felt under the car and my husband did has some oil come off on his hands. We haven’t noticed any dripping from the car just yet however we are afraid it might be some type of oil leak. It is not smoking or jolting at this time. We do know it’s been sitting on a lot for precisely two months without any routine start ups. Would you say this could be cracked or worn gaskets and would your product fix the leak?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 10, 2018 at 12:30 pm

Thank you for asking about your Saab 9-3t. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (https://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). It is not uncommon for a vehicle that is not regularly driven to develop brittle or cracked rubber seals/gaskets, which would allow oil leaks to develop. You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

Got a 06 Jeep Commander Hemi. When idling downhill and then accelerating at the bottom I get a blueish discharge out of the exhaust. I almost think its the Valves. I haven’t gotten a leak down or compression test yet. I change my oil every 3k and have to check and refill atleast twice in that timeframe. I do notice a little loss in power towards the bottom end, but alot of power at top end. No noticeable leakage on the outside of the engine and no puddling underneath the car.
no loss of power at top end. (Correction)

    • BD Auto Pro on February 12, 2018 at 11:13 am

      Shawn,

Thanks for your question about your 2006 Jeep Commander. Blue smoke usually signifies burning oil which would make sense with your high oil consumption. Since you see it after coasting downhill it could be either due to worn piston rings or bad valve seals. A compression check of all 8 cylinders should help determine if the piston rings are bad. If you get a puff of smoke when starting your Jeep after it has been sitting for more than a few hours that could indicate bad valve seals.

      Thanks again for your question!

Hi. My car has been leaking oil for a few months already. I have a 2004 Toyota Matrix with around 240,000 miles.
I have been adding a quart of oil, like every 5 days. Every time I add it, it smells like burnt when I turn on the car and makes dark smoke that comes out from the muffler. Car turns off some times while warming it up and have to restart it.
It also shakes when I stop on a red light and it feels like is going to turn off. After a day or two, it stops doing that and feels fine… then after 4 or 5 days it feels dry again and noisy, so I have to add more oil. I have a big oil stain on my parking space now.
Do you think my car has a fixable problem or should I just let it go since it may cost a lot to fix?
It has been a great car for almost 15 years.

After change my timing belt, I noticed when I brake…the engine oil indicator will turn on for several times. It will come out once but after that, no more. It is happened again the next day and I saw it – on until I stop driving . This morning, my engine sounds very rough and noisy. A day or two days before this was happening to my car, I saw some oil on the floor. Purple, red and dark spots. I suspect this must be related to `missing oil seal’ or…not so sure. What do you think and how much it will cost me later if I send my car to workshop?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 12, 2018 at 8:55 am

      Nur-

The purple, red spots you are seeing may be related to transmission fluid. You may want to check to see if the transmission fluid is topped off to the proper level. If the fluid looks low, and coupled with the fact that you are also losing engine oil, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (https://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). The Oil Stop Leak is the universal application and will work for oil pan gasket leaks, rear main seal leaks, valve seal leaks, transmission leaks, power steering leaks, etc. One bottle will treat 4-6 quarts of oil, and you would be using one oz. of the product per quart of fluid for your transmission. Thank you for asking about your Saab 93. As long as the leak isn’t larger than a seep or light drip, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak would be able to treat a leaking oil pan gasket. You should expect to start seeing results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

Hey, i had a leak of oil in HOLDEN ASTRA 2009 when i Park my car, as i looked under my car, engine compartment and transmission was wet with engine oil, mechanica says it will cost $1200 AUD because they need to open my engine and gear box and fix the leakage. is that true? Because its my 1st car, i have no idea.

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 19, 2019 at 8:58 am

      Sandip-

Thank you for asking about your Holden Astra. The estimate the mechanic gave you seems about average for this type of repair. As long as you are not losing oil too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (https://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). The product does not harden or thicken in any way, so it would not cause any adverse affects on the engine. You should expect to see results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

    Hi,

I’m putting more oil in the engine about every 500 for the last 2,000 miles due to a leak somewhere. After a basic check they were unable to locate exactly where the leak was. They said they need to tear down the anyone to locate, fix and reassemble… quoted about $500. Here are my questions.

    1. Is this considered a minor, moderate or major leak.

    2. Is it worth doing the engine breakdown now or wait till there is actually a breakdown.

    3. Will there or can there be major additions to the quote due to unknown factors.

    Thanks,

Thanks for your site. My car is 13 years old a 2006 Buick lacrosse. I never leaked anything until I had the have the water pump housing replaced. The shop did a poor job and now i have a massive oil leak that is destroying other components. (10 quarts over 300 miles) Will Blue Devil help here since the gaskets should be new??

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 2, 2019 at 9:29 am

      Marilynn-

Thank you for asking about your Buick Lacrosse. Based on your description, unfortunately, it does not seem that BlueDevil would be able to help in this case. The Oil Stop Leak is intended for leaks that are seeping or lightly dripping. From the sounds of it, you would lose the product before it got a chance to seal. Also, the product is intended to revitalize and recondition rubber seals/gaskets. It would not be able to revitalize a rubber that is new. A hard part repair may be your best option.

Thank you for asking about your Subaru Forester. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop oil from leaking from the head gasket. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is only intended for water/coolant leaks, and the Oil Stop Leak is intended to treat rubber seals/gaskets, not a metal component. • BD Auto Pro on March 4, 2020 at 10:42 pm

      Ethan,

Thanks for your question about your oil leak. If you’ve got a burning oil smell then you’ve got oil leaking onto your exhaust so the oil leak must either be above the exhaust manifold or in front of the exhaust manifold. We would recommend checking your valve cover gasket and your timing cover gaskets for oil leaks.

      Thanks again for your question!

  57. Kim on April 15, 2020 at 7:46 pm

I took my 2013 with 80K miles to get a routine oil change. The mechanic informed me that I had an oil leak and recommended that I bring my car back for them to add a dye in order to track the leak and then repair. He also said that the transmission mount was tearing because it was covered in oil. I noticed various small oil spots (1-3” diameter) where I park. This vehicle is only driven a few times a month for short errands. Do I need to fork out more at the mechanic for this repair?

    • BD Auto Pro on April 15, 2020 at 10:19 pm

      Kim,

Thanks for your question about your vehicle. If you’re seeing oil drips on the ground then you probably have a pretty good size leak. If vehicles are left unused for longer then 2-3 weeks they can develop leaks from the seals getting stretched or drying out. The real risk of an oil leak is a low fluid level which can quickly damage a system that is low on oil. If you keep all of your fluids topped off then you can continue to operate your vehicle with the leak. Since your vehicle has lower mileage, it may be worth repairing the leaks to keep the value of your vehicle high in conjunction with its low miles.

      Thanks again for your question!

I have a 2006 BMW 325ci that seems to always have low oil. It was low so we filled it up and not even two months later it is reading below the minimum line. There are no major leaks (except for a drop on the driveway every now and then) and it’s not burning the oil. Any idea on what the issue would be?

        • BD Auto Pro on July 30, 2020 at 9:34 pm

          Aidan,

Thanks for your question about your BMW 325ci. The only possibility for a low oil level on your car is if your car is burning or it is leaking. Most BMWs have a large shield under the motor with absorbent material on it so it’s possible your car is leaking oil more quickly than you realize. We would recommend removing this shield and inspecting your motor for oil leaks to ensure you don’t need a repair or to add oil stop leak. If you don’t have any big leaks then your engine must be burning the oil. Oil can either get into your engine past the piston rings or past the valve seals. Bad valve seals usually cause a small puff of smoke right when you start your car, which may only be visible to a bystander. Leaking piston rings will cause a puff of smoke when starting from a stop or accelerating quickly.

          Thanks again for your question!

Yesterday I went and did the oil change but the place that I took it the employee said that the car has three leaks, one is the oil fluid leak, second is the transmission cooler lines fluid leak and third the RF axle fluid leak. Is there another way that it can be fixed without getting to the extent of taking to a repair shop? right now I can’t afford to pay big repairs 😕😬. I would deeply appreciate it if you can help me. thank you so much for your help in advance.

What would happen if someone put the blue devil oil leak in their transmission fluid. my boyfriend thought he was helping me and doesn’t know anything about cars. I figured he couldn’t get the oil location wrong since its marked oil, but he put it in the transmission fluid.

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 3, 2020 at 8:20 am

      Sarah-

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak will not cause any harm to the transmission, as the product does not harden or thicken in any way. The bigger concern would be whether the system was thusly overfilled by adding the product to a full fluid system. You should check to make sure that the system is not overfilled and remove any extra fluid.

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 4, 2021 at 2:14 pm

      Deb-

Thank you for asking about your Nissan Armada. The clicking sound you are hearing is more than likely due to the oil level being low. Low oil levels could cause clicking as components would not be getting the proper lubrication, and could cause them to fail. We recommend bringing the vehicle to a certified ASE mechanic to properly diagnose where the oil loss is coming from and keep from requiring more expensive repairs down the road.

I just bought a used Pontiac Montana Sport. There is a bad smell of gas when I drive it that I did not smell on test drive and oily gassy smelling leaks left on pavement under car. The previous owner claims he did not experience this issue. Any idea if I can use your product to fix the probelm?

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 25, 2022 at 1:46 pm

      Emily-

Thank you for asking about your Pontiac Montana. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended for leaks that are seeping or lightly dripping. As long as you are not losing oil too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the product. You should expect to start seeing results after 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

We bought a 2004 chevy silverado from a private owner for 9000.00. Nothing was ever said about the truck leaking oil, but now it is leaking oil. I changed the oil 9 days ago and now it has leaked out. I am worried that I bought someone else’s problem and got ripped off. What do you think I need to do? It also has a 7 inch lift on it. Should I put the money into it and have something nice to drive for my grandson or dump it? Also the 4 wheel drive needs to be fixed.

      Carolyn-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Silverado. Ultimately, you’ll have to decide if it is worth the investment. Oil leaks are a very serious matter and must be addressed immediately before it leads to more problems or irreversible damage. Based on your description, it would be worth trying the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. The product works by revitalizing/reconditioning rubber seals and gaskets. You should expect to start seeing results after 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!
