Diesel Head Gasket Repair

#driveyourlife

Diesel Head GasketDiesel engines can be more prone to head gasket failure than other types of engines.  Diesel head gasket repair can also be more complicated that other head gasket repairs due to the complexity of a diesel engine and the extra work involved in the repair.  Diesel head gasket repair also often has to be done specifically at a specialty diesel engine shop or dealership which can charge higher labor rates which also will add to the cost and complexity of the job.

Diesel engines can blow a head gasket just like a gasoline engine.  Diesel engines also have higher combustion pressures during normal operation so a diesel engine head gasket leads a much more difficult life.  A gasoline engine relies on a spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture so the pressures and temperatures are limited.  If they get too high, the fuel/air mixture ignites on its own, called knocking and can cause damage to the head gasket.  On the other hand, a diesel engine operates because the intake air charge is so hot that when the fuel is injected into the cylinder it combusts due to the high heat so no spark is needed.

To make sure the air charge is heated enough to run, some diesel vehicles will utilize glow plugs or intake air heaters during startup or cold weather.  The one thing every diesel engine does to help heat up the intake air charge is to have a relatively high compression ratio.  The more the air is compressed by the piston, the hotter it will get so most diesel engines have compression ratios at least about 15:1 but sometimes upwards of 20:1!  On top of these high compression ratios, many diesel motors have turbo charges adding even more pressure.  Once all this air is stuffed into a tiny combustion chamber, pressures are already extremely high putting lots of stress on the head gasket.  Once you add the fuel and it ignites, pressure skyrocket up to as much as 2000 PSI or higher!

These high pressures put lots of stress on the head gasket in your diesel motor.  Most diesel motors are designed to last for lots of miles since they are usually relatively low revving engines due to the longer stroke.  To help make sure the head gaskets last as long as the rest of the motor, many diesel engine manufacturers have added an increased number of head bolts or used exotic materials in their head gaskets to help them last longer, but many head gaskets will fail on diesel engines even with normal use.

Due to the complexity of a Diesel engine, head gasket replacements can often be expensive jobs.  The job is often more complicated due to the extra equipment on diesel engines like the high-pressure injection pump and turbocharger, and the mechanics completing the job will often charge more for their services.

In order to avoid paying these high costs for replacing your diesel head gasket, consider repairing your head gasket instead.  BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is a non-particulate sealing agent that you can add to your vehicle’s cooling system.  This sealing agent will bond to your current head gasket at the leak point until the leak is permanently sealed stopping your head gasket leak and keeping your engine running.  BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer can hold up to the high pressures in your diesel engine and keep it running properly.

Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop water pump leaks. A hard part repair may be your best option.

I have a 2000 Isuzu FTR truck with a 7.8 Isuzu 6 cylinders inline engine consuming a bit of coolant through the head gasket daily(like half a gallon after 10 or 12 hours using it).
Does this product work for this type of problem?
How much product should I use for this engine?
Should I put it straight up on the radiator after cooling down? Or how do I apply it?
      Thanks!

      • BlueDevil Pro on July 15, 2020 at 11:51 am

        Ben-

Yes, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would be able to seal the type of leak you’ve described. As we are unable to look up the cooling system capacity for your vehicle, there is a cooling system capacity table on the back of the bottle, below where the directions are, which would show you how much product to use for your cooling system. If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there; do not pour it into the reservoir. It may be added into the hose or the opening on the radiator. Once BlueDevil has been added, reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

        Thank you!

Will this work for a 65 case crawlerHave a leak in a cup buster chamber does pressurizing my cooler just got a 188 motor diesel motor same as a 207 diesel

      • BlueDevil Pro on January 20, 2021 at 8:15 am

        Justin-

Yes, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is safe and compatible to use on your Case Crawler. As long as the equipment can maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minute run, you would be a good candidate for the product.

        Thank you!

I have an 08 ford 6.4 powerstroke with a bad head gasket that shoves compression into the cooling system and coolant out of the overflow under higher Rpms. Will this product work for my situation?

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 12, 2017 at 10:01 am

      Regan-

Thank you for asking about your Ford with 6.4 Powerstroke Diesel. Normally on gasoline engines we recommend pulling the spark plug from the affected cylinder to help relieve pressure and allow BlueDevil to create a permanent seal.  However, as you know you would be unable to do this on a diesel engine as it has glow plugs rather than spark plugs.   How quickly is the pressure building up in the cooling system? Please contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 so that we an get a better understanding of the vehicle’s condition and be able to make any appropriate recommendations.

      Thank you!

BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (https://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/) works well in diesel engines. We have had a lot of success in using it in diesel trucks in the past. Based on the cooling capacity, you will need to add 1.5 bottles of BlueDevil for a proper treatment.

I have a 2014 semi with Mx 13 paccar engine system holds 12 gallons. It’s putting exhaust pressure into system is what Pete told me and forcing coolant out of overflow. Will this work and do I need the pour and go or the 3 day process with draining and removing thermostat?

      • BlueDevil Pro on August 10, 2020 at 8:50 am

        Shannon-

As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 50 minutes without overheating or stalling out, and you’re not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minute run, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. You may use either of the Head Gasket Sealers or the Head Gasket Repair. The Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/pour-n-go-head-gasket-sealer-00209/) is an easy to use, less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. BlueDevil Head Gasket Repair (https://gobdp.com/product/head-gasket-repair/) is also an easy to use product that is 2x more concentrated than the BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/) requires both the removal of the thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.
The product with the yellow label will give you best overall results as long as you can remove the thermostat and flush the system prior to use. However, if the thermostat is difficult to remove or you would rather not then you can always use the “Pour N Go” Head Gasket Sealer or Head Gasket Repair. The products may be added with fresh antifreeze or water. Based on your cooling capacity, you should apply 3.5 quarts of BlueDevil.

        Thank you!

Hi I have a 2003 f250 super duty diesel with a 6.0 engine. I’m unsure if it is a head gasket leak, but everything we see points to that being the problem. Smoke from the exhaust, loss of coolant, just changed radiator, lack of power, sudden condensation in oil cap. I have been told this product works wonders and I will be able to drive my truck 15,000 no problems. I would like to know how much I will need considering I thought it was one bottle and I see you are suggesting 1.5 bottles to some vehicles. Also is it mandatory we remove the thermostat and is keeping the heater on going to be permanent or just for the process?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 18, 2018 at 10:15 am

      Yvonne-

Thank you for asking about your Ford F-250 6.0 Turbo Diesel. The cooling system in this vehicle is roughly 7 gallons, so you would need approximately 2 bottles of the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (32 oz. yellow label). Yes, removing the thermostat is a required step in performing the BlueDevil procedure. You will put the heater on, blower on the max, and leave it on for the entire 50 minute idle. You would not need to leave the heater on going forward after the process is completed.

      Thank you!

Thermostat is one piece and can’t be removed on 6.0. Any other recommendations

        • BlueDevil Pro on August 31, 2018 at 9:09 am

          Green-

The best way to get around the thermostat housing is by taking the thermostat and modifying it so that the middle piece does not close; you may remove this piece or gut the middle of the thermostat. By doing so you will create a free flow and still be able to have the full housing installed. The thermostat should remain “open” while BlueDevil circulates through the system. Once the BlueDevil procedure is complete you will need to replace the thermostat.

We tried to use the steel seal because I didn’t realize there were different sealants for diesel an gas. Obviously it didn’t work. What is your recommendation? Should i try this product or will it do more damage.
    Thanks Kasey

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 8, 2018 at 8:48 am

      Kasey-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy 2500hd Duramax Diesel. As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during the 50 minute run, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. We recommend thoroughly flushing the cooling system prior to use, to get rid of any of the contaminants from the product you previously used. Be sure to follow the cooling system capacity table on the back of the bottle to ensure the proper amount of product is used.

So is there a different or special kind of sealer I need since it is only oil problem so far (lossing about half quart every 3-5 days) and have no oil and water mix so far (no cream sludge). What do YOUR experts say???

We have Case Magnum 245 tractor 248 hp diesel. Will the head gasket sealer work in this application?
    Small gasket leak present
    8.3 L 6 cylinder
    Compression 17.5:1
    Coolant 24 quarts
Consolidated Diesel Corp Engine. That was a joint venture between Cummins and Case

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 14, 2018 at 9:05 am

      John-

Yes, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (https://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/) is safe and compatible for the application you have described. For a 6 gallon system, you would be using 48 oz. of the product, 1 1/2 bottles. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

      Thank you!

Will this work on a 6.7 cummins? At shutdown overflow reservoir bubbles, and seems to overflow some during operation. Coolant does not return to radiator.

2005 6.0 Powerstroke. Looking to try this, adlfter 50 minutes thermostat removed and heater on high. What recommended ?
Does truck temp need to be at operating temp? Cold? Just idle or high idle?
    Thanks

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 28, 2019 at 9:14 am

      John-

The process should be started when the engine is cold. Once the 50 minute idle is complete, shut the vehicle off and allow it to cool down. We recommend at least 2 hours of a cool down to get your regular 50/50 mix back in and to re-install the thermostat.

      Thank you!

      • Paul on January 29, 2019 at 10:44 pm

After the cool down do you need to flush system before putting the 50/50 and tstats back in.

        • BlueDevil Pro on January 30, 2019 at 8:35 am

          Paul-

It is not necessary to flush the system after the BlueDevil procedure. You may simply drain the system and refill it with your regular 50/50 mix.

          Thank you!

I have a Ford 1716 diesel tractor with a coolant leak ,have tried silver seal in, it slowed the leak down but still leaks .Its actually looks like it’s leaking between the block and the transmission at the top of the engine block , I am trying to keep from splitting the tractor in half to see if it’s the soft plugs . And it only leaks after it runs for about 5 minutes or builds up pressure. Any information would be appreciated.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 1, 2019 at 1:21 pm

      Bill-

Thank you for asking about your Ford Diesel Tractor. As long as the tractor can maintain idle for a full 50 minutes, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minute run, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. Being that a different manufacturer’s product was used, you would want to thoroughly flush the cooling system prior to using BlueDevil.

I have a 2002 Chevy 6.6 LB7 Duramax. The question I have is where do I put the product in cause I don’t have a radiator cap and I don’t know where to put the product in. I really need this to work cause if I take it to the shop it’s gonna be a $3,000 to fix.

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 7, 2020 at 7:57 am

      Branden-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy.

      Thank you!

I have a 2013 Volvo with the Volvo engine here is the problem it has diesel mixing in with the coolant but the truck is not running hot or anything but it is losing the coolant as well can you tell me what cause that to happen

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 25, 2021 at 2:49 pm

      Jeremy-

Thank you for asking about your Volvo. If fuel is getting into the coolant, it would mean the injector cups are cracked. It would also mean you have a cracked head, which would explain the loss of coolant you are experiencing, as well. Unfortunately, a hard part repair may be your best option.

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 5, 2021 at 8:28 am

      Mike-

Thank you for asking about your Ford F-350. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer does not contain any solid or particulate matter, so it is a non-clogging product. As long as the vehicle will maintain idle for the full 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out, and you are not losing more than about a quart of water/coolant during that 50 minute run, you would be a good candidate for the product. • BlueDevil Pro on April 26, 2022 at 8:33 am

          Duane-

Thank you for asking about your Ford. Unfortunately, we would not recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer in this instance. We do not manufacture a product intended to stop oil from getting into the coolant, as the Head Gasket Sealer is only intended for water/coolant leaks. Replacing the head gaskets may be your best option.

  38. Bruce on February 13, 2024 at 3:34 pm

I have a 2011 Duramax 6.6 and there appears to be a small leak in head gasket causing a pressure build up in coolant (bubbles in reservoir when running) and therefore expelling coolant. Will your product be able to address this leak and give me some time to schedule a head gasket replacement project?

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 15, 2024 at 8:53 am

      Bruce-

Thank you for asking about your Duramax. Have you noticed any white smoke/steam coming out of the tail pipe or do you have water/coolant mixing in with the engine oil? The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is specifically intended for water/coolant leaks, so if you are only currently losing coolant out of the reservoir because of the overpressurization, unfortunately, it would not be a good candidate for the product at this point.

      Thank you!
