Blown Head Gasket Repair Procedure

#driveyourlife

blown head gasketSo you’ve had the misfortune of getting a blown head gasket on your car or truck.  Once you have properly diagnosed the problem, either through a trusted mechanic, seeing signs of a blown head gasket your next step is to decide how to fix your blown head gasket.

Options for fixing a blown head gasket:

  1. Take it to a mechanic
  2. Do it yourself
  3. Use BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer

Take it to a Mechanic

This is your best option for getting your head gasket repaired the right way the first time without doing any more damage to your engine.  An experienced mechanic will know enough about your vehicle to know the procedure for disassembling your engine, how to check other components for damage, and how to get everything back together so your engine can run smoothly again.

Do it yourself

Many vehicle repairs can be done with a set of hand tools and limited knowledge about your vehicle, especially with so many how-to videos available on the internet.  Repairing a head gasket isn’t a job that fits into this category.  Here, we will outline the basic steps to replace a blown head gasket, but we only suggest attempting this job if you’ve got the right tools and the knowledge and experience to get the job done.

Blown Head Gasket Repair Procedure:

  1. Raise and support the car securely.  You will need to get underneath the car a few times to do things like drain coolant, remove exhaust components and possibly remove a few accessories.
  2. The first part of the job will include removing everything from the cylinder heads.  This will include disconnecting and possibly removing the battery, draining the coolant, removing the engine belt and accessories, and removing the intake and exhaust manifolds.  During this step, make sure to label all hoses and electrical connectors and put bolts and nuts for components in individually labeled baggies.  It can also be a good idea to keep a notebook of hints to help you put things back together.
  3. Once you’ve got things stripped down to just the engine, it’s time to remove the valve covers and timing cover so you can remove the timing chain or timing belt.  Make sure you fully understand the cam timing procedure to make sure you don’t damage the pistons or the valves during the process.  This is the most difficult part of the process so be careful and take your time!
  4. Remove the cylinder head by removing all the head bolts and carefully lifting the head off of the engine block being careful not to damage either surface.  Once you’ve got the head off it’s a good idea to send it off to a machine shop to be inspected to make sure it is ready to be reinstalled.  Similarly, check the block for flatness, cracks or other problems that would cause things to leak again.
  5. Now it’s time to put everything back together!  It’s important to understand the head bolt torquing procedure and to find out if the head bolts are torque to yield bolts that need to be replaced, or if you can reuse your old bolts.  One the heads are properly installed, you simply reverse your disassembly procedure being careful that the cam and crank timing is set correctly and all new gaskets are used.

BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer

If the cost of a mechanic doesn’t make sense for your car and that procedure sounds scary, you do have another option!  BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer can seal the leak in your head gasket quickly and easily without any disassembly of your engine.  Try reading through our directions to see how easy BlueDevil Pour-N-Go is to use!BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer

I have bought a can of the head gasket repair. I have a 1997 Lincoln Mark 8 without an access to the radiator other then the overflow container. Do I pour the bottle for one minute in the overflow tank, that is low right now with fluid? Do I remove a radiator hose? do I fill up the overflow tank first? Please let me know how to apply your product, thank you, Harry at harrycelder@msn.com

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 12, 2014 at 3:51 pm

If your vehicle has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring it through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold, you may add the product through the top radiator hose. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

Feel free to contact us with any further questions.

      • rolando on January 2, 2015 at 1:10 am

I think I did it wrong will that be an issue i did it thru the reservior/overflow do I need to do it again ?

        • BlueDevil Pro on January 2, 2015 at 12:30 pm

          Rolando-

You may still be alright. However, if you are still getting the same symptoms, instead of pouring it through the reservoir/overflow with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

Feel free to contact us with any further questions.

          Thanks,

when i use blue devil head gasket sealr on my car how long until i add up coolant agin or does it need to be flush after using the product or can you mix the blue devil and coolant togheter

After the BlueDevil process is complete (after the idle) you should allow the engine to cool down for at least 2 hours. Once it has cooled you may drain the system down to add your antifreeze.

I have a 1998 Cadillac deville , I have the overheating issue when I’ve been driving for long distances. Went to my trusted Mechanic and was diagnosed with a blown head gasket. My only question is I don’t have a radiator cap to pour it in to. Do pour it in my coolant tank?

If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

Hello, my engine overheats after ten minutes 🙁 how can I use this product? I really need to fix my overheating issue

          • BlueDevil Pro on October 20, 2020 at 2:43 pm

            Belinda-

Unfortunately, if the vehicle is overheating after only ten minutes of running, the leak you have or the symptoms you’re having are a little too extreme for what BlueDevil would be able to repair. Replacing the head gasket may be your best option.

            Thank you!

            Marquita-

In order to get the benefit of using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer, the vehicle would need to be able to idle for a full 50 minutes. If the vehicle is unable to start, unfortunately, it would not be a good candidate for the product. A hard part repair may be your best option.

With the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (https://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/), you would be flushing the cooling system and running the product with only water in the system. With the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer (https://store.gobdp.com/pour-n-go-head-gasket-sealer-00209/), you may run that with your existing antifreeze, 50/50 mix or just plain water. Thank you for your support my dodge avenger 2012 has an over heating issue ,I brought it to the mechanic he told me that it’s the faulty head gasket .
After the diagnostic done ,he said it could cost me couples thousands dollars to fix it; firstable I’m so pisse up!still having 2 years payment in that dawn car ,like it was my first car being to excited and didn’t take a time choose the one could sweeted my need.
I’m so sorry for the long comments I’m just so disappointed buying 10 thousand dollars car and after a year you’ve to spend another $2500 for fixed it.
I poured a blue devil ,and did a mistake to opened the radiator cap after 30min should I pour again also the leack has reduced considerably

            Charles-

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Avenger. The reason why you wouldn’t want to open the radiator cap during the 50 minute idle is the product is attracted to air flow. Opening the cap would potentially create another area where the product might think is a leak and react accordingly. If you noticed improvement after your first application, a second application may be worth while. My Reservoir cat keeps popping off during the idle part

        • BlueDevil Pro on July 8, 2015 at 9:44 am

          Will-

It is possible that you may be getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure which may be causing the reservoir to “pop off”. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with a low compression reading. If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will sometimes notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull. Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly.

          Thank You!

          -BDP

          • Sean Luke on November 1, 2016 at 7:37 pm

So if your are positive which cylinder has the leak you should remove that spark plug during the pouring and idle process? I have a 2004 Civic and I am 100% sure it is cylinder #2 after compression checks on all 4 cylinders I just want to be sure before I do it.

          • BlueDevil Pro on November 2, 2016 at 9:19 am

            Sean-

If you are getting combustion/exhaust gasses into the cooling system, we recommend removing the spark plug from the affected cylinder. You would remove the spark plug before starting the BlueDevil process, while the engine is cold. Based on your description, you would want to remove the spark plug from the #2 cylinder to relieve some of the pressure from building up, thus allowing the product to circulate and seal properly.

            Thank you!

What about the fuel pumping into that cylinder for 50 min. Is There a risk of fire?

          • BlueDevil Pro on September 25, 2017 at 9:55 am

            Brian-

Were you referring to the recommendation of removing the spark plug from the affected cylinder, in the situation of using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer when combustion/exhaust gases are present? If so, you may also disconnect the fuel injector from the affected cylinder. This would accomplish the same goal. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

thank you for the advice on umpluging the fuel injectors!

          • Bob Waters on January 9, 2023 at 12:52 pm

Doesn’t the sealant require combustion heat to solidify? If such is the case, wouldn’t removing the plug/spark/combustion from the leaking cylinder eliminate the necessary condition for BlueDevil to work as intended? Is the heat generated by combustion in the other cylinders sufficient to cause solidification?

I’m working on a 2002 Honda Civic with a head gasket leak that’s blowing coolant from the overflow, and the standard approach to using BlueDevil hasn’t worked, due, I assume, to exhaust gasses exiting through the breach. I’m about to try the method you’ve recommended, but I’m a wee bit skeptical.

          • BlueDevil Pro on January 9, 2023 at 2:48 pm

            Bob-

The product reacts at around 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Removing the spark plug from the affected cylinder would help reduce the amount of pressure building up, thusly allowing the product to seal better. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

          • BlueDevil Pro on May 2, 2016 at 9:48 am

            Noah-

The reason for putting your heat on with the blower to the max, during the BlueDevil Head Gasket Procedure, is to draw heat from the engine to help it from overheating during the 50 minute idle. As long as the vehicle isn’t going to overheat in that 50 minutes, the product would still be able to seal. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

I have a 2000 Nissan Xterra and I think the head gasket may be blown. If I add Blue Devil, all I do is just pour it in the radiator or top radiator hose then let it run for 50 min? Do i empty the radiator first?

        • BlueDevil Pro on August 18, 2015 at 2:23 pm

          Sky-

Yes, you will flush the cooling system first and refill it with water. Then, starting from a cold start you will slowly add the recommended amount of BlueDevil through the radiator cap.

          Thank you!

          • BlueDevil Pro on February 17, 2016 at 9:25 am

            Khoury-

Thank you for your question. After flushing the radiator, you should be filling the system back up to capacity, leaving just enough room for the recommended amount of the product. You can find your cooling system capacity in the vehicle’s owners manual.

        • BlueDevil Pro on August 21, 2015 at 9:38 am

          Keri-

As long as your vehicle will not overheat during the 50 minute idle then you do not have to worry about running the heater. This step is recommended simply to pull heat from the engine.

The bottle says nothing about removing the thermostat, nor flushing the system first. Pleas explain.

          • BlueDevil Pro on May 16, 2016 at 3:25 pm

            William-

There are two different Head Gasket Sealers that we manufacture.
You may use either Head Gasket Sealer. The one you have is the “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) which is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (32 oz./yellow label) requires both the removal of thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.

The product with the yellow label will give you best overall results as long as you can remove the thermostat and flush the system prior to use. However, if the thermostat is difficult to remove or you would rather not then you can always use the “Pour N Go”. With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use.

I am about to use your product, head gasket sealer. I read on the botel that i need to remove the thermostat before i start the process.
What i would like to know is, when do i fit the thermostat again, after i had the vehicle run for 50 min or may i fit it before i start the 50 min process?

          • BlueDevil Pro on September 1, 2016 at 9:28 am

            Christiaan-

Once you complete the 50 minute idle, allow the vehicle to cool off for a couple of hours (at least 2 hours). At that point, you would be able to put the thermostat back in. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

It is important that you have drained enough fluid from the cooling system prior to adding the proper amount of BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer so that enough BlueDevil can be added. Not using enough product may hinder the results of BlueDevil.

Hi, I have a 2000 Jag xkr with a blown head gasket. Car never overheated, white smoke disappeared on way to mechanic. Will not pay 5k for repair. Can I add 16 ounce seal and go to reservoir or do I need to disconnect top hose and do that way.? No radiator cap on car.fluid getting on spark plugs so idling rough. Do I change plugs before or after procedure?

        • BlueDevil Pro on September 22, 2016 at 10:25 am

          Steven-

If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

You do not need to change the spark plugs before the BlueDevil process; you may wait until the process is complete and the engine has cooled back down.

          Thank you!

          Jake-

Thank you for asking about your BMW 325ci. If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there; it may be added into the hose or into the opening where the hose is disconnected.  Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

          Thank you!

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 8, 2017 at 9:05 am

          Danielle-

You would want to shut the vehicle off if it’s going to overheat during the 50 minute idle. Unfortunately, if the vehicle is unable to idle for the full 50 minutes, the leak or symptoms your vehicle is having may be a little too extreme for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer to be effective. A hard part repair may be your best option.

          Thank you!

Once thermostat is replaced do I pour the blue devil/water mixture back in that ran out while changing the thermostat

        • BlueDevil Pro on April 24, 2017 at 9:35 am

          Denise-

The BlueDevil Head Gasekt Sealer only reacts to heat once. After the 50 minute idle and you shut the vehicle off, any extra BlueDevil in the system would be like extra water. It will not continue to react or continue to seal. It is not necessary to re-add the BlueDevil/water mixture back in to the system. You may refill it with your regular 50/50 mix.

What do i do if my headgasket is blowing from my exhaust pressurizing the engine coolant?

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 5, 2018 at 10:04 am

          Daniel-

We recommend applying the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully is to remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with a low compression reading. If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull. Leave the plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

        • BlueDevil Pro on October 30, 2018 at 10:42 am

          Karl-

With both the Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer and the “Mechanic Approved” Head Gasket Sealer(32 oz. yellow label), the product is sealing during the 50 minute idle. We recommend allowing the vehicle to cool off for a couple of hours after the 50 minutes is up, before topping it off with water/coolant or draining and refilling the system.

    • Mark on September 5, 2015 at 7:26 pm

I poured Blue Devil head gasket sealer pour-n-go in my radiator after I put water in it and in the overflow. The thing is, I was only able to put half of the bottle because the radiator is full of water already. However, I still had the engine run for 50 mins as directed. I checked underneath if there’s still leak and the gauge, if it’s overheating. Temp level is normal (short of middle) and no overheating for 50 mins and no sign of leakage after 20 mins of engine running.

My question is, do I still have to redo the procedure to Finnish off the bottle?

      • BlueDevil Pro on September 8, 2015 at 11:00 am

        Mark-

If you are no longer experiencing a leak, then you would not use the remainder of the bottle. It seems that the half of the bottle used was enough to seal the leak in your vehicle, even though the directed amount would have been the full 16 oz. You should be good to go at this point. • BlueDevil Pro on February 22, 2016 at 3:50 pm

            Steede-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer carries an overall success rate of over 90%. As long as the vehicle will idle for 50 minutes without stalling out or overheating and will not lose more than about 1 quart of water/antifreeze during that run then there is a very good chance BlueDevil will seal it. Once BlueDevil creates a seal it is a permanent fix.

Thank you for asking about your GMC Sonoma. Yes, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would treat a heat core leak. You will add the product directly into the radiator through the radiator cap. If the vehicle only has a reservoir or overflow tank, with the vehicle off and engine cold, you may disconnect the upper radiator hose, pour the product in through there, reconnect the hose, and then start the idle from that point. I have a 2002 Honda Accord. I recently used Blue Devil and brother I am so far really surprised and happy! This stuff actually works! Now let’s see if it passes the rest of time… I’ll let you all know. ‘

    • Paul on December 3, 2016 at 8:38 pm

I’m not sure about the final step 6 on bottle:

“Let engine cool before installing new thermostat. Drain enough fluid to refill with compatible anti-freeze”.

So the wafer+blue devil+antifreeze mixture is ok for below freezing temperatures?

Or is it better to drain out all of the water+blue devil and refill with 50/50?

      • BlueDevil Pro on December 6, 2016 at 9:24 am

        Paul-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer only reacts to heat once (one heat cycle). After the 50 minute idle and the vehicle cools, any extra BlueDevil in the system would be like extra water. You would be fine either way. You can drain enough fluid to add your compatible antifreeze or you can completely drain the system and start over with fresh water and antifreeze for your 50/50 mix.

        Thank you!

      • BlueDevil Pro on December 14, 2016 at 9:35 am

        Ashley-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy El Camino. The direction stating to “turn heater to Max” is to draw heat from the engine to keep it from overheating during the 50 minute idle. As long as the vehicle is not going to overheat, not running the heat wouldn’t be an issue.

        Dawn-

If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring it through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there (it may be added into the hose or through the opening).  Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point. The reason for the direction of putting the heater on, blower to the max, is to draw heat from the engine to help from overheating during the 50 minute idle. As long as the vehicle isn’t going to overheat, the product should be able to help seal the leak.

        Thank you!

Ok so I’m going to try and repair my blown head gasket myself and I would really like to know exactly what tools I need or should use for the job. I’m driving a 2008 Jeep liberty sport 3.7l v6 2wd …… Also I’m replacing the valve covers what tools do I need for that as well

      • BD Auto Pro on December 9, 2020 at 9:27 pm

        Robs,

For a job that big, we would really recommend getting a repair manual for your Jeep. There are a lot of torque specs and sequencing help that the repair manual will be able to provide. You can read through the procedure beforehand to learn what you might need. For starters you’ll need a full socket set, the largest socket you will probably need would be for the crank pulley bolt. You’ll also want an accurate torque wrenches both in inch-pounds and foot-pounds. We would also recommend a camera to grab pictures of the disassembly process to make sure everything goes back together correctly. Besides that, you’ll want basic hand tools, gasket scrapers, penetrating oil, etc. Lastly, we would recommend having your heads checked by an engine shop while you have them off for flatness and valve condition as well as checking the valve seats.

        Thanks again for your question!

A clean, free-flowing system is what gives the product the best chance of working properly. You wouldn’t really want to increase the RPM’s and put extra compression into the system. I see that the instructions indicate removal of the thermostat. I have seen horror stories about plugged heater cores. I have a van with a front/rear heater core. Would it be ok to bypass the heater cores while running the first 50 minutes? (I haven’t looked to see how difficult that would be yet). My thermostat, radiator and water pump have all been replaced in the last 1000 miles so I don’t think they have any buildup yet, but the heatercores have over 200,000 miles on them.

Yes, that is 100% correct. The BlueDeveil “Pour N Go” is an easy-to-use formula.

          • Greg Tripp on August 30, 2015 at 9:45 am

You seem to have conflicting answers from Pour and Go techs here.

In an earlier post you tell someone that the system has to be flushed and filled before the sealer and here you tell someone that it is fine to just pour it in….with antifreeze. Which way works best might be the question?

            BlueDevil Pro on August 18th, 2015 – 2:23pm
            Sky-

Yes, you will flush the cooling system first and refill it with water. Then, starting from a cold start you will slowly add the recommended amount of BlueDevil through the radiator cap.

            Thank you!

          • BlueDevil Pro on August 31, 2015 at 11:07 am

            Greg-

There are two different Head Gasket Sealers.

You may use either Head Gasket Sealer. The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use.

If the system appears to be dirty or the antifreeze has not been changed in a long time then it would be a good idea to flush the system with the sue of either of our BlueDevil products.

Will it work on 2004 oldsmobile alero 3.4l. It has water in oil and runs hot 30 minutes after driving.

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 19, 2014 at 5:33 pm

      Jacob,

Yes, it will potentially work in your Oldsmobile. Due to water being in the oil, you will want to change the oil before and after the BlueDevil process.

We would strongly recommend that the thermostat is removed and left out for the 50 minute idle; this will help keep the engine temperature down. As long as the vehicle is able to idle for the recommended 50 minutes, without stalling or overheating, you will have a great chance at sealing the leak.

        • BlueDevil Pro on April 20, 2015 at 11:17 am

          Melissa-

In order for the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer to work properly the vehicle should be able to idle for a full 50 minutes without overheating or stalling out. If it is overheating prior to that amount of time then the leak may be a little bit too large for what BlueDevil is intended to fix.

          Thank You!

I pumped coolant all through the crankcase of ford 4.2 v6. changed oil and oil filter. freed hydrolock through spark plug openings. During pretreatment coolant flush after removing thermostate. I obviously recontaminated oil. I want the engine to last the 50 min of the BD cycle so I am changing the oil again and will keep fingers crossed.
I am guessing, if sucessful, I will have to change the oil and filter after the BD cycle during which there must be some further contamination.
            Thanks

          • BlueDevil Pro on July 8, 2015 at 3:55 pm

            Joshua,

One further thing we would recommend doing before you start the engine again is removing the oil pan as well. Oil will always float on water so there may be some baffles in your oil pan where the water will remain and not be drained out through the drain plug of your oil pan. It may be a tedious job, but it could help save your engine’s main bearings and will help guarantee you don’t have standing water in your oil pan.

Great product !

I just changed my thermostat and hoses, two days ago and tonight i put in Blue Devil (followed instructions)…unfortunately when I i gave it a test ride after its 50 minutes after adding it in…the bottom radiator hose disconnected because i didn’t put the clamp on properly! There was coolant and blue devil spots everywhere! Should I retry with Blue Devil…or will it damage something.

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 3, 2014 at 3:01 pm

      Paul-

You may not need to add more BlueDevil at this point. Because the vehicle did make it through the full 50 minute idle it is possible that the seal was already created by BlueDevil. At this point, we recommend refilling the cooling system and clamping everything back up. Once you have done so you may go ahead and drive/run the vehicle to determine whether or not it has sealed.

      Phil-
If your vehicle has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring it through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold, you may add the product through the top radiator hose. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

    Hi,

I just used Blue Devil today on my Peugeot 206 1.4 1999. I didn’t remove the thermostat (it’s new as I replaced it a few weeks ago). Does it affect anything? How long should I let blue devil in the system? FYI, I drained the radiator (using radiator flush to clean it) before using blue devil. After using blue devil, I can see a little bit of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Is it normal? Thank you.

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 22, 2014 at 6:00 pm

      Rizal-

The direction that asks the thermostat to be removed has nothing to do on whether or not the thermostat is new or old. We require the thermostat to be removed to create a free flow for the full 50 minute idle while the product is active. However, it has still worked in the past when the thermostat was not removed but the overall success rate is somewhat lower.

BlueDevil may remain in the system indefinitely or you may drain it any time after the vehicle has cooled down. There is no benefit to leaving it in or taking it out.

Keep in mind the system may produce steam or smoke for a few days until the moisture left over in the system has completely cleared out.

Yes, you may use either product as long as the vehicle can idle for 50 minutes without overheating or stalling out. In addition to the directions, you will want to change the oil before and after the BlueDevil process to ensure proper results.

The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use.
With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use. Based on your capacity, you will be using 16 ounces either way.

If the car will overheat prior to the 50 minute idle being complete then that is usually an indication that the problem is too extreme for what BlueDevil is intended to fix and will require hard part repair.

2001 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl 3.4 engine. Daughter has experienced loss of coolant but no obvious leak. Temp gauge has gone to hot but she stopped & turned engine off. Pressure test okay. Today, while driving, sudden clanking/rapping type noise & lost power steering (fluid ok, belt new & ok). Stopped vehicle, upon trying to restart, louder clanking/rapping noise. Removed oil cap, oil appears “creamy yellowish/white” & sludge like. Vehicle has not fully overheated … yet. Suspect blown head gasket. Will Blue Devil help under the described circumstances?

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 2, 2014 at 5:28 pm

      Brenda-

You should first change your oil to see if that helps with the “clanking” noise you are experiencing. If it does, then you would be safe in using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. If the noise continues after changing the oil then you may want to take the car into a certified mechanic to have it further diagnosed.

If you decide to use the BlueDevil then make sure that the oil is changed before and after the process.

Yes, the heater should be left on max for the full 50 minute idle, when applying the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. If the car starts overheating prior to the end of the 50 minutes you should shut the engine down and allow it to cool down.

        Thank You!

Recently i have been having overheating problems and it blow out a hose to my heater on my 2002 Dodge Durango. Living in Hawaii i had the mechanic seal off the heater since we have no need for heaters here. It now appears i have a small leak in my head gasket and i am looking to use your product Pour and Go. However it says to run the heater first. I am guessing this is so it doesnt clog up the heater core. Hopefully since i dont have a heater i can just use Blue Devil from after that part of the instructions. Can you please let me know if my line of thinking is right here or how i should proceed.
    Thanks, Gary

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 27, 2014 at 3:03 pm

      Gary-

The reason we recommend running the heater on max during the idle is to help pull heat off the engine. As long as your vehicle can idle for 50 minute period without stalling out or overheating then you will have no issues in getting proper results from the BlueDevil whether or not the heater is connected. You will simply ignore the step that mentions running the heater on max.

Hi, I’ve used blue devil with success in the past. Great product! I have a 1995 Tbird with blown head gasket and would like to use blue devil to save it. The heater does not work. I haven’t a clue as to why the is not working, only that the fan is not blowing and no heat or ac. This is a car my son got and history is unknown. Wondering how to use blue devil or if it can be used in this situation. Any help appreciated. Again great product, saved my daughters’ 2002 PT cruiser, runs great 16 months after treatment.

  20. michele on October 25, 2014 at 6:09 pm

Hi. Is it ok to add blue devil through the reservoir if I do not have access to the radiator? I know I can remove the top radiator hose but that is difficult on my e46 BMW engine.

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 27, 2014 at 4:57 pm

      Michele-

If your vehicle has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap instead of pouring it through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold, you may add the product through the top radiator hose. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

You mentioned that the top hose may be difficult to access but we strongly recommend that it is added through that hose rather than the reservoir.

i have a 85′ vw vanagon. it has 50 percent loss of compression in one cylinder and after running for a hour i see bubbles in the overflow tank, however it is not leaking anti freeze or blowing smoke. i feel this is a head gasket issue and i need blue devil, what do you think? and can i use it on a vanagon?

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 31, 2014 at 11:10 am

      Kelly-

As you mentioned, it sounds like the vehicle is getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. We would recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. It is 100% safe to use on your Vanagon

To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak. If you are not sure which one that is, you may pull all of the spark plugs and will notice one will have a white-crystal-like substance on it and/or may look dirty; this is the plug you should pull. Leave that plug out for the 50 minute idle in order to relieve the pressure from building up and thus allowing the product to seal properly.

I took thermostat out and reconnect hose before using Blue Devils today I did notice there was slight dripping from housing. Will that affect the effects of Blue Devil.

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 3, 2014 at 3:41 pm

      Stacey-

The way you can get around the leaky housing is by taking the thermostat with housing and modifying it so that the middle piece does not close; you may remove this piece or gut the middle of the thermostat. By doing so you will create a free flow and still be able to have the full housing installed.

Once the BlueDevil process is complete you will need to replace the thermostat.

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 10, 2014 at 1:17 pm

      Robert-

First of all, we are sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Mustang.

You may use either Head Gasket Sealer. The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use.

With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use. Based on your capacity, you will be using 16 ounces either way.

It sounds like you do have a leaking head gasket based on the fact that you are losing antifreeze. We recommend using the 32 ounce bottle of BlueDevil on your Cadillac as the “Pour N Go” is formulated for 4 or 6 cylinder vehicles and you are working with a V8.

How can I tell if I have water in my oil? I am planning to use Blue Devil Pour and Go on my 2003 6 cylinder BMW325i. I am losing coolant and the dealer has diagnosed it as a blown head gasket (or cracked head or cracked block). I just changed the oil 2 days ago and drove the car 180 miles and I now need to add coolant to the system. The oil is the same color and viscosity as when it went in 2 days ago. Is there a way I can be sure no water is mixed in with the oil? Thanks,

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 29, 2014 at 1:31 pm

      Lee-

The oil will usually look “milky” or have a white substance show up when the dipstick is pulled. You will not always have water in the oil when you have a blown head gasket.

If it has been diagnosed with a blown head gasket or cracked head then we definitely recommend using the BlueDevil “Pour N Go” to seal the leak.

One more question re: diagnosing water in oil… The reason I am asking is that you all suggest that the oil is changed prior to using blue devil pour and go if the oil has water in it. This vehicle ( 2003 BMW 325i 6 cylinder) has the thermostat attached to the housing and it is a $50 part. I can easily flush out the cooling system though. To achieve best results would you recommend to use the Blue Devil mechanic approved yellow label with the flushed radiator but with the thermostat in place or use the pour-n-go.

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 30, 2014 at 10:57 am

      Lee-

You may use either Head Gasket Sealer. The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (32 oz./yellow label) requires both the removal of thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.

With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use. Based on your capacity, you will be using 16 ounces either way. If the vehicle starts to run hot then you will want to shut it down to prevent any damage to the engine. If it is unable to do so then it may be too far gone for the product to work as it is designed.

I used the mechanic approved Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealer on my 2001 5.3L V8 Silverado and followed the directions on the bottle, but when I did it, I poured it in through the reservoir/overflow instead of through the top radiator hose. Will it still fix my head gasket?

    Thank you

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 19, 2015 at 9:54 am

      Terry-

If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, the best way to add BlueDevil is, with the car off and engine cold, disconnecting the top radiator hose and adding the product there. Once it has been added you would reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

However, it has still worked when others have added it through the reservoir.

Hi I have an 97 cadillac deville that run hot after a few miles but I have no water mixing in oil or anything and I changed my thermostat so will blue devil fix my over problem I’m thinking exhaust steam getting in cooling system

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 20, 2015 at 9:26 am

      Randall-

You stated that the vehicle is getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. We would recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer.

To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading.

      All the Best,

I used your other repair sealer (not the pour and go) on my 6.5L diesel suburban roughly 3,000 miles ago. It worked great until last night when the head gasket very obviously went out again. I’m ASE certified, so would have no problem replacing the gasket, but don’t have the time. Can I use the pour and go sealer even though I’ve already used your full repair sealer and that failed after a few thousand miles? I want to sell this truck as soon as possible, so am really just looking for a quick fix. Thanks!

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 20, 2015 at 9:29 am

      Mike-

You could potentially use the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go on your Suburban but you would need to add 2 full bottles due to the larger cooling capacity. However, the Pour-N-Go is a less concentrated formula. We recommend using the “mechanic approved” 32 ounce BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer again. This would ensure that you get the best results possible.

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 21, 2015 at 12:28 pm

White smoke would be an indication that you might have a blown head gasket. If you are actually losing gasoline through the tailpipe then I would have your fuel injectors checked.

I have a 05 dodge van and there is oil in the radiator but no coolant in the oil. Someone told me it was a head gasket issue that heads are blown or cracked that blue devil could fix it but a post here that you replied to says blue devil cant fix oil in coolant. My question is if blue devil is suppose to seal the crack where the oil is coming from why wouldnt it stop oil from seaping into the radiator?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 23, 2015 at 9:34 am

      Mandy-

Unfortunately, BlueDevil is not intended to stop oil from leaking into the cooling system. It will work if coolant/water is leaking into the oil but not the other way around.

      -BDP

      • mandy on January 23, 2015 at 1:22 pm

Do you know of anything to stop oil from going into the coolant? Should i still use blue devil for the gasket or should i make sure first that there is a crack. I know your not a mechanic but does my symptoms sound like a gasket problem?

        • BlueDevil Pro on January 23, 2015 at 1:59 pm

          Mandy-

We do not currently manufacture any products that are intended to help remedy the problem you are dealing with.

We recommend that you have your mechanic examine the head for cracks. If your head is OK, then you have to assume you have a cracked block, and you’re best bet at that point would be to find a used motor.

Yes, it is a required step for you to remove the thermostat, while using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (32oz yellow label). The product has a slightly higher concentrated formula than the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer, and thus, requires a cooling system flush and removal of the thermostat prior to use. The only solution for the situation you have described would be to tear the engine down and replace the parts.

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 23, 2015 at 9:32 am

      Arletha-

Our guess is that you are getting water/coolant leaking into your engine oil. If enough water gets into the fluid oil system it can eventually cause the vehicle to stall out.

You could potentially retreat the vehicle but we recommend changing the oil before and after the process to ensure best results. Feel free to contact us at 888-863-0426 with any questions.

If the coolant level is not dropping at all then it is more likely an air bubble in the system. You could always have it looked by a certified mechanic to help diagnose whether or not there is an issue going on.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 1, 2015 at 10:01 am

You may use either Head Gasket Sealer. The “Pour N Go” (16 oz./white label) is a less concentrated formula that does not require the removal of the thermostat or a flush of the cooling system prior to use. Whereas the “Mechanic Approved” (32 oz./yellow label) requires both the removal of thermostat and a flush before applying the product; the 32 ounce is the more concentrated formula.

The product with the yellow label will give you best overall results as long as you can remove the thermostat and flush the system prior to use. With the use of either product, be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use. Based on your capacity, you will be using 16 ounces either way.

hi, i got a 2000 honda civic coupe with a blown head gasket. i noticed it first because it was overheating and all the coolant i had poured in the radiator was gone. Right away i put some water in to make the heat decrease. next day i noticed also that it struggled to start. i didnt start as quick as it used to, but i didnt pay much attention to it. while i was drive on streets it fully overheated every time i stopped at a red light, and i came back down when i started running. i took it home and my dad poured a bottle of k&w permanent sealer. but i guess we didnt follow the correct steps. before having to pay 1500 for the head gasket repair, i would like to try blue devil on my car to see how it goes. my question is. Can i put blue devil in when i already put the k&w sealer? thanks in advance

Your product looks like a great “plan A”, and and it seems my car looks like a good candidate, evidently slow coolant leak into the combustion chamber–missing coolant–no drips and no evidence of coolant in the oil, right?
, My question is if it fails to seal or I have an problem in the future, are there any downsides? Does BlueDevil leave any residue that would make the process of replacing the head gasket any more difficult? Does it permanently and measurably reduce heat transfer in the cooling system?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 1, 2015 at 1:42 pm

You’re right, your vehicle does sound like a great candidate for using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. The product carries a success rate around 90%.

If for whatever reason the product is unable to work properly it would not make future repairs any more difficult. The product will not cause any harm or reduce heat transfer within the cooling system.

I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX with over 241,000 miles on it. I started having some cooling problems last year and had my radiator and thermostat replaced. However, my car kept on overheating from time to time – usually if I was idling in heavy traffic on a hot day. It hadn’t happened again last month while driving on the interstate for about 2 hours. My last episode happened three days ago. I was driving and my car just started to slow down and cut off on me. I was able to coast to a safe spot and let it cool down. In about 30 minutes, I was able to start it again and drive home. Once I got home, I let it cool off for a few hours and then checked the coolant fluid and oil levels. The radiator was full and there was coolant in the reservoir and the oil level was fine. Just yesterday, during my regular oil change appointment, I had my coolant system flushed and had them do a compression test on the coolant system to see if there were any leaks. Thank goodness, none were found. The mechanic wanted to check to see if a head gasket was blown but I just didn’t have the money to have to test done yesterday. After reading some of the other comments, I’m thinking that this might be my problem but I haven’t seen any white smoke coming from my car or anything mixed with my oil. If I can find someone to check the head gasket at a minimal fee, do you think it would be worth it using your product or just paying the money to get it fixed by a mechanic? I’m willing to pay up to $1000 to get it fixed since I never had any other major problems with my car in the 13 years that I have had it. I just can’t afford to make car payments at this time. Any recommendations?

      Lisa,

As you were describing the problem with your Civic it is a good possibility that you have a blown head gasket. Even a small leak can cause the problems you’re having without the other symptoms of white smoke or bubbles in the radiator. Some auto parts stores sell a kit to chemically test for a head gasket leak that is inexpensive so it might be worth calling a few in your area and asking.

BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is a great alternative to having a costly head gasket replacement. Since your car has such a small engine and at this point a small leak, you could use BlueDevil Pour-N-Go (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/pour-n-go-head-gasket-sealer-00209/). BlueDevil Pour-N-Go is something you can install yourself in just a few minutes using the directions in the link above. It is guaranteed to seal your head gasket leak!

If you have any other questions please let us know!

So if I use this product and I don’t have a leak, it won’t hurt anything else?

        • BlueDevil Pro on June 11, 2015 at 10:24 am

          Lisa-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer should not be used as a preventative maintenance.

Have 1997 toyota tacoma 4 cyl engine. After it runs about 20/30 minutes starts pumping water outof overflow I have traced it to a leaking head gasket. Is blue devl a fix for this

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 20, 2015 at 10:26 am

      Kenneth-

Based on your symptoms we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer.

It sounds like your Toyota may be getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading.

Feel free to contact us at 888-863-0426 with any further questions.

      Thank You!

Yes, you should flush the cooling system and refill it with water prior to applying the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer.

Unfortunately, we do not manufacture any products that are intended to stop oil from going into the coolant. Our BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will work when water/coolant is entering the oil but not the other way around.

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 11, 2015 at 1:19 am

      Peter,

Thanks for your question about your Camaro. The symptoms you are describing do all sound like a blown head gasket. With your car having a larger cooling system and a leak of this size we could recommend using BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (available here: http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/?page_context=search&faceted_search=0). All of our products carry a money back guarantee if you purchase them online or from one of our partnering auto parts stores.

So I have been doing my research all day while I was at work today, and decided that once I got off, I would try a bottle of the “Pour and Go”. My 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7L was smoking like a chimney and the oil looked like chocolate milk, I knew I was screwed! Well I picked it up at AutoZone, flushed my coolant and changed my oil first, then followed the steps on the bottle. So far, the smoke is gone! No rough idle anymore, no check engine light, and I took it on the highway runs like a champ at 70-80 MPH. I’ll update if I have any changes.

  84. Jeff on June 18, 2015 at 9:38 pm

I have a 1986 s10. I used the BlueDevil product. After pouring it in and completing the idling process, I let the engine cool off for a bout an hour or so. When I went to top off the radiator with antifreeze as recommended, some anti freeze and possibly some of the BlueDevil product shot out of the radiator. Should I used another bottle of BlueDevil or should I wait a while more and just add the antifreeze?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 19, 2015 at 1:35 pm

      Jeff-

You do not need to add more BlueDevil at this point. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer creates a permanent seal during the 50 minute idle. Once the idle is complete and the vehicle has cooled down it will not make any difference whether BlueDevil is left in or not.

      Thank You!

    I am just wow’d! Here’s why…

I only put in 1/3 of the can (I thought there’d be enough room for all of it because prior to I was having to add 1 quart of coolant every 3-4 days), but I guess I didn’t plan it out right (or maybe the engine was still a bit too warm), anyway, after adding 1/3 of the can I popped the cap on, let the engine run about 50 minutes, and I HAVEN’T HAD ANY OVERHEATING ISSUES SINCE! (Also, it’s nice to have the A/C working again.)

Thank you Blue Devil, you saved me $1900.00!!!!

16 oz. blue devil head gasket sealer. On the bottle under instructions it says turn the temp max. and then it says let it idle 50 mins on the normal operating temp. what it means when it says normal operating temp? do we need to put temp from max to cold? normal? or what? or it means let the temp stay on max and idle 50 mins? Thanks.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 20, 2015 at 10:19 am

      John-

By “normal operating temp” we are meaning that it does not overheat. You are right that the engine temperature should be a little lower with the heater on high. However, we still recommend running the heater on high. The product only requires the engine to reach about 150 degrees Fahrenheit in order to gain the benefit.

I am about to replace my thermostat for the 4th time. It currently has a failsafe thermostat and after about 4 days from replacement it begins to overheat only during slow down or idle position. No moisture from tail pipe or smoke of any kind. No leaks of any kind. Could it be a blown head gasket and if it isn’t would it hurt if I used it any way just in case?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 27, 2015 at 2:53 pm

      Donna-

It does not sound like a blown head gasket based on your description. You may want to have the system bled down in case of any air bubbles stuck within the cooling system.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a certified mechanic take a look at the vehicle and come up with a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made you will be able to tackle the problem.

Hi Blu Devil guys, I have a question for you.

I have Toyota Avensis 2.0 diesel engine, and it’s diagnosed with exhaust/combustion gases in cooler with chemical tester that changed color from blue to green, since the bubbles are really small and barely visible. I don’t lose a lot of water while driving in town, only when i step on a gas and increase engine workload I start loosing water from reservoir/overflow. When in standby I don’t loose water, and the engine doesn’t overheat, also coolant and oil doesn’t mix since I changed oil and coolant and found no traces of mixing so I can conclude that it’s not big opening in the gasket. I don’t know if it’s the gasket or the head or engine block since opening the engine is also expensive.

With all this symptoms could I use blue devil, and if yes, how should I apply it since I don’t know on which cylinder is the problem (haven’t tested the compression on cylinders), or I shouldn’t worry since I’m not loosing water when car is working idle and go with the manual?

    Thank you

I can’t say it enough, I just got back from a test drive after the repair procedure.

I noticed about 5-10 minute into the idle process, that the rough idle went away, and although I was hopeful when I started, the smooth idle got me really excited.

After the 50 min idle I decided to order pizza with the money I saved on a full head gasket rebuild, and drove the car down to the pizza place to get it, and the entire time the temp guage didn’t budge, even with me intentionally keeping the revs higher than normal!

I don’t pretend to know how you guys came up with a chemical alternative to a mechanical rebuild, but I am eternally grateful that you did!

      Jimmy,

Thanks for your question about your Malibu. Your car may have overheated simply because it had been idling for so long so you may try parking your car, letting it cool completely, then driving again to see if you overheat. This also could be an indication that your thermostat is bad, as they can often be damaged when your car overheats so it may be worth putting a new thermostat in as well.

I got me some Blue Devil and poored it into my coolent resivore 4 days ago. I cleaned out the devil, but now I dont know what to do.

      Elise-

If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.
Based on what you have done thus far, it would be a good idea to flush the cooling system out first, so that there is nothing in the system that would be potentially clogging or restricting of flow.

I’ve seen videos online where there is a buildup of BD around cooling channels of the cylinder walls. Would a chemical flush/backflush after the treatment be a good idea or would that potentially diminish the effects of the treatment?

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 31, 2015 at 11:40 am

      Scott,

Thanks for your question about BlueDevil products. BlueDevil sealers are safe to stay in the cooling system of your vehicle after the leak is sealed and will not diminish the cooling capacity of your system so a flush is not necessary. BlueDevil forms a chemical weld at the leak point, so once the leak is sealed you could flush your cooling system without affecting the integrity of the seal, but again, is not necessary.

What can I try to do to get the vehicle to crank so I can use Blue Devil?

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 31, 2015 at 12:07 pm

      Alan,

Thanks for your question about your Nissan Altima. The last thing you can try is removing the spark plug in the blown cylinder and seeing if that will relieve the pressure in that cylinder and the cooling system enough to allow it to run. If that doesn’t work, then unfortunately your leak is too big for BlueDevil to fix and you will need to replace the head gaskets.

      Mr. Moore-

Thank you for asking about your Grand Prix. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing a blown head gasket. We recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer, found here http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/ . As long as you are not losing water/coolant too quickly and the vehicle will idle for a full 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out, you would be a good candidate for the product. You will want to change your oil before and after the BlueDevil process. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

Thank you for asking about your Cadillac cts. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is intended for water/coolant leaks only. Unfortunately, we do no manufacture a product intended to stop oil getting into the radiator. A hard part repair may be your best option.

2011 Subaru outback. What product for bubbling out reservoir. Car keeps burping. Wont overheat ideling only while driving

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 28, 2016 at 8:45 am

      Roger-

We recommend using BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer for your Subaru. It sounds like the vehicle may be getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading. Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system; you will only need 8 – 10 ounces in your Subaru.

      Thank you!

Used the Pour and Go on our 2003 PT cruiser. 1st problem, blown electric fan, 2nd, stuck thermostat, after all that over heating apparently the head gasket went. Liquid coming out of the tail pipe. Loss of coolant. Car sounded like a coffee pot. Ongoing overheating problem for months.
Found Pour and go on a web search. Used as directed, everything is running cool and fine. No loss of fluid, no coffee pot.
I’ve been in the automotive industry since the early 70’s, and have never found an additive that actually worked for a head gasket problem. This does, don’t let the price put you off, it is definitely well worth it! Average cost of a head gasket replace, 2,000 US! Average cost of a bottle of pour and go, 34.99. You do the math.

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 31, 2016 at 2:26 pm

      Rick-

Typically if the engine has to be shut off prior to the complete 50 minute idle it is an indication that the blown head gasket is too extreme for what BlueDevil is intended to fix. This usually means the vehicle will require a hard part repair.

I have a very slow leak somewhere from the cooling system, not any of the hoses or radiator (I pressure tested it), but I am unsure if it is the head gasket (no oil in the coolant and no milkiness in the oil) or if it might actually be leaking somewhere else in the engine. Will this product still work if the leak is elsewhere in the cooling system?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 27, 2016 at 12:02 pm

Thank you for your question. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer would treat leaks for blown head gaskets, warped/cracked heads, leaking heater cores, leaking freeze plugs, leaking radiators and blocks. If you are unsure where the leak is coming from, you may want to have the vehicle properly diagnosed by a certified ASE mechanic to give yourself a better idea of how to treat it. I am thinking of using yellow blue devil head gasket sealer. Will it work in Cadillac Deville 8 cylinder engine? How do I add it to engine? Please explain whole procedure?

Yes, the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is compatible with your Cadillac Deville. If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring it through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there. Once it has been added reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point. The directions are listed in the following link, http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-directions/ . I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent with a 1.5L and for a few months coming, I noticed that the overflow reservoir was always overfilled and had to put more water in the radiator. I noticed one day that with the radiator cap off I let the engine reach operating temperature and noticed that the water inside the radiator was bubbling. It got worst when I accelerated the engine the air bubbles got worst. Just this past weekend I after I have just about replaced everything inside the engine compartment for the exception of the entire engine, I removed the valve cover and found the oil to be milky in texture. I will assume that, that is water mixed with the oil.
My question if I used Blue Devil in my 2002 Accent should I remove the milky oil with filter and replace with new oil and filter? I what to get rid of the car it has 106,000 miles on it and I need something newer and better.
I just want this car to last a few months until I get a new one. I already had to replace the head gasket before the timing belt broke and it bent an exhaust valve on the #4 cylinder. I really do not want to go through a full teardown again if I can avoid it. You folk think your product will work, I will take the chance and buy it.

You may still flush the system prior to adding BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer. If you use just plain water then after the 50 minute idle you should shut the engine off and allow it to cool for at least 2 hours; once the engine has cooled you may drain the system to add your factory recommended antifreeze.

Just saved $4,800 thanks to Blue Devil. Blew a head gasket on my 2000 Jag XKR, used the Blue Devil 32 ounce sealant, followed instructions to the letter, after idling for 50 min I let engine cool down then took out for a spin. There was little smoke coming out of pipes and after about 25 miles of driving none at all. More importantly car did not heat up. I’ve since put on 100 miles of freeway/city driving with no heat ups and no lost fluid. Product is amazing!!! 128. Jeff on November 21, 2016 at 4:24 am

I have here a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country with a 6 cylinder engine. I’ve replaced the radiator (crack at top hose output), water pump (leaking out weep hole) about 1 month ago. I thought my problems was solved, but I am still loosing coolant (about half a gallon per 6 miles). I’ve also replaced the thermostat, thermostat housing, top radiator hose, radiator cap,
I’ve done a block test for combustion and came back clean. Did an oil change last week and looked fine. No water coming from the tailpipe. I’ve done a compression test on the radiator at 15 psi for an hour at 2000 rpm’s and it held steady the hole time.
Nevertheless I must be losing it while driving because I have been putting 4×4 sheets of cardboard under the van every time I park it and have never seen it leak. My last hunch is the heater core. Although I never smell any clakeoolant and it does not appear to be leaking inside or out. Perhaps it’s steaming out somewhere and not actually leaking.

At this point, I have ordered the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer #38386 32oz (yellow label) and the BlueDevil Flush.
I have read just about every comment on the thread so I already know when using this one I have to pull the thermostat and flush the system fist. Since I have a normal radiator, I will be pouring it down there.

My question is, how much of the 32 ounce containing will I need to use for my vehicle. My vehicle has a coolant capacity of 13.36 qt. (12.64L).

    Best Regards,
    Jeff

I used blue devil head gasket sealer last month (the one with engine flush/remove thermostat/drain everything procedure) It seemed to work, but maybe not completely. The truck has a misfire again, and I’m suspecting head gasket leak still.

can I put the “pour and go” formula inside radiator even though I still have residual original blue devil inside the cooling system?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 4, 2017 at 8:49 am

      Andrew-

The product only reacts to heat once (one heat cycle). Any extra BlueDevil in the system would be like extra water at this point. It will not continue to react or continue to seal, so you would be fine in adding the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer. I bought a 95′ Chevy S10 about 2 weeks ago with 65k miles on it. Ran great for the first few days before it started to occasionally & then more occasionally idle rough & have a rough go thru 1st gear. It was quickly diagnosed by a mechanic as a blown head gasket due to rough idling & also an external leak which I can see is coming from where the headers meet the block. What I initially thought was a very dirty radiator when I bought the truck turned out to be radiator stop leak brown powder, I purchased your Blue Devil pour and go but wanted to do a radiator flush first and was concerned that the chemical flush could possibly remove stop leak from any leaks it’s currently preventing in the radiator, does your product seal back up any leaks a flush might do in the radiator?… Is this a valid concern?… Thanks

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 12, 2017 at 11:52 am

      Gustavo-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy S10. Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal. Flushing the cooling system would not deteriorate the seal the product already created.

It is possible that you are getting combustion/exhaust gases pumping back into the cooling system.  You can use a “Block Dye Tester” to confirm whether or not that is the case. BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer will still work if your vehicle is getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure.  To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading. Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system.

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 1, 2017 at 9:17 am

      TJ-

You are correct, the BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer is intended for use in 4 or 6 cylinder engines. Do you happen to know the cooling system capacity of your Chevy? You would need the proper amount of product at one time to properly treat your vehicle. Unfortunately, the 16 oz. you added to the system would not have had much of an effect, being that the system is larger than that of a 4 or 6 cylinder engine cooling system. Please contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 so that we can get a better understanding of the vehicle’s condition and cooling system capacity and be able to make any appropriate recommendations.

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 2, 2017 at 4:04 pm

      Tom-

It is best if the thermostat is removed when you run BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer through the cooling system. This will help create a free-flowing system.

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Equinox. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (https://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). Yes, you would be removing the thermostat and flushing the cooling system prior to use. Also, if you are getting water/coolant into the oil, we recommend changing the oil before and after the BlueDevil procedure. Hello Blue Devil Team,
My Nissan Xterra 2006 is overheating. We have removed thermostat, water pump is ok, engine direct attach fan is ok, coolant quality and level is ok, engine oil is not looking milky. The only thing I haven’t done is to confirm if head gasket is still ok; unfortunately I don’t have the tools to do engine compression test. My guess is that the overheating has affected my head gasket. Can I go ahead and apply Blue Devil under this condition; please advise?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 15, 2017 at 9:50 am

      Remi-

Thank you for asking about your Nissan Xterra.
Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system.

      Thank you!

So I have a 2001 Cherokee Sport with a 4.0. I was having overheating problems I replaced the thermostat and water pump, when looking at the old water pump I was sure this was the problem. But I am still having over heating issues and water loss. I can see water coming from the tail pipe, it is also running rough…and my check engine light is blinking occasionally indicating misfires. Do you think Blue Devil will work for me and which do recommend for my problem? also I currently have a clogged heater core :/

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 22, 2017 at 10:30 am

      Mike-

Thank you for asking about your Jeep Cherokee Sport. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/). It is possible that you are getting combustion/exhaust gases pumping back into the cooling system. You can use a “Block Dye Tester” to confirm whether or not that is the case. This would explain the misfires and the poor circulation of coolant, causing poor heating.
Be sure to follow the guidelines for the proper amount to use based on the size of your cooling system.

I have an ’02 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7L engine and it was missing when first started and blowing white smoke that I could smell was clearly antifreeze. I recently used the Blue Devil concentrated formula, but added it to the reservoir instead of the top radiator hose. The white smoke and smell have stopped but it still misses and stumbles when first started. Can I try to treat it again, or is this a one-try process only? Also, if I drive around with it still in the system for awhile before I drain it and refill with antifreeze, will I do damage, or do I need to do that right away?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 10, 2017 at 10:21 am

      Stephen-

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Ram 1500. Based on your description, we would recommend a second application of the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer (http://store.gobdp.com/head-gasket-sealer-38386/), adding the product through the radiator hose this time. The product only reacts to heat once. After the 50 minute idle and you shut the vehicle off, the product would not continue to react or continue to seal, so it is safe to leave it in the system.

Thank you for asking about your Toyota 4Runner. It sounds like the vehicle is getting combustion/exhaust gases blowing into the cooling system and creating pressure. To give yourself the best overall chance of BlueDevil working successfully, in addition to the directions, you should remove the spark plug from the cylinder with the leak; this will be the spark plug from the cylinder with the low compression reading. What does it mean if I have white smoke when revving at an idle along with a sputtering sound as it winds down? no milky oil, and no loss of coolant. Smoke smelled of something burning.it was white. no smoke when driving and no over heating even at high speeds. will your product help or could this be something else?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 19, 2017 at 10:08 am

      Josh-

If you are seeing white smoke, it sounds like you have water/coolant burning off somewhere and creating that smoke. Is the smoke coming from under the hood or from the exhaust pipe? Based on your description, if you are not noticing a loss of water/coolant, it would not be appropriate to use the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. We recommend taking the vehicle to a certified ASE mechanic for a proper diagnosis. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 28, 2017 at 10:04 am

      Penda-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota 4Runner. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer only reacts to heat once (one heat cycle), so you would not be getting any additional benefit or doing any harm by leaving the product in the system. You would be fine to leave the thermostat out for a few weeks.

Will the percentage of effectiveness lower if there is “milky oil” or possibly water in the oil. I have read that I must replace the oil before and after the head gasket sealer procedure. Will the product still be covered by the warranty?
    Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 29, 2017 at 9:01 am

      Jasmine-

Water getting into the engine oil is exactly what the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is intended for. As long as you are not losing water too quickly, you would be a great candidate for the product. You are correct, we recommend changing the oil before and after the BlueDevil process. The warranty on the product would still be covered as long as you are using it appropriately and as directed.

In the event of combustion gases entering cooling system, is it safe to “depressurize” that cylinder by removing spark plug? Is it safe to idle for 50 mins with a spark plug missing?

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 5, 2017 at 9:58 am

      Lanier-

Yes, it is safe to idle the vehicle for 50 minutes with the spark plug removed from the affected cylinder, to reduce the amount of pressure that is building up, and allowing for better overall circulation. It will be kind of loud and idle a little roughly but, it would not cause any harm to the engine.

      Christopher-

In terms of using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer, the vehicle would need to be able to idle for a full 50 minutes. Unfortunately, if the vehicle is unable to start, a hard part repair may be your best option. You can try checking your spark plugs and replacing any that have become deteriorated or fouled out. That may allow the vehicle to turn over, but if a great amount of water/coolant is getting into the cylinders, replacing the spark plugs would probably only be a very temporary solution.

I just put the BlueDevil head gasket sealer through the radiator upper hose and let the car run on idle for the 50mts as per instructions. My car wasn’t really overheating, I just was tired of hearing the bubbles noise in the cooling system as well as the reservoir tank. I took the car out [ 2008 suszuki forenza] for a test and after only 2 miles of driving the car engine overheated to a point of seeing the vapor coming out through the hood. The temperature went up to the maximum heating point and I went back home before it could be any worst. I let it cool down and put distilled water on the reservoir tank instead of coolant and took it to another test but still overheating. What would you recomend.

I have an old Toyota Cressida with 7MGTE engine. The thing is, earlier this month my cooling system is making this bubble noises and spewing out coolant out of the reservoir tank after a very spirited driving and is very noticeable when idling waiting for my turbo timer to cut off (after cut off, at this point lots of coolant is spewing out from the reservoir tank and i have to top up the coolant everytime im using the car). During that spirited driving the temperature did raise higher than usual but never reach the overheating point. (Double checked the oil, non of that milky stuff present)
I suspect a hairline crack headgasket and planning to use your yellow label 36oz head gasket sealer.

My question is, do I pour the whole bottle? My coolant capacity is around 8litre.
After removing thermostat and thorough flushing, Should I:
-Add water+ BlueDevil+water(completely fill and bleed the coolant) or
-Add water+BlueDevil(slightly fill with possible air pocket)?

And after the 50min process, should I just leave the mixed fluid, or drain the whole thing and fill up with a proper coolant?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 19, 2018 at 2:04 pm

      Alexx-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Cressida. For an 8 liter system, you would want to use about 10-12 ounces of the product. Based on your description, you would want to bleed the system first, prior to adding the product.
When finished, drain the system completely and refill with your regular 50/50 mix to get rid of any excess air.

      Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 31, 2018 at 8:58 am

      Ben-

Thank you for asking about your Oldsmobile 88. Unfortunately, neither of the head gasket sealers we manufacture would stop oil from getting into the coolant. Both head gasket sealers and our Radiator & Block Sealer are only intended for water/coolant leaks. A hard part repair may be your best option.

After the 50 minute idle, we recommend letting the vehicle cool off before topping the system off or draining and refilling with your compatible antifreeze. After the vehicle cools back down and the system is at the proper level, you would be fine to take it for a test drive.

Would it be okay to do a double treatment on a car? Would doing a double treatment cause any damage to the engine? Did the first treatment with BD Gasket Sealer and even though it did help a bit it didn’t completely get rid of the issue. So would the engine benefit from a 2nd treatment with Gasket Sealer Pour And Go instead of BD Gasket Sealer and be effective and a good option?

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 6, 2018 at 8:49 am

Yes, it is possible to do a second treatment of the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. Typically, you should only need to use the product once. Stuart-

If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there; do not pour it into the reservoir. It may be added into the hose or the opening on the radiator. Once BlueDevil has been added, reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

I have a Nissan pathfinder 2006. The thermostat is 1 piece assembly. If i remove it i will not be able to seal the engine housing or reconnect the pipes. What should i do? Keep it when idling and then replacing it? It will be affected by the blue liquid?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 19, 2019 at 9:00 am

      Rickyraf-

Thank you for asking about your Nissan Pathfinder. The best way to get around the thermostat housing is by taking the thermostat and modifying it so that the middle piece does not close; you may remove this piece or gut the middle of the thermostat. By doing so you will create a free flow and still be able to have the full housing installed. The thermostat should remain “open” while BlueDevil circulates through the system. Once the BlueDevil procedure is complete you will need to replace the thermostat. The other option would be to use BlueDevil Pour N Go Head Gasket Sealer which is an easy-to-use formula that does not require thermostat removal.

Thanks for the reply. What if i turn on the heater during the 50 minutes. This will keep the thermostat open? For nissan pathfinder 2006 how much quatity i should use? Complete bottle or half or 3/4 ?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 22, 2019 at 11:01 am

      Rickyraf-

Putting the heater on, blower to the max, will help draw heat from the engine to help it from overheating during the 50 minute run. You would use about 16 oz. of the product for your Nissan Pathfinder.

    I have a Hilux toyota 2010
It has multilayer steel cylinder head gaskets. Can you continue working without problems?

    • BD Auto Pro on October 9, 2019 at 9:22 am

      Virginia,

Thanks for your question about your 2010 Toyota Hilux. Multilayer steel head gaskets are the most robust head gaskets you can get for your vehicle so if that is what your truck has installed then it is very unlikely to get a blown head gasket. In our experience, if you’ve got a head gasket leak with an MLS head gasket, the problem is more often a warped or cracked head than a problem with the head gasket.

      Thanks again for your question!

I have 2002 Chevy Monte carlo with a bad starter and a small cracked engine block from what I was told the
crack is forcing my starter to go bad and not start, Im getting my starter rebuilt will I then be able to use the sealer or
will I need to do something else to get it to start, because some times It start and some times it dont but my battery only work
when I have jumper cables attached other than that it seems like the battery needs to be charged and starter needs to be rebuilt and then maybe the sealer ?

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 15, 2019 at 9:25 am

      Curtis-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Monte Carlo. Based on your description, we would recommend repairing the starter issue first, before using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. In order to get the benefit of using the product, the vehicle would need to be able to start and idle for a full 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out.

Used the Blue Devil YELLOW LABEL in my Dodge Truck. However I DID NOT remove the thermostat and now the heater does not work. Do you think the thermostat has plugged up and hot water is not getting to the heater core? The engine is not overheating but I have not run it a lot. What would you recommend at this point?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 13, 2020 at 9:14 am

      Dennis-

The reason for the direction of removing the thermostat isn’t because of the possibility of it clogging. It is to ensure the system is free-flowing. You can check the thermostat to see if it’s clogged and also check to see if it’s functioning properly by placing it in boiling water and seeing if it opens up at the proper temperature. What are the symptoms your Dodge was having? So, as for the 50 minute idol, I need to use this on a Prius. As you may know, the Prius only idols for a few minute at a time and I don’t think there is a way to keep it at a steady idol for 50 minutes. Suggestions?

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 13, 2020 at 1:19 pm

      Brian-

There is actually a procedure to put the vehicle in what’s called “Maintenance Mode.” This will allow your Prius to idle consistently without shutting off, until you turn off the ignition. You may want to look up the instructions for this procedure online.

      Hope this helps!

I have a slight leak on my 2001 SLK320 which leaks coolant to the motor only after driving for an hour. Do I idle it for an hour with the product in it get it to work? It takes a long time for this car to get to the operating temp of around 189F. And how many bottles should I use for this engine?

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 10, 2020 at 10:21 am

      Richard-

Thank you for asking about your Mercedes Benz SLK320. Based on your description, we would recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer. As per the directions, once the product is added, you will idle the vehicle for 50 minutes. The product reacts at a temperature around 150 degrees. You would want to change your oil before and after the procedure. You would need 16 oz. of the product for your 6 cylinder engine. Is it bad to leave the sealant in for longer then 50 minutes and possibly drive it around for a couple days, short trips?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 12, 2020 at 9:46 am

      Malea-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer only reacts to heat once (one heat cycle). After the 50 minute idle and you shut the vehicle off, the product will not continue to react or continue to seal. It is safe to leave in the system, however, you are not getting any additional benefit by doing so. Once complete, you would be fine to drain the system and refill with your regular 50/50 mix.

So I am getting ready to use your Yellow Label on my 2007 6.0 powestroke. The issue is I only have a surge tank so do I add it with the engine off through the radiator, or running through the surge?

    • BlueDevil Pro on June 30, 2020 at 8:58 am

      David-

If your vehicle only has a reservoir/overflow rather than a radiator cap, instead of pouring BlueDevil through the reservoir/overflow, with the car off and engine cold you should disconnect the top radiator hose and add the product there; do not pour it into the reservoir. It may be added into the hose or the opening on the radiator. Once BlueDevil has been added, reconnect the hose and start the idle from that point.

I just used the blue devil hg repair (winter time), follow the instructions to a T. Was wondering during the 50mins wait if I should have waited even longer for fans to kick in indicating the thermostat opening? If so will subsequent drives help circulate the product or will i need to do it again?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 18, 2022 at 8:13 am

      Will-

The BlueDevil Head Gasket Repair only goes through one heat cycle, so it does not continue to react or continue to seal down the road. The product reacts around 150 degrees Fahrenheit, which it shouldn’t have had any issue getting up to temperature during the 50-minute run. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

      • Will on January 18, 2022 at 11:53 am

I guess my question/concern is wether or not the product was able to fully circulate during the 50mins idle in winter time. My fear is that because I did not see the fans kick in (indicating thermostat fully open) within the timeframe that the product did not reach the block. Thoughts?

        • BlueDevil Pro on January 18, 2022 at 12:01 pm

          Will-

Ambient temperature really wouldn’t have any influence on the procedure. As long as the engine wasn’t overheating during the 50-minute run, it would indicate that you still had circulation, and the product still should have been able to seal.

          Thank you!

I had forgotten to turn my engine on before adding, and I had too much coolant in the radiator so that I could only fill it about half-way. I did, however, immediately turn my engine on and put it on max heat. Three questions:

    1. Is it okay that the engine was not running when I initially added the product, and
    2. Is barely half a bottle enough? (The bottle is 16 ounces; I used maybe 7-8 ounces) I drive a four-cylinder.
    3. Will the lesser amount reduce/modify the amount of time I have to leave the engine running idle?
    4. What do you recommend I do next?

    Thank you!

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 22, 2022 at 8:31 am

      Amir-

Yes, it is fine that the engine was not running when you added the product, as long as it was added directly into the radiator. Depending on the vehicle’s cooling system capacity, it’s possible the amount of product used was sufficient. I used a 16oz bottle of the pour n go head gasket sealer because my car tends to overheat on warm days after a long drive. I did follow the directions on the bottle. Now my question is can I leave it in the system or do I have to drain it and add coolant??

    • BlueDevil Pro on March 14, 2022 at 9:34 am

      Paul-

Did you use the product with coolant or just plain water? The BlueDevil Pour-N-Go Head Gasket Sealer only goes through one heat cycle, so it does not continue to react or continue to seal after the 50-minute run. You would be fine to drain the system completely and refill with your regular 50/50 mix.

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 8, 2022 at 2:12 pm

      Mickenzie-

Hissing like excess air in the system? It sounds as though you may need to bleed/burp the cooling system after the cool down period to remove any excess air that may be present. Once complete, top the system back off with your regular 50/50 mix and take it for a test drive.

If it looks like the engine is going to overheat, you would want to shut the vehicle off. It is very important that the vehicle is able to maintain idle for the full 50 minutes, without overheating or stalling out. The product only goes through one heat cycle. If you have to shut it down early for whatever reason, the product would not continue to react or continue to seal. You would want to ensure the system is topped off prior to starting the 50-minute run. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

Heklo, i have a 2000 BMW 323ci an i dint have a radiator cap only a resivor. Ny radiator hose goes into the resivor at the same time it goes into the radiator. (2 holes 2 connections next to eachother) Do i pour BD down hose towards radiatior an try my best to have it go to radiator hole or can i pour it the opposite way towards engine block either way BD going to same place.Does it matter? 2nd qiestion there is allit if pressure in my coolant system an it keeps popping the oil cooler off every time. Wut do o do in that scenario, because i cant afford to keep buying BD X amount if times. Do i jus strap it down an hope for the best, or figure out how to stop the pressure in the system, or buy a new car lol. Ive went threw 2 bottles already an the pressure keep being to much? Remember e46 bmws have plastic parts an stupid little clips that hold coolant system together

        Initial report:
        Vehicle- 2009 Pontiac G6 3.5
        Mileage- 287680
Issue- Engine consumes coolant, suspected warped cylinder head.

The engine coolant temperature stabilized somewhere around 190F after about 30 minutes of operating at idle with the thermostat removed, a pint of Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealer in a full 3 gallon cooling system, and the radiator cap on. That was the same temperature that was reached during operation after the cooling system issue started some time ago.
As I sat in the car observing what was going on, I was concerned that I may not have added enough BD.
Then, somewhere around the 50 minute mark, I noticed that the coolant temperature had dropped about 25 degrees. The coolant temperature was below the temperature that it would reach with the thermostat installed.
That’s what I was waiting to see!
I turned off the engine a few minutes later.
Because of time constraints I will not be able to reinstall the thermostat before driving the car, but it will get to cool for about 9 hours overnight before I start it up again.
As I see it, driving the car without a thermostat should have no negative impact on operation of the BD product.
        What say ye, Blue Devil?

        • BlueDevil Pro on January 22, 2024 at 9:07 am

          Patootie-

You are correct. It is fine if you can’t put the thermostat back in after the initial cool down. You should still be able to test drive the vehicle and see the results you got with the product without the thermostat installed. Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal. Thank you. I’ll let you know how it goes, but it’s looking great so far.
Coolant temperature was near 150 on the freeway. (Outside Air Temp 55F)

          • Patootie on January 23, 2024 at 11:07 pm

The engine temperature has remained at or below 190F since I flushed the cooling system and added the Blue Devil two days ago, but I have to add about a pint of water every 100 miles.
The next time I have to top off the system, I’ll probably throw in the rest of the BD.
A pressure test of the cooling system revealed no external leaks at 15 psi before I started this experiment.

          • BlueDevil Pro on January 24, 2024 at 8:37 am

            Patootie-

If you’ve noticed improvement but still have somewhat of a leak, a second application would be recommended. However, you would follow the same directions you did the first time, making sure the engine is cold before adding it and allowing it to idle for a full 50 minutes, before shutting it off and allowing the engine to completely cool.
