Best Oil Stop Leak

#driveyourlife

Any moving equipment needs some way to be lubricated and oil is often the best choice.  Lubrication is so important in machinery because it is often supporting extremely heavy loads while moving or rotating a very high speeds.  In order to accomplish this, lubricants need to be used in order to lower friction to keep temperatures and wear down.  Without any lubrication, most pieces of equipment would not be able to move for very long before overheating or grinding to a halt.

The engine in your vehicle is no different.  Without the proper lubrication, the bearings and piston will quickly overheat causing certain components to melt, deform, and ultimately stop moving without the hope of ever starting again.  The oil in the engine of your car is the key to keeping things cool and slippery so that the surfaces that are in contact with each other don’t create too much heat, don’t wear each other out, and in some cases don’t even touch.  The oil in your engine is stored in the oil pan and pumped to where it needs to go by your oil pump.  After it has been pumped through your engine lubricating the cams, valves, bearings and anything else, it drains back to the oil pan where it collects so the oil pump can send it back through the engine.

The difficult part of this process is keeping the oil where it needs to be, and that’s why oil leak sealant can be so important.  Anywhere a shaft exits your engine, such as your crankshaft or camshaft, is a possible leak point.  Also, any gasket in your engine where two components are joined together like the valve cover gasket or oil pan gasket is a possible leak point.  Lastly any hose or attachment that carries oil has the possibility of leaking oil out during operation of your engine.

What is the cause of oil leaks?

dipstickLeaks are bad for a few reasons.  First, they make a mess.  An oil leak can spread all over external components on your engine such as the hot exhaust where it can burn, or on electronic components that it will damage.  Second, big enough oil leaks can change the pressures and the way oil flows in your engine which may lead to poor lubrication and other problems.  Lastly, an oil leak will cause the level in your oil pan to slowly lower until your oil pump has no more oil to pump.  This also can lead to poor lubrication and all the problems we listed above.

Many of the places oil will leak from in your engine are difficult to get to.  That means replacement of the seals and gaskets can be a time consuming and expensive process leaving you stranded without a car and with a hefty repair bill.  That is why the first oil stop leak products were invented.  Imagine a simple formula you can pour into your engine that will stop your leaks!  A product like that could save time and money and would be worth every penny!

The first engine oil stop leaks worked mainly by clogging up the hole where the oil was leaking from.  Some of the first patented oil stop leaks were no more than castor oil and ground nut shells.  The ground shells would mix with the oil and flow to the leak point where they would literally clog the hole to stop the leak.  Stop leaks like this caused problems because the ground nut shells, or later sawdust, or aluminum shavings would clog other things, or create more wear in the motor.  These types of stop leaks work in theory but, in the long run, do more harm than good.  Some later oil leak repair products would use chemicals like petroleum distillates that did not have particulates to clog the leak but would instead swell the seal or gasket causing it to seal properly and stop the leak.  The problem with these chemicals is that they do swell the gasket for a short time, but they also will cause all the seal or gasket to deteriorate quickly so you will soon have a worse leak than you started with.

What kind of oil stop leak should I use?

The best kind of oil stop leak is one that does not have particulates to clog your engine or petroleum distillates to deteriorate the existing seals.  BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is the best oil stop leak on the market because it is specifically designed to absorb into all of the seals in your engine expanding and revitalizing them back to their original size, shape and flexibility without later destroying them.

Will it fix the blue smoke coming out of exhaust because of bad rings

        Austin-

If the blue smoke coming from the exhaust was attributed to bad o-rings, yes, BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak would be able to treat that kind of a leak. Blue smoke coming from the exhaust pipe can also be related to a head gasket leak, which unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product for that kind of a leak.

        Hope this helps!

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not “fill in a hole” or “plug up a gap.” It works by revitalizing/reconditioning rubber seals/gaskets. Unfortunately, it does not sound as though it would work for your application.

“Will your product work stopping a ring seal leak?”

Are you sure this will slow or stop ring leakage ? My golf cart Yamaha engine is getting a lot of blow by and I am not too sure that a ring job can help very much since the engine had a lot of baked on grease and has probably been hot. That is why I am considering your product , since a golf cart is run only intermittently at the best it would take a long time to get 100+ miles on it, so can I really expect favorable results from your product in my situation ? Thanks Richard Shanks

        • BlueDevil Pro on October 13, 2016 at 11:55 am

Yes, we recommend adding 1 bottle of BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/) to stop the oil loss from your vehicle. Once the product is added you can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving. It does not have to be a continuous drive. You are fine to drive the golf cart like you normally would, it would just be around the 100 mile mark before you would start to notice improvement. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is 100% safe for engines. The product does not harden or thicken at any point and therefore will not restrict flow or harm any component of the engine. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak works by slightly expanding and reconditioning the rubber seals & gaskets in the system. Once the product is added you can expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving.

If you are losing oil that quickly then you probably have a leak that is larger than what BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended to fix. The product would be lost too quickly if the system is losing its entire oil capacity within 100 miles.

Once Blue Devil oil stop leak is added into your oil lubricating system and the engine has ran for 1 – 2 hours or for 100 – 200 miles, is it required to change the oil if the vehicle isn’t due a scheduled oil change?

BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak can stay in the system for the life of the oil. It is not necessary to change the oil, once the product has been able to seal, until your next scheduled oil change. The product does not harden or thicken in any way, so it will not have any adverse affects on the engine.

I just bought an 05 caravan and noticed a smell of burnt oil after driving and here and there I smell it while driving but no leak detected on the driveway – after discovering the prior owners mechanic check in the owners manual, they noted it had a small oil pan leak. If I were to use your product – would I need to use less than a bottle as it’s only a tiny leak? and I don’t change the oil myself – would jiffy lube or other add this product for me during a change?

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 19, 2016 at 12:22 pm

      Jackson-

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Caravan. One 8 oz. bottle would treat 4-6 quarts of oil. It is not necessary to change your oil prior to using the product. The product can stay in the oil system for the life of the oil, so it does not have to be changed out immediately after results are achieved. You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

If used in a motorcycle with a wet clutch, where the engine oil is also used to lubricate the clutch, will BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak have any adverse effects on the friction of the clutch plates?
I use full synthetic oil for a race bike and have to avoid oil with any “energy additives”, like molybdenum, that reduce friction because the clutch could start to slip. Does your product contain any additives that would reduce friction?

    • BlueDevil Pro on September 9, 2016 at 9:39 am

Yes, you may safely use BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak in motorcycles that use a wet clutch.  You should add 1 ounce of BlueDevil per every 1 quart of capacity.  Expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving. Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal. There would not be a need to add the product after every oil change, unless you were noticing a leak. Recently purchased a 99 Impreza outback sport with a difficult to diagnose oil leak. It appears to be coming from either the oil pan or possibly the rear main seal or plastic oil separator “plate” at the rear of the engine. Would the product be able to deal with these issues (i would imagine the oil separator is questionable as I believe it is a denser plastic) and do you offer some form of protection to customers should the product cause an issue of some kind to the motor? thank you.

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 1, 2016 at 9:48 am

Thank you for asking about your Subaru Impreza. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is a universal application and would treat leaking oil pan gaskets, valve cover seal, rear main seal, etc. where as the Rear Main Sealer is specifically formulated for the rear main seal. The product does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not have any adverse affects on the engine or system itself. I have also had a sign of the starts of a head gasket leak with traces of oil in the coolant. Is there danger in using both products?

I have a 2005 Ford escape limited edition that has an small engine oil leak.
I do not know if the seals/gaskets in the system are rubber.
Would BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak work for my car?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 10, 2017 at 11:14 am

      Matt-

Thank you for asking about your Ford Escape. Based on your description, we recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. The seals/gaskets in the vehicle should be rubber. You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

      Thank you!

I don’t think the oil pan gasket on my 2000 VW Passat is rubber. Will this product work or not?

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 16, 2017 at 9:31 am

      Rafe-

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is only intended for rubber seals/gaskets. If the gasket is made of some other material such as cork, paper or rope, unfortunately, the product would not have any affect.

I have a 1970 V olvo 145, B20B engine. About 150,000 miles on the engine. I believe the front crankshaft oil seal, which is a felt seal, is leaking. May also be the pan gasket. Will BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak work on a felt seal? I have a new seal, but no time at present to replace, but I am capable of replacing it myself. Had this car for thirty years!!

    Toby Franklen

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 15, 2017 at 8:46 am

      Toby-

Thank you for asking about your Volvo 145. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/) is only intended for the rubber seals/gaskets in the system. Unfortunately, the product would not have any affect on a felt seal. A hard part repair may be your best option.

Will BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak clog the tiny holes in the oil rod that bathe the cam shaft and rocker arms with oil on a ’73 Honda CB motorcycle?

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 22, 2017 at 10:15 am

      Mike-

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak works by revitalizing and reconditioning the rubbers in the system. It expands, or slightly swells the rubbers back to their original state. It does not harden or thicken in any way, so it would not plug or clog any holes or passages. A hard part repair may be your best option.

      Thank you!

Based on your description, we would recommend using the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/). You would add the product where you add your engine oil. You should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

        • BlueDevil Pro on March 23, 2017 at 9:02 am

          Juanita-

Yes, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak would stop the smoke you are seeing if the smoke was attributed to the oil loss you are experiencing. Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal, so you would not have to add oil as frequently as you were in the past.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 4, 2017 at 9:12 am

      Aldred-

Thank you for asking about your Dodge Magnum. Getting water into the engine oil is a tell-tale sign of a blown head gasket. We recommend using the BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer for your leak. You will want to change the oil before and after the BlueDevil process.

Thank you for asking about your Mitsubishi. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak (http://store.gobdp.com/oil-stop-leak-49499/) is only intended for the rubber seals/gaskets in the system. If the leak is indeed coming from one of those rubbers, then you would be a great candidate for the product. Typically, you should expect to see results after about 100-200 miles of driving.

will blue devil oil stop leak work on oil pump seal

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 13, 2017 at 9:59 am

      Hal-

Unfortunately, the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak would not be intended for an oil pump seal leak. The reason it will not work for the seal on the pump is due to the amount of pressure being put on that specific location. Replacing the oil pump may be your best option.

      Thank you!

I’m impressed. I have an 07 HD Street Glide that has developed a bad seal where the linkage goes into the tranny. It’s a $5 seal but it’s a 5 hour job to replace.
After a few trie with other products I decided to give Blue Devil Pour and Go a try and within a couple of days the leak has stopped. That’s from a good tablespoon of oil on the ground when parked after a ride to nothing now.
I’m definitely impressed, just want to see how long it’s lasts is my only concerns now. I WILL update ya. But it worked great with our synthetic oil in the tranny.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 20, 2017 at 8:41 am

      Andrew-

That is excellent to hear! Once the product seals, it would be a permanent seal, so you should be good to go at this point. Please keep us updated. We appreciate your feedback!

    Hi there,

My car recently got overheated (upper radiator hose broken in the middle of the road). I don’t see any oil leak. Is it a good idea to use a bottle of blue devil stop oil leak just for in case? Or would it clog the engine?

    • BlueDevil Pro on May 8, 2017 at 10:03 am

      Jay-

The vehicle overheating would have to do with low coolant or pressure building up in the cooling system, not oil loss. Are you noticing a loss of water/coolant? The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is only intended for rubber seals/gaskets and for leaks that are seeping or lightly dripping from the system. If the front main crank seal on your Scout II is a rubber seal, and you are not losing oil too quickly, you would be a great candidate for the product. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not have any adverse affects on the engine. Overall, the product carries a very high success rate and comes with a money-back guarantee.

Typically with the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak, you would start to notice improvement after approximately 100-200 miles of driving. It does not have to be a continuous drive. You are fine to go in 5-10 mile intervals, here and there. However, if you are losing oil at a faster rate than that of a seep or a light drip, it may be a good idea to drive for an hour or so to get the product working a little quicker.

    • BlueDevil Pro on October 29, 2018 at 10:04 am

      Henry-

No, BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak only needs to be added 1 time. Once the leak has sealed it is not necessary to add more BlueDevil; the seal will remain intact.

      Thank you!

this is about an 85 Honda trx250 quad. i have a small slow oil drip in the crank case seal. where the 2 half’s meet. and this quad shares the same oil with the wet clutch. so my question is will this not only work to stop the leak but be safe to use in my quad with the wet clutch ? and if so how much should i use ?. the leak is on the bottom so i should be able to just put it in and let it set with out running it.

not sure what the gasket is made of, but it might be the paper kind, the oil is seeping through it though from what i can tell. my main concern is the wet clutch, and the safety of the gasket of course,

    • BlueDevil Pro on November 29, 2018 at 9:12 am

      Ricky-

Yes, you may safely add the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak in vehicle’s that use a wet clutch. You should add 1 ounce of BlueDevil per every 1 quart of capacity. Expect to start seeing results after about 100 miles of driving. The product is only intended for rubber seals/gaskets, so it would not have any affect on any other type of material.

      Thank you!

So I have 2002 Toyota Sienna with valve cover gasket leak. I saw the reviews of the “Rear Main Seal” product on youtube which were excellent, and I added that to fix the valve cover gasket leak. I didn’t realize that you had another product to stop oil leaks. Will the “Rear Main Seal” product have a chance of working?

    • BlueDevil Pro on December 13, 2018 at 1:43 pm

      Steve-

Thank you for asking about your Toyota Sienna. For a leaking valve cover gasket, the appropriate product to use would be the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is more concentrated and is the universal application that will work for various leaks such as oil pan leaks, rear main leaks, valve cover gasket leaks, etc. Whereas the Rear Main Sealer is specifically formulated for only a leaking rear main seal.

      Thank you!

I have a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 5.3 ltr v8 with a pretty bad rear main seal leak will blue devil help . And do i add a full bottle to an already full oil tank

      • BlueDevil Pro on March 29, 2019 at 10:01 am

        Kitiara-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Silverado. As long as you are not losing oil too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer. You would be fine to add the product on top of your existing oil. You should expect to start seeing results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

        Thank you!

My head gasket on 2005 subaru is leaking oil, will Oil Stop Leak work? If not, what do you recommend.

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 2, 2019 at 8:48 am

      Derrick-

Thank you for asking about your Subaru. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop oil leaks from the head gasket. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak would only be intended to treat rubber seals/gaskets. A hard part repair may be your best option.

      Thank you!

I have a chevy cruze 2012. I searched out your oil stop leak product in Vancouver, Canada but i did not find it. But I saw good reviews about it so i went to bellingham WA. To get it from autozone. My car engine has small oil leaks under the oil filter. I poured it in to the engine oil in bellingham and drove my car to vancouver about 50 miles. I hope it would work i just addee it yesterday 24 Jan 2019. Is there any recommendations. I was wondering if the oil leak is from Head gasket would it repair it as well ?
        Thanks

        • BlueDevil Pro on February 25, 2019 at 9:42 am

          Simran-

Thank you for asking about your Chevy Cruze. The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is only intended for rubber seals/gaskets. Unfortunately, it would not repair a head gasket leaking oil. Typically, you should expect to start seeing results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

Yes, the Oil Stop Leak would be able to seal the timing chain cover leak on your Lexus. As long as you are not losing oil too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the product. You should expect to start seeing results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

Will BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak effectively stop some unknown/random Oil leaks in a 1992 Nissan Sentra without causing further problems?!? This ’92 Sentra is our ‘baby’ and we rely on her for daily driving use…

    • BlueDevil Pro on February 4, 2019 at 9:14 am

      Dau-Dav-

Thank you for asking about your Nissan Sentra. Based on your description, you would be a good candidate for the BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak. The product does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not cause any adverse effects. You should expect to see results after approximately 100-200 miles of driving.

Would blue devil stop leak seal the oil leak at the turbos on a 2002 audi a6 2.7t ? Also uses full synthetic oil? Its hasn’t rolled over 100,000 miles yet. I’m not positive if the oil leak is turbo or cam sensor cover or back side of valve cover. I am very interested if blue devil stop leak would help this leak if it is any of the 3 areas I mentioned.

    • BlueDevil Pro on April 22, 2019 at 11:01 am

      Rod-

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak treats leaks coming from rubber seals/gaskets. If the leak is coming from one of those rubbers, then it would be able to seal, however, the product does not harden or thicken in any way, so it would not cause any adverse affects regardless. I see oil bubbling upward and running on a surface area between and above my transmission and my engine. I suspect that its leaking from the head gasket. Can this product help to stop that leak. The oil only leaks when I drive.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 18, 2019 at 8:49 am

      Orlando-

The BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is only intended to treat rubber seals/gaskets. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop oil leaks from head gasket. Based on your description, it’s possible the leak is coming from a different component. Was it diagnosed as leaking from the head gasket or was that just a guess? Typically, the area where you’ve described the leak coming from would be the rear main seal. The Oil Stop Leak does not harden or thicken in anyway, so it would not cause any adverse affects. It would be worth it to give the product a try in this instance. Feel free to contact our technical support line at 888-863-0426 with any other questions.

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 5, 2019 at 9:42 am

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 5, 2019 at 9:21 am

Can you get the desired result from just letting your vehicle idle or does it need to be driven for the required time?

    Thanks!

    • BlueDevil Pro on August 6, 2019 at 9:21 am

      Ty-

It would actually need to be driven, versus just letting it sit there and idle. You should expect to see results after 100-200 miles of driving. It does not have to be a continuous drive. You are fine to go in 5,10 mile intervals, or drive it around like you normally would.

      Brandon-

Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a product intended to stop oil from getting into the water. The BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer is only intended for water/coolant leaks, so it would work for water getting into the engine oil but, not the other way around. A hard part repair may be your best option.

    • BlueDevil Pro on July 15, 2020 at 9:32 am

      Edward-

Thank you for asking about your Mercedes Benz. Unfortunately, BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak would not be able to treat a leaking oil pump. Because of the high pressures that are pumping the oil out, the product wouldn’t be able to stay in the pump long enough in order to seal it. Replacing the pump would be your best option.

    • BlueDevil Pro on January 15, 2021 at 11:23 am

Thank you for asking about your Honda Accord. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak is intended for leaks that are seeping or lightly dripping. As long as you are not losing oil too quickly, you would be a good candidate for the product. If you seem to be losing oil at a quicker pace, unfortunately, you would lose the product just as quickly and wouldn’t really be able to keep it in the system long enough in order to get the benefit of using it. Thank you for asking about your Firebird. If you’ve noticed improvement but the leak persists, a second application would be worth while. Typically, it will take around 100-200 miles of driving before you start to notice improvement. Depending on the size of the leak, it could take up to around 300 miles before you see the full benefit of the product.
