How to Quiet Power Steering Noise

#driveyourlife

power steering noisePower steering noise can be embarrassing, frustrating, and can make your car feel like a jalopy when in reality, almost all of your car is working properly.  Power steering noise can often be an indication of something wrong with your car, but there is a possibly that your power steering system is simply noisy due to age or even the design of the system causing the noise you’re hearing.

The power steering noise you have could be due to the pump, the fluid, or a problem somewhere else in the system.

The easiest power steering noises to cure is noise due to old or worn out fluid.  Your power steering fluid is the hydraulic fluid which provides pressure to your steering gear or rack to aid in turning your front wheels during low speed turning.  This fluid is constantly being pumped from the pump down to the rack or gear and back at high pressure any time your engine is running.  This constant pressure and movement causes your power steering fluid to heat up and it’s constantly being pressurized and depressurized.  All this puts a lot of stress on the fluid and can change is physical properties.

Power steering fluid is designed to both apply pressure in the power steering system but also resist foaming or frothing as well as lubricate the pump and components in the steering rack.  After lots of use, and especially in warm weather, the fluid can lose its ability to lubricate and to resist foaming.  Once your power steering fluid has lost these two properties it can often allow your power steering pump to get noisy as any pump will without the proper lubrication.

In this case, the best way to quiet power steering noise in your car is to simply change the fluid.  There are a few different ways you can change the power steering fluid in your car, so the best place to start is by reading our article on How to Change Power Steering Fluid.

Before changing power steering fluid it’s important to check the power steering fluid level to see if your vehicle possibly has a power steering leak.  If you do find a low fluid level, add BlueDevil Power Steering Stop Leak along with your new fluid to stop the leak and make sure you don’t lose all of the new fluid you just installed.

If you’ve got clean power steering fluid that is topped off and still have power steering noise then the problem is either an indication of a failing power steering pump, a high pressure in your power steering system or that simply is the way your power steering system sounds.  Unfortunately, when it comes to these sorts of problems, your only option is to try replacing the broken equipment.  If flushing your power steering system with new fluid didn’t relieve any high-pressure problems you’re having then you most likely will have to replace whatever component that has the clog in it, most likely the steering rack or gear.  Similarly, if your power steering pump is simply going bad, usually due to a bad bearing, the only option is to replace it with a new pump.
