Power Steering Pump Replacement

Power Steering Pump ReplacementPower steering pump replacement may be a necessary maintenance item for you to perform on your vehicle, but it may also be avoidable.  The power steering pump in your vehicle is a relatively robust piece of equipment that usually outlasts many other components on your car so it can be worth checking for other problems before replacing your power steering pump.

The most common sign that your power steering pump is going bad is either a whining sound or a fluid from the pump shaft.  In either case, the best solution may not be a power steering pump replacement.  If you’re hearing a whining noise from your power steering pump, you may consider simply changing your power steering fluid first.  Old or worn out power steering fluid can lack the ability to properly lubricate the pump allowing it to whine and it’s a very simple procedure.  For more information about how to flush your power steering yourself, check out our article on how to flush your power steering system.

The other most common source of power steering pump noise that wouldn’t require a power steering pump replacement is a system leak.  Leaks most often come from the seals in your power steering pump or power steering rack.  If you discover a leak in one of these locations, add BlueDevil Power Steering Stop Leak along with your top off fluid to seal the leak without replacing any equipment!  For more information about BlueDevil Power Steering Stop Leak, click on the banner at the bottom of this article!

It is possible that your power steering pump simply needs to be replaced.  Most often, this happens due to worn out bearings on the pump shaft.  If you remove the belt from your power steering pump and spin the pulley you can often feel worn out bearings by a wobble in the pulley or lumpy resistance as the pulley spins.  If this is the case, you should consider replacing the power steering pump Yourself!

To replace your power steering pump, start by removing the drive belt.  This can be done by releasing the tension on the belt either by releasing the automatic tensioner or by backing off the tensioning bolt on the power steering pump.  Next, you need to drain the fluid from the system as you always want to add new fluid with a new pump.  You can do that with a vacuum fluid pump or by removing a line that is low in the system.  Once the fluid is removed, disconnect the high and low pressure lines from the pump being careful not to damage the lines.  With the lines off, you’re free to remove the power steering pump from your engine which is usually only held on by 2-3 bolts.  With the old pump out, you can install your new pump by simply reversing this procedure.

When filling your power steering system with new fluid, be sure to properly remove air from the system before starting your engine to avoid damaging the new power steering pump.  You can do this by filling the fluid reservoir, raising the front tires of your car off the ground safely and turning the wheel back and forth from lock to lock while refilling the fluid reservoir until you don’t see bubbles in the fluid anymore.  Once you’ve stopped seeing bubbles, you can start your engine and continue turning your wheels lock to lock while filling the reservoir removing any other trapped air.  Simply fill the reservoir to the “full” line and you should be ready to drive!
